S.V. Rachmaninov - Piano Works for Four and Six Hands

S.V. Rachmaninov - Piano Works for Four and Six Hands
ID: CNT2073
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Chamber Music
Subcollection: Piano

This CD presents a few of Sergej Rachmaninov's rarer piano compositions for four and six hands, some which have never previously been recorded. Considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, Rachmaninov continued in and advanced Russia's long-standing tradition in piano music for four hands and composed numerous works in this genre. The CD was recorded at the VIII edition of the chamber music festival, "Armonie della Sera", which is held in some of the Marche's most panoramic locations. The works are performed by the Sollini-Barbatano duo, formed by Marco Sollini, pianist with a long, rich international career and Salvatore Barbatano, a young artist distinguished for his remarkable talent and profound musical sensitivity, and the great French pianist, François-Joël Thiollier.

Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers
Part 3 Disc 1: Before 1917

This eighth disc of the Anthology of Russian Piano Music is dedicated to the roots of Russian piano school and encompasses the first hundred years of its development in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The acknowledged Russian classical composers Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Taneyev and Lyadov are here (represented with rarely performed works though), along with little known or now completely forgotten composers such as Rubinstein, Rebikov and Arensky.

A unique journey across the pages of lyrical and dramatic traditions of Russian pianism allows us to see how general European trends of piano music were combined with national attributes of domestic culture. Taneyev’s Prelude and Fugue in G sharp minor is a climax of the album - a grandiose polyphonic cycle, one of the peaks of Russian music of the pre-revolution period.

The works of the Russian composers are performed by young pianists - graduates of the Moscow Conservatory and prize-winners of prestigious international competitions, who are worthy representatives of a new generation of Russian music performing school - Vyacheslav Gryaznov, Alexei Chernov, Mikhail Turpanov, Rustam Khanmurzin and Nikita Mndoyants.

Composed in Salzburg, February 1776, the Concert for three pianos K. 242 was commissioned by the sister of the Prince-Archbishop Colloredo, the Countess Antonia Lodron, and was intended to be performed by herself, along with her daughters Aloysia and Josepha. This work was, therefore, written for three keyboard "dilettantes". Written at the beginning of 1779, the Concert for two pianos K. 365 was probably composed to be performed by Mozart and his sister Nannerl. Its purport is undoubtedly different from that of the Concert for three pianos, as the soloists are treated with equal importance and a considerably higher technical level is required of the two pianists. Even the orchestra has a more active role here than in the previous triple concerto. The Concert for two pianos and orchestra in D minor by Poulenc was commissioned by the Princess de Polignac and it was first performed at the "International Festival of Contemporary Music" in Venice, September 5, 1932. The pianists performing were Poulenc himself and his friend Jacques Février. The work can certainly be considered cubist for its apparent lack of a coherent structure and its multifaceted physiognomy: it makes use of heterogeneous musical materials fi xed to a "support" - the writing for the orchestra - which allows the various components of musical structure to interconnect and be coherent.

Three composers for three anniversaries: Verdi, Wagner and Mascagni. In the 19th century, paraphrasing, improvisation and arranging were widely practiced and played an important role in the diffusion and cohabitation of two different, dominant musical styles typical of that period: on the one hand lyric opera, and on the other concert virtuosity. In fact, every great virtuoso of the 19th century cultivated the use of improvisation, paraphrasing and so forth, on established themes, which were frequently opera arias or popular motifs and were most frequently written for piano, but occasionally also for other instruments such as violin and piano, as presented here. This practice allowed a more capillary diffusion of opera music beyond the theatre to more reserved groups, such as the salons of high society or private circles of music enthusiasts. All of these four "improvisers" (Ritter, Wilhelmj, Bazzini and Sivori) were outstanding violinists and composers and renown international, concert musicians of their time (Camillo Sivori was Paganini's only pupil; Antonio Bazzini who garnered extraordinary praise from Robert Schumann; Ritter, husband of Wagner's niece Franziska and friend of R. Strauss, was violinist and director; Wilhelmj, child prodigy, was called by Liszt the German Paganini).

Listenprecious gems from its vaults - Nikolai Medtner’s recordings.

“There is hardly another composer who takes a more solitary place in the family of Russian musicians,” wrote Medtner’s contemporary and music critic Vyacheslav Karatygin.

Medtner was born to and grew up in a highly intellectual family of German origin which settled in Russia long ago. After more than three decades of living abroad, he stayed a spiritually Russian musician until the end of his days. Medtner’s music couldn’t boast a great number of admirers, but it irrepressibly attracted deep and subtle, although very different artists such as Rachmaninoff and Myaskovsky.

Medtner’s music happily combines traditions of German and Russian culture. Along with Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, Medtner was a prominent interpreter of his own works and one of those who opened a new era of Russian piano music.

According to the outstanding musician, pianist and thinker Heinrich Neuhaus, Medtner as a pianist “created himself everlasting glory… That never ceasing feeling that he was not just a wonderful pianist but also a great musician and magnificent composer, that his thought and hearing entirely guided his fingers and phenomenal virtuosity, and that it was inspired pianism was particularly enjoyable”.

The first volume of the anthology of Medtner’s recordings includes his smaller pieces - Novellas, the cycle Forgotten Melodies and the genre of piano fairy tale invented by the composer. The recordings were made in 1930 to 1947 in Paris and London.
