Collection: Historical Recordings Subcollection: Clarinet Reginald Kell (clarinet), Recorded in 1940s and 1950s
Reginald Kell (1906-1981), holds an important position as one of Britain’s leading clarinet players of the last century. Hugely influential, he introduced the concept of vibrato to the orchestral clarinet. Inspired by the great singers with whom he came in contact, particularly Kirsten Flagstad, he sought to emulate their warm expressive sounds on the clarinet.
The present collection, available for the first time on CD, was recorded in the 1940s and 1950s. It breaks away from the more serious repertoire which Kell is associated with and features popular tunes and arrangements with orchestral accompaniment. This CD gives a fascinating portrait in sound, of a player who, as well as his playing commitments, also taught Benny Goodman, who was anxious to improve his grasp of the classical repertoire.
Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Kreisler’s Liebesfreud and Liebeslied
Debussy’s La Plus que Lent and La Fille aux Chevaux de Lin
These are just some of the highlights in this valuable collection. Kell’s playing was and continues to be, an inspiration to successive generations, and this disc gives the ideal opportunity for clarinettists and the general music lover, to acquaint themselves with the lighter side of one of the world’s most revered musicians. |

In his short life, Rudy Wiedoeft recorded over 300 record sides for all the major labels - many being his own compositions - and imparted his own unique style to everything he did, influencing generations of saxophonists after him.
Rudy Wiedoefts’ legacy to the musical world was not just a collection of compelling compositions and recordings, but the distinction of having introduced the saxophone as a serious voice in a truly innovative way and gaining for it a tremendous following. |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Clarinet J. X. Lefèvre:
Clarinet Sonata No. 2 in G minor
Clarinet Sonata No. 4 in E flat major
Clarinet Sonata No. 6
Clarinet Sonata No. 8
Clarinet Sonata No. 10
Clarinet Sonata No. 12
Colin Lawson (clarinet) & Sebastian Comberti (cello)
Volume 2 of the Lefèvre Sonatas completes the set of 12 from his Méthode de Clarinette (1802). Reviews of Vol. 1 praised the clarity of texture of the historical instrumentation and the consequent benefit to Lefèvre’s inventive pieces.
Repertoire on the new disc again reflects the progressive nature of the set, ranging from the concise Sonata no. 2 to the complex final Sonata no. 12, with its characterful set of variations.
These performances offer a vivid contrast to the unwieldy medium of modern B flat clarinet and piano, on which a few of the sonatas have been played from modern editions. Many of the pieces are, however, virtually unknown.
Following on from Lawson’s other highly successful CDs for Clarinet Classics, this CD will inspire players and listeners alike.
First performances using original instrumentation (C clarinet and cello).
Core repertoire (included on Associated Board and many other exam syllabi).
Important set of early Clarinet Sonatas from a celebrated pedagogue. |
