Review:

This new recording features the celebrated Requiem of 1605, Victoria's final composition, a work of beguiling beauty and sumptuous simplicity. It can be seen as the summation of both his art and the Spanish Renaissance tradition. The beautiful plainsong on which it is structured can be heard arching through the texture, forming a delicate and sinuous line throughout. Subtly accompanied by a chamber organ and bajón, it is recorded here with the same forces as may well have performed it originally in the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales.

The Requiem is preceded by Marian Antiphons interspersed with three motets setting texts from the Song of Songs. SACD-CD hybrid/surround sound
"This CD, which is rounded off with a half-dozen Marian motets by the same composer all of which are masterpieces, represents one of the highlights of The Sixteen’s career to date. The interpretation is quite simply magisterial, in keeping with the music being performed; the impact is unforgettable."
Goldberg Magazine February 06
"Victoria's late masterpiece, the 1605 Officium Defunctorum (Requiem), has been in The Sixteen's concert repertoire for many years, Christophers tells us in his engaging introductory essay, but only now do they feel ready to record it. It certainly has been worth the wait, for this is a simply magnificent performance." International Record Review
"The overwhelming impression is of purity, richness and golden warmth in the sound, enriched by a discreet chamber organ and a bajon, an early form of bassoon. Superb."
Sydney Morning Herald, March 06
"Excellent blend, shape and ensemble . . . , as is a sense of real joy in performing the repertory, that is sometimes lacking in recordings of sacred choral Music."
Early Music Magazine April/May 06
"With such fine singers, Christophers is able to mould some really expressive and vital performances."
Choir & Organ Dec 05 *****
"Harry Christophers imbues this account with maturity and assurance as well as a deep understanding of the music’s architecture."
BBC Music Magazine Sep 05 ***** performance ****sound
"An added attraction is the accompanying selection of Marian motets, to which The Sixteen respond very sensitively." Gramophone Dec 05
