The drawings presented in the multimedia track (not included in this sample) collected by Dr. Pie Grassivaro-Gallo, Department of General Psychology, University of Padova for a thesis on the psychological impact of infibulation on young ladies, and kindly given to Fabrica especially for this project.

Chela Re is the outcome of the experimentation of five artists belonging to different cultural backgrounds merging their own traditional lyrics and tales into one articulated melody. Their main issue was bringing together rhythms and styles which apparently couldn't match into a new way of expressing emotion through sounds. Ethnic percussions, double bass, voices, keyboards and computers for the first Fabrica Musica attempt to go beyond musical genres.

Nayak was born (b. 1988) into the folk cultural and musical tradition of the Ghasi tribe of Jharkhand, India. He is highly trained in the traditional drumming, singing and dance forms of this region. In addition to vocals, he plays all the drums of this musical tradition, including the nagara, the mandar and the dholak.

Nayak's work as a Contemporary composer is innovative yet grounded in his tradition. Nayak has collaborated with musicians, dancers, theater and film and video artists from India, the United States, Japan, Ghana, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Great Britain.

He has composed and performed music in collaboration with contemporary composer Michael Galasso for the Monte Carlo Ballet in a work choreographed by Carole Armitage, and for The Lady from the Sea, directed by the internationally acclaimed theater director Robert Wilson. Nayak also composed music for numerous media projects of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, including a video and music project which was presented in 220 countries around the world. His music is featured in the travelling Giorgio Armani exhibit that opened in October 2000 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Nayak is a recipient of one of seven 2002 Creative Artist Fellowships from the US-Japan Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts and one of two 2003 Senior Performing Artist Fellowships from the American Institute of Indian Studies.

Eternal Dance - Atman

Eternal Dance - Atman
ID: ARNR2598
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Ethno

From Bombay and Calcutta to London to Chicago, any place that has a large Indian population is likely to be coming up with some interesting East/West hybrids. And such a hybrid can also have an Italian connection; Atman's Eternal Dance, for example, was edited and mastered in Florence, Italy. For Atman, East/West means fusing Indian music with Euro-dance music and electronica. On this CD, synthesizers, keyboard, and samplers are heard alongside traditional, time-honored Indian instruments like the sitar and tabla drums. Another instrument that is employed on Eternal Dance is the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute that doesn't come from either India or Europe; the shakuhachi was brought to Japan by Chinese travelers in the eighth century and went on to become Japan's most famous wind instrument. You would never hear the shakuhachi on a traditional Indian recording, but then, Eternal Dance isn't meant to be a traditional Indian recording. Atman is all about taking liberties with Indian elements, and that not only means being influenced by modern American and European styles, it also means being able to use an instrument that is revered in Japan (where Buddhist monks consider the shakuhachi sacred). While a lot of modern Indian pop favors secular lyrics, Eternal Dance maintains a spiritual, Hindu-minded outlook on haunting tracks like "Dancing With the Goddess," "I Am," and "Govinda." The latter, in fact, takes its name from one of the Hindu deities; in Hinduism, Govinda is believed to be a manifestation of God Almighty. Eternal Dance isn't for Indian purists, but those who hold Indian music, dance music, and electronica in equally high regard will find a lot to admire about this intriguing CD. ˜ Alex Henderson, Rovi All Music Guide

Radha is a sensual and harmonious meeting between west and east.

In the name of the goddess companion of Krishna, distant musical worlds come together in this musical project by Angelo Ricciardi where electronic programs and synthisizers penetrate the invocations of raga.
