CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS
ID: GD251
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Ivan Spassov (1934-1996) belongs to the generation of Bulgarian composers who developed their abilities and won recognition during the 1970s and the 1980s. His work has invariably roused interest although it was not always accepted unanimously, and sometimes was even met with complete negation. Particularly important are the vocal creations of Spassov in which he imposed his own style and compositional techniques. Most of his choral songs became basic repertoire; much of them are examples of innovation in the genre. The CD includes three of Ivan Spassov's last opuses, where the theme of death dominates. Deeply connected with the Bulgarian tradition, yet at the same time employing the avant-guard tendencies of the 1950s and 1960s, Ivan Spassov combined both trends in his music. One example of Bulgarian passion is Easter Music for Christ's Suffering, Death and Resurrection, rationalizing the drama of Christ from the Orthodox point of view. The typical for the Catholic tradition form Miserere was made (for the first time by a Bulgarian musician) into a splendid composition for choir, orchestra and soloists, bringing the meaning and the comfort of the psalm. The excellent recordings in the CD present the spiritual world of an exceptional musician and intellectual, who contributed for throwing a bridge between the Bulgarian and the West-European cultures.

Soloists: Kalina Zhekova (soprano), Georgi Lazarov (bass-baritone), Stepan Byulbyulian (evangelist), Alexandrina Toromanova (organ), Tiha Genova (soprano), Donka Lozanova (soprano), Valeria Mircheva (mezzo-soprano), Lilia Ilieva (mezzo-soprano)

Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection

Recorded in MS Music Agency Studio, USA, 2001-2003

The new release "Passing with the Time" makes an interesting accent in the catalogue of Gega New. The CD includes songs which are popular and loved by listeners, and have been recorded close to the original works - by using voice without accompaniment, or only one instrument, or voice and instrument. The programme is a result of a two-years' work by Milen Slavov, who is composer, music producer, accordionist and has been living in the USA since 1997. Milen Slavov taught at the California University of Los Angeles and has twice received Performing Arts Fellowships in Music Composition; from the California Arts Council, and the Mississippi Arts Commission. The programme also contains the performance of Zhivka Papancheva - a singer, who has also been living in the USA for some years now and takes part in all concerts of Milen Salvov. Some other colleagues of his from Bulgaria are also featured - Petyo Kostadinov (who is at present soloist of the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra), Lyuben Dossev (who currently teaches at the Academy of Music and Dance Arts in Plovdiv, and is also conductor of Ensemble Trakia's Orchestra), and Teodor Dimitrov.
The release stresses especially on the ancient vocal and instrumental performance, reminiscent of the unique and authentic Bulgarian folklore style.

MLADEN KOYNAROV - Voice of the Rhodopes

MLADEN KOYNAROV - Voice of the Rhodopes
ID: GD321
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Folk Music

The Rhodope Mountains has been the birth place of many Bulgarian singers and musicians. The specific songs of the region and the unusual pentatonic, which are not characteristic for other folk regions in the country, as well as the typical kaba (low-tone) gaida make the music of the Rhodopes a unique sound palette. Mladen Koynarov’s songs introduce an additional richness to its colours.
Born in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, in the village of Oryahovets in the Smolyan district, Mladen Koynarov began his artistic career as a soloist in a concert group (1966), and in 1970 he won a position in the “Rhodopa” State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances in Smolyan. To this day he is a soloist with this ensemble.
He has personally uncovered and learned over 350 folk songs of the central Rhodopes, some of which were released on LPs. He has also recorded over 70 songs for Bulgarian National Radio and participated on more than 140 television programs. In 1978 he received the second prize in the Prix de Folklore competition of Radio Bratislava, and he is also the recipient of the Silver Lyre (1995) and Golden Lyre (1998) awards of the Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Professionals.
The singer passes his experience and skill on to the young people. In 2000 he founded a school for folk singing in Smolayn. His students are laureates of regional and national competitions and festivals.

Accompanied by Georgi Mussorliev - gaida, Peter Yanev - gaida, orchestra of the Rhodopa Folk Songs and Dances Ensemble - Smolyan, Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra

This CD couples two early Baroque vocal works that typify the new style that was emerging in Italy in the early 1600's. Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda is Monteverdi's madrigal setting of Tasso's epic poem, take full advantage of the drama inherent in the text.
