Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble Peter Wiegold has spent many years studing Indian and Gamelan music, playing with leading Indian musicians in the Gemini-Bhavan Ensemble and in the English Gamelan Orchestra.
He is currently Professor, Head of Music Research, at Brunel University. In 2007 Peter wrote a highly acclaimed large-scale work for the BBC Proms entitled, He is armoured without for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, musicians from Uzbekistan, the Coldstream Guards, 80 brass players plus solo trumpet and trombone. It was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society large-scale composition prize. Peter’s music is influenced by his strong interest in eastern philosophy, especially Buddhism.
Peter Wiegold’s music is a mixture of fully notated, freely improvised and anything in between - he often allows the performers to participate in the creative process. This is his first portrait recording on NMC.
Works on this disc include the plaintive, pastoral Earth, receive an honoured guest, for cor anglais and strings, inspired by WH Auden’s well known elegy for WB Yeats; the elemental Kalachakra for large ensemble depicting the creation of the universe using Tibetan bells and brass; and the bittersweet, Viennese Earth and Stars, commissioned for the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death and featuring 4 harmonicas to represent an ancient funeral band, dug up from the soil by future generations.
Kalachakra / notes inégales, Peter Wiegold / Earth, Receive an Honoured Guest: Melinda Maxwell (cor anglais), Southbank Sinfonia, Peter Wiegold, conductor / Les Roses: Juliet Fraser (soprano), Martin Butler (piano) / Earth and Stars / notes inégales, Peter Wiegold |

Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Vocal and Piano Bennett is renowned for his film scores and his jazz performance as much as for his challenging concert works.
His film music includes scores for Far from the Madding Crowd, Murder on the Orient Express and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Richard Rodney Bennett has long had a private passion for making collages (and knitting!) and the cover image on this CD is one of his creations, currently displayed at an exhibition of his work in Chelsea.
Born in Broadstairs, Kent, in 1936, he has lived in New York City since 1979. Richard Rodney Bennett received a CBE in 1977, and was knighted in 1998. Bennett studied with Pierre Boulez in Paris.
This new recording spans five decades of Bennett’s song-writing, cherry-picking some of his most accessible and lyrical pieces, from the melodic Songs Before Sleep, performed by Roderick Williams, to the 1920s dance rhythms of A History of the Thé Dansant, the dramatic and rarely-performed Tom O'Bedlam's Song for tenor and cello (written for Peter Pears) and the enchanting A Garland for Marjory Fleming.
A wonderful recording, stunningly performed by a collection of internationally acclaimed soloists. |

Subcollection: Songs Location recording by David Lumsdaine
(tape montage/re-composition)
Big Meeting is an extraordinary collage of voices, speeches, songs, brass bands and their electronic transformations, which David Lumsdaine constructed from location recordings of the 1971 Durham Miners’ Gala - a record of one of the last of the annual meetings before the county’s pits were closed.
Over the last forty years David Lumsdaine has composed a body of strikingly original music, including Aria for Edward John Eyre (recorded on NMC D007), Hagoromo, Mandala 3, Bagatelles, Mandala 5, Garden of Earthly Delights and Kali Dances. His work is influenced not only by the music of other traditions and cultures, but also the music of the natural world. At its heart, his music embodies his experience of the Australian landscape - the variety of its shapes, rhythms, colours and textures: the vitality of its creatures; its sudden violence; its sense of unlimited space and time. His passion for the natural world and its conservation expresses itself more literally in his archive of birdsong and recorded soundscapes, many of which have been released on CD. |

Collection: Vocal Collection Diana Garden, lounge, chill out, trendy, electronica, compilation
La Dolce Vita is an album of Euro-chillout as compiled by the Future Loop Foundation, and based in large part upon the repertoire used in mixes at the Diana Majestic hotel, a crossing-grounds for the old and new traditions of fashion and culture in Milan. Here, the beats never get too hard and the riffs never get too loud. There's a definite European atmosphere inherent in the works, with an urban sophistication in the production as well as performances that are made part of the finished mixed products. The bulk of the instrumentation would seem to be keyboards, synths, and drum machines (along with the ever-present soothing vocals), but there are certainly other musicians making themselves heard. "Chunga's Revenge" features cuts from a tango ensemble on bandoneon and violin, "Soft" includes a cut of an old Chicago number, and slight horn sections are present here and there. That said, the focus of a chillout album is rarely the virtuosity of the performers so much as the overall ambience created by the album as a whole. In this respect, the album does an excellent job. It's a casual listen, but there's a wealth of detail to be heard by a listener with the desire to get a deeper effect. Either way, the result is an enjoyable one for those looking for a nice bit of background music for a light evening. ˜ Adam Greenberg |

Lounge, chill out, electronica, compilation
Without forgetting a typical tradition of "APERITIVO" in Milan, Italy, the hotel "SHERATON DIANA MAJESTIC" has adopted a new concept of "staying in a hotel without suitcases" as the creative hospitality method of behaviour trough the international hotels of New York, Paris and London.
The "DIANA" is known as the unique place of meeting point for the atmosphere of the fashion field, the show, the culture and the liberal professionalism. However, the "DIANA" is mainly focused on its own soundtrack idea: it is a CD trilogy as an integration of its world-wide brand. The first CD of the series, which is called "TRIBE" is one of the best electronic, lounge and chill out compilations. "DIANA GARDEN TRIBE" can be considered as a complement or an alternative choice to the famous international productions "COSTES HOTEL" and "BUDDHABAR".
This compilation will be an anticipation of the summer musical programme of the "DIANA GARDEN". The circumstance of the "AFRO" internal designed atmosphere is treated with lightness and elegance in order to remember Latin and Mediterranean styles. The heat album production can not be missed in any house of this kind of music lovers and also in the best trendy places. |
