Die Spinne im Netz (The Spider in the Web) - Music from Nuremberg Prints of the 16th Century.
ID: RK2305
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Renaissance
Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble

At the beginning of the 16th century Nuremberg (“The spider in the web”) was a northern European centre in which many threads of international music life came together. Early on Nuremberg had established itself as a centre of book printing. The first printing-offices that occupied themselves seriously with the printing of music, however, were those of Hieronymus Formschneider and Johannes Petreius. Most of the pieces on this recording are taken from these collections of three-part music. They contain international repertoire, including old masterworks such as Caecox and Tandernaken by Alexander Agricola, but also arrangements of German folk songs and ballads, as well as French compositions and more recent Italian forms.

As the name already betrays, the Cappella Sagittariana devotes itself entirely to the heritage of Heinrich Schütz (Latin: Henricus Sagittarius). The great church musician was granted a long study trip to Venice by his then Hessian patron, allowing Schütz to become acquainted with the aurally splendid polychoral style direct from Giovanni Gabrieli. A short time later, Schütz entered the service of the Saxon prince-elector and, with his Venetian experience, created a new Protestant church music: the works inspired by the Italian style, such as the Psalms of David and the Small Sacred Concertos, were written for the Dresden castle chapel, which for over a century was the focal point of musical and liturgical life at the electoral Saxon residence. Norbert Schuster and his Cappella Sagittariana dedicate their new series Music from Dresden’s Castle Chapel to this once so magnificent sacred building, laying the foundation stone with this aurally splendid selection of Schütz’s works.

This CD begins with the performance of the penitential psalm Gott, sei mir gnädig nach deiner Güte (anon). This astonishing work has never before been recorded on CD. The only known date which survives in a manuscript score is 1711. amacord, one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles also performs works by Schütz, Schein and Praetorius.

Gösta’s disinterest in homogenous, unified forms results in swift transitions between sonic states. Non-repetition. “I define sound in terms of structure, not in terms of expressivity.” In this, the sound-and thus probably also its sensuosity, in a gradual, carefully way-is compositionally lent weight in L‘oubli... “via the use of the harp and the keyboard instruments accordion and piano, as well as by exploiting string colours.” Such apparitions of colour change rapidly, fluctuate.

After his hospitalization for a psychological break in the 1950's, Giacinto Scelsi began composing music that was radically different from his earlier, more conventional serial works. Based on explorations of tiny details of timbral variation, his new music defied categorization. His first new works are compelling examinations of repeated notes and their microtonal neighbors. His later pieces are lush sculptures of sound, placed carefully in a silent landscape. 'Okanagon,' is a microscopic observation of repeated low notes, juxtaposed at various angles. In some "views" the ensemble plays percussively on the sides of their instruments, giving the impression of a note magnified so largely that one can hear the individual pulses.
Though it may be difficult to relate Scelsi to other music, it is not without contemporary relevance. Ligeti's string quartets and Penderecki's "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" also employ drone and microtonality. Theirs are harsh cries to Scelsi's fascinated murmur, however.
This great collection, all from various stages of Scelsi's second period, shows the development of his style. Unconventional music always risks horrifying misinterpretation but Hans Zender and the Vienna Klangforum honor Scelsi's music with a reverence for timbre and space. The performances are excellent, and beautifully recorded.

(text by Salvatore Sciarrino after Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi)

Attracted by the borderline experiences and solitary forms of a gradually darkening Renaissance, these compositions by Salvatore Sciarrino revolve around three figures from the 16th century, all of whom lost control in the field of tension between feverish living and spiritual demise, between brightness and damnation, inspired, driven and obsessed. The famous poet Torquato Tasso describes in three authentic letters (Lettere poetici) his tormenting visions of goblins and phantoms. This is all reflected in Sciarrino's intense, whispering, whirring music, in which silence is as significant as the birth of sound, "Almost naked, sober," remarks the composer, "and that is an important element when one is listening to music. Only in this way can it bore its way into the flesh."

...finally exploding in a sea of profundity from which the first words rise. Just like Baudelaire, Luca Francesconi appears to be crying out in the apparent stasis in the middle of the work: “The beautiful life! The beautiful life!” Then everything is reversed in a mirror process, with the energy being reborn of its own antimatter, or perhaps of its memory.

This is a piece about reality and fiction, about the strength of the imagination and the power of the past, and about love...
Mexican author Carlos Fuentes wrote his short story Aura in Paris in 1961. It belongs to the traditions of magic realism and Latin American ghost stories, even if it actually goes far beyond these. In an essay which is almost as long as the actual story, Fuentes not only explained the autobiographical impetus for the tale, but also described the culture-historical and motivic framework within which this story lives. It ranges from ancient Chinese literature to a Japanese story from the 17th century and on to Luis Buñuel’s Exterminating Angel, Alexandre Dumas’ Lady of the Camellias and Verdi’s La Traviata. For Fuentes, Aura is above all a story of eroticism and necrophilia, taking up the time-honoured tradition of stories about eternal fidelity and couples who are reunited in death. (Rainer Pöllmann)
