This is a disc of Lenten and Holy Week hymns compiled from earlier releases by
the Male Choir of the "Valaam" Institute (e. g., the series "Russian Calvary"
and "Orthodox Shrines of the Russian North"). Though the perfomances are not
new, here they appear in a different thematic and liturgical context, which is
more focused than on the earlier releases. The "Valaam" Institute Male Choir
sings resonantly and tunefully, equally at home performing early unison chant
or choral polyphony of later centuries. The presentation of this release is
minimal: the titles of the selections have been corrected and are rendered
accurately in English, but there are no notes about the music or text
