This CD is literally drawn from the soundtrack of Tony Palmer's recently rediscovered film of Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort playing an open-air gig at the Maidstone Fiesta in 1970 -- the narrator's voice occasionally pops into the beginning and end of the tracks, and while the sound quality is good, the firm compression and lack of stereo spread certainly suggest the tone of a shot-on-16mm documentary from the early '70s. Also, at just over half an hour divided between two bands, this doesn't offer much of a picture of either act, through folk-rock legends Fairport Convention are certainly in spirited form on these recordings. This performance features the same edition of the band (Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, Simon Nichol, Dave Pegg, and Dave Mattacks) that recorded 1970's classic Full House, and the speedy, swaggering jigs and reels are every bit as impressive as those found on the excellent live album House Full (recorded the same year, but not released until 1988). Matthews Southern Comfort's British variation on American country-rock doesn't get as much time on this disc, although Iain Matthews' rich, supple vocals are wonderful, as is the band (especially guitarists Mark Griffiths and Carl Barnwell and Gordon Huntley on pedal steel); perhaps their music is less immediately exciting, but if given a few spins to sink in, this reaffirms the consensus that Matthews Southern Comfort deserved more much attention than they received in their day. Short and sweet, Live in Maidstone 1970 documents two of the finest bands of the U.K. folk-rock scene near the top of their game in front of a clearly appreciative audience, and what's here is splendid -- hopefully some archivist will someday unearth tapes of the full sets both acts played that afternoon.

The film ‘The Life and Works of Richard Wagner’, directed by Carl Fröhlich, was first released on 20th November 1913. It was the first ever ‘bio-pic’, and as such about who else but Wagner? What is extraordinary, however, is that it predates D.W.Griffiths and ‘Birth of a Nation’, usually described as the first ‘long’ silent, at a time when the great majority of silents ran for 10 minutes at most. Fröhlich’s film runs for over 80 minutes! The DVD includes commentary from acclaimed director Tony Palmer.
Starring Giuseppe Becce as the composer (he later became a distinguished composer himself for almost 100 talkies), and made when Wagner’s widow Cosima was still omnipotent in Germany, it raises the question for instance of who exactly was Wagner’s father? Was it Ludwig Geyer, the Jew? Fröhlich went on to have a chequered career. A member of the Nazi party from 1933, he was eventually appointed President of the Reichsfilmkammer, the Nazi trade organisation which controlled access to all film activities. At the end of the war he was arrested and, although de-Nazified in 1948, his studio having been badly damaged during the war never resumed production. His films were then confiscated by the Federal Republic! This film has been fully restored from the original print and keeping the authentic tints to ensure it is as close to what Carl Fröhlich would have wanted.

Leonard Norman Cohen Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist.

First time on DVD for this classic concert film. Originally released in 1972 and directed by celebrated British filmmaker Tony Palmer, Bird On A Wire follows Cohen on his 1972 European tour and contains 17 classic performances, four poems and tour footage. After several edits it was re-released in 1974. Like many films from the era, it was thought that the original print had been lost, but in 2009 more than 290 rolls of film in rusted cans were discovered containing much of the original rushes and soundtrack of the 1972 film. Tony Palmer was able to restore much of this footage and it is now available on DVD for the first time. Also includes a limited edition reproduction of the iconic 1972 film poster and is in deluxe digipak packaging.

The first ever full-length film biography of the great composer, produced by the multi-award winning director, Tony Palmer.
The Last Ever Interview with Ursula Vaughan Williams

Tony Palmer's film is now complete. Undoubtedly controversial it will also be very important in raising awareness of RVW. Two and a half hours long, it looks at Vaughan Williams' life as a disturbed and frustrated one. Powerful with some harrowing imagery, the film firmly dispels the myth that VW was a cuddly folk song collector and recycler who was affectionately known as "Uncle Ralph". As well as exploring his musical legacy, Palmer also focuses on the human side of VW. His frustration at living in a cosy market town, looking after an invalid wife (which he did devotedly) and the fury as well as the kindness and humanity which were all features of his remarkable character and which in their turn affected his music. The music passages are superbly played and filmed.

This is my description text 1. It can support html.By 1970 Fairport Convention had been together as a band for some three years. During this period, the band had recorded and released five studio albums, with one of the albums, Liege and Lief, being hailed as genre defining. At the time of the filming of this performance, the band had just recorded their most recent album Full House, with the line-up featuring founder members Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol, alongside Dave Pegg, Dave Swarbrick and drummer Dave Mattacks. This line-up was - and still is - considered one of the key line-ups of Fairport Convention, although the band only managed one studio and (released much later) one live album.

Apart from the footage contained on this DVD, the Full House line-up was unfortunately never filmed commercially until reunions at the band's regular Cropredy Festival years later. The film, directed by renowned British film director Tony Palmer, captures the band at the Maidstone Fiesta during the summer of 1970 as they run through their set of the time. This included various jigs and reels, and the songs Sir Patrick Spens and Now Be Thankful. Now Be Thankful, incidentally, although originally recorded for the band's album Full House, was even released at the time as a single. The film also features two songs from Matthews Southern Comfort, the band led by former Fairport Convention member, Ian Matthews. As well as having the Fairport connection, Matthews Southern Comfort would also go on to have a massive hit single with a cover of the Joni Mitchell song Woodstock in late 1970.

The film has only recently been rediscovered and the restoration overseen by Tony Palmer. The DVD also includes bonus footage of an exclusive interview filmed in spring 2007 with director Tony Palmer where he explains how he first met Fairport Convention and his thoughts on the band and the film over thirty five years later.

Tracks: Various Jigs and Reels - Fairport Convention, Sir Patrick Spens - Fairport Convention, Now Be Thankful - Fairport Convention, My Front Pages - Matthews Southern Comfort, Southern Comfort - Matthews Southe

New DVD from director Tony Palmer telling the story of the Wagner family.

This brand new DVD from the acclaimed director Tony Palmer tells the controversial story of the Wagner family. It was originally broadcast in September 2009 on ITV1 as one of the final programmes of The South Bank Show and is now being made available in an extended version.
This is a film about a family, a family which has ruled the theatre in Bayreuth in southern Germany for the last 140 years, some say still the greatest theatre in the world. There's no doubt that Richard Wagner who built it was the most influential composer in the whole of the 19th Century. But his family has survived a mixture of lies, deception, fraud and dangerous political alliances. The story of this family is a soap opera that makes Coronation Street look like Noddy-in-Toyland. It’s a family - in many ways the Royal family of Germany - at war with itself.
