Guillaume Dufay: Sacred music from the Bologna Q15 manuscript

Guillaume Dufay: Sacred music from the Bologna Q15 manuscript
ID: SIGCD023
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music

This is the third disc recorded by The Clerks' Group for their Signum Records trilogy. The series explores repertoire in the medieval period and culminates with a selection of works by Guillaume Dufay, found in one of the great anthologies of 15th century music: the manuscript Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, MS Q15 (or "Q15" as it is known by its friends).

The Q15 manuscript contains examples of almost every conceivable musical genre of the period by a vast array of composers. The Clerks' Group has chosen to perform works by a single composer, but still the variety of forms and styles on offer is bewildering. Guillaume Dufay was a composer who witnessed and contributed to most of the revolutionary changes to occur in music composition in the 15th century. The album includes some of the earlier works so often neglected from Dufay's repertoire, and goes on to explore compositions that demonstrate this revolutionary genius. Some compositional techniques celebrated by The Clerks' Group's performance include the playful exchange of Dufay's song-like melodies between the vocal lines; and the use of mensural canon, where the same melody is sung by all voices but at slightly different speeds. These are just a few examples of the radical nature of Dufay's music as demonstrated on this recording.

The Clerks' Group brings immense diversity to the music and its performance. Their refreshing approach displays sincere empathy and passion for this astonishing repertory.

Sacred music by contemporary composers

Includes Tavener World Premiere Recording

Signum Records is delighted to announce the release of Tenebrae's second disc, Mother and Child
Tenebrae has, in its short existence, made a considerable impact with fresh and vital re-interpretations of classic works in the choral repertoire. On this new recording, innovatory and lesser-known repertoire is drawn from contemporary sources, reflecting an exploratory approach which places the group artistically at the cutting edge.
This is a distinctive and distinguished collection of works by a number of living composers, many of whom have established themselves at the creative forefront of the choral scene in recent times.

Five of the tracks are world premier recordings:
Francis Pott: The souls of the righteous Sir John Tavener: Mother and Child Alexander L’Estrange: Lute-book lullaby Jeremy Filsell: O be joyful in the Lord Francis Pott: My song is love unknown

The centre-piece of the disc is a new commission - Mother and Child - by from the world acclaimed composer Sir John Taverner.

The universal aspect of motherhood is an idea to which Tavener has returned again and again in his music. Behind this concept lies that of infinite theophanic light, an idea common to all religious traditions. Tavener’s music here interpolates a poem by Brian Keeble with Greek and Sanskrit quotations, the latter in a climactic outburst. The music, having grown in crescendo, is joined by massive organ chords and develops to become an overwhelming pulsating texture at the climax, with awesome strokes sounded on a large Hindu temple gong. The clamour dissipates at the final invocation, ‘Hail Maria’, which is prayerful and contemplative.

Hear my words ye people by Hubert Parry, a former chorister at Eton College is the first track on the album featuring some of the bestloved anthems in the church repertoire, beautifully performed by the Eton College Chapel Choir.

The choir, formed in the 14th-Century has changed a great deal since the choir school was succeeded by a music scholarship system, designed to facilitate talented choristers with their education. Although life has changed at Eton, the music passed down over five hundred years still possesses a power to stir.

Hymns, Psalms and Lamentations - Music by Robert White - Gallicantus

Hymns, Psalms and Lamentations - Music by Robert White - Gallicantus
ID: SIGCD134
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

The early music ensemble Gallicantus was born within the ranks of the world-class choir Tenebrae, when five of the choir’s regulars, each with a wealth of experience in the world of consort singing, decided to form a separate group dedicated to renaissance music. Literally meaning Rooster Song or cock crow, Gallicantus is a word from monastic antiquity for the office held just before the dawn. It evokes the renewal of life offered by the coming day.

The group is bound by a shared love of communicating text, and is committed to creating performances which draw out unifying themes within apparently diverse repertoire: To this end they are as meticulous about providing context and insight for audiences as they are about crafting interpretations of the music they love.

Prayers for Mankind - A Symphony of Prayers of Father Alexander Men - Alexander Levine - Tenebrae - Nigel Short

Prayers for Mankind - A Symphony of Prayers of Father Alexander Men - Alexander Levine - Tenebrae - Nigel Short
ID: SIGCD212
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music

Prayers for Mankind celebrates the life and writings of Father Alexander Men, a Russian Orthodox Christian priest who, whilst being little known outside of his home country during his lifetime, has come to be hailed as a saint and martyr by thousands all over the world. 2010 marks the anniversary of what would have been his 85th Birthday, as well as 20 years since his brutal assassination on the way to a Sunday morning service.

Following years of religious suppression under the communist regime, Father Alexander Men emerged as a leading Christian and humanitarian figure in Russia, through radio and TV broadcasts and his prolific written works. These prayers, set by Russian composer Alexander Levine, capture the beauty and humanity of Men’s view of the world, and is brought vividly to life by Nigel Short’s professional chamber choir Tenebrae.

From All Music Guide: Recording place:München
Golden Melodram is an opera collectors' label, presumably it ventured into Baroque choral music here because of the presence of several well-known operatic vocalists, notably bass Hans Hotter and tenor Peter Pears, in this performance. There are no texts. There are no liner notes -- just a track list. We learn that the recording was made live at a performance in Munich in 1960, but we don't know how or by whom. There are mistakes in the strings; there are a lot of coughing Bavarians in the auditorium. The recording does not just have bad sound, it has rock-fan-with-a-microphone-in-the-jeans sound. Perhaps the rock fans will be impressed to know that those of us on the classical side care enough about what we hear to sneak a recording device into the hall on occasion, too. The sound seems as if it's coming through earmuffs, and from time to time (the contralto aria "Von den Stricken meiner Sünden mich zu entbinden," CD 1, track 7, fares poorly) it drops out altogether. The problem is not in your audio equipment.
Thus forewarned, however, you can expect a very fine St. John Passion of the old-fashioned German kind. The focus for Golden Melodram may have been on the singers, and Hotter, who sings the role of Jesus, has a thick, enveloping bass voice that, despite its built-for-Valhalla quality, has a lyrical expressiveness that works well in Baroque melody. Equally beautiful, however, is conductor Eugen Jochum's shaping of the choruses; mounting in power, they may inspire the listener to wonder why nobody does it this way anymore. The Chorus of the Bavarian Radio was one of West Germany's best-trained at this point, and its mighty alto section is a joy to listen to. The Passion settings were as close as Bach came to opera, and the contrast between his polyphonic sacred choruses in the Lutheran church tradition and his Italianate dramatic sense is memorably brought out by this performance. Despite the grade Z sound, it's worth checking out for those who love Bach's passions and miss the good old days when no one would think of performing Bach's choral music with one voice to a part.
