The History of the Clarinet - in words and music

The History of the Clarinet - in words and music
ID: CC0031
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Music for Clarinet

A 2 CD set with a 60 page illustrated booklet written by the eminent clarinettist and scholar Colin Lawson.
"The History of the Clarinet" is an extended booklet and two CDs of music, tracing the development of the clarinet from the Baroque period to its current prominent position in all forms of music.
Over three centuries, the clarinet has become one of the most popular of instruments - with important roles in chamber and orchestral music, in jazz and as a solo instrument. This clear and authoritative text, written by leading clarinettist Colin Lawson, shows how the instrument attracted the attention of virtuosos and composers, including Anton Stadler, who inspired Mozart, to Richard Mühlfeld, who inspired Brahms.
Lawson also explains how the B flat and A clarinets became dominant, while the bass clarinet, the C and E flat clarinets also adopted key roles. He traces the mechanics of the clarinet from two- and five-keyed designs to the various 13-keyed and Boehm systems.
His text is illustrated by the two CDs. The first focuses on the clarinet itself, featuring all forms of the instrument. The second CD presents virtuosos from the early days of recording with their different sounds and playing styles.
All this makes "The History of the Clarinet" a fascinating document - a must for all clarinet players and enthusiasts.

Handel - Alexander's Feast - Ludus Baroque

Handel - Alexander's Feast - Ludus Baroque
ID: DCD34094

Type: CD
Collection:
Baroque

Handel's musical illustration of Dryden's Alexander's Feast, first performed in 1736, was a critical and popular success. A day after the première, the London Daily Post reported 'Never was upon the like Occasion so numerous and splendid an Audience at any Theatre in London, there being at least 1300 Persons present'.

Twice a year some of the UK's finest baroque players and young vocal soloists come together in Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk to give sell-out concerts of the great works of Bach and Handel. The chorus, handpicked by Will Dawes, comprises a sensational selection of singers from Britain’s finest early music consorts, including the Monteverdi Choir, the Sixteen, Polyphony and the Gabrieli and King’s Consorts.

Ludus Baroque's appearances are unmissable events in Edinburgh's calendar. Now for the first time listeners from further afield can experience the vibrancy of their Festival-fuelled performances in this their debut recording. Alexander's Feast is the perfect showpiece for the vitality and abandon of Ludus Baroque and their rising-star soloists.

The Chamber Sonatas by Agostino Steffani were published in the early 1700's by the Dutch editor, Estienne Roger.
Steffani's Sonatas are usually classified as "instrumental music". Really there are elements in these pieces that make them blatantly different from that which is currently called "instrumental." The six suites are in fact taken from overtures, from the refrains, and from the dances of
Steffani's six musical dramas. Each one of the six sonatas bears an opening quote that refers to the six titles author's theatrical operas:
Ouverture de l'Opera d'Orlando (1691), Ouverture de l'Opera Henricus Leo (1689), Ouverture de l'Opera d'Alexander (1690), Ouverture de l'Opera Gli Rivali Concordi (1692), Ouverture de l'Opera d'Alcibiades (1693) and Ouverture de l'Opera Gli Triomphi del Fato (1695). Most of the parts of the Sonatas have been found to be contained in each of the works cited, but some are not, probably because they refer to the music of the dances in Steffani's six musical dramas, ballets that often were not included in the scores of the operas. Agostino Steffani (1654 - 1728) was the composer who, more than anyone else, was responsible for the diffusion of the musical taste for musical drama and
Venetian chamber music throughout Europe and, in particular, in the German speaking countries. He had a considerable influence on Georg Friedrich Händel, who owed him quite a bit both in terms of the music he wrote as well as in terms of his career.
