Rodolfus Choir & Southern Sinfonia, Ralph Allwood
"The B minor" - that phrase alone resonates with gravity in the hearts and minds of those who love as no other the music of J.S. Bach.
This disc sees the Rodolfus Choir at their best, as renowned Bach interpreters, having sung his works across the UK to great acclaim. Following a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and performance at Holy Trinity Guildford at the end of 2009, this disc, recorded in the chapel of Charterhouse School, continues their ever-growing catalogue of extraordinary recordings and follows their acclaimed recording of music by Herbert Howells, released earlier this year (SIGCD190)

The Huddersfield Choral society has one of the longest and most fruitful relationships with Handel’s famous Messiah than perhaps any other chorus in the world: they first performed it in concert during their inception year of 1836, and have continued to do so annually since 1860 with concerts the world over as well as in their hometown of Huddersfield.
Recorded live in concert in December 2010, this new recording combines the famous ensemble with the Northern Sinfonia and four world-class professionals, under the direction of Jane Glover CBE. The disc begins with John Wainwright’s ‘Christians Awake’, a traditional addition to the Messiah programme at their concerts in Huddersfield.

Jean-Luc Darbellay - A Portrait

Jean-Luc Darbellay - A Portrait
ID: CLAVES502702-3
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Choir

This release is due to a collaboration between the composer and Italian conductor Fabio Luisi, who first became acquainted with Darbellay’s music when he conducted the world premiere of “Oyama” in Geneva in 2000 and five years later the world premiere of his Requiem. Five other pieces for different instrumental ensembles round off this ‘Portrait’ collection, making this the perfect introduction to this fascinating composer.

He is one of the most active Swiss composers at home and abroad. His name regularly appears in the programmes of the most prestigious European concert halls (Maison de Radio France, Geneva’s Victoria Hall, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig…) and contemporary music festivals (Festival Présences, Vienna Modern, World New Music Days…). Born in 1946, Jean-Luc Darbellay studied clarinet, orchestral conducting and composition with Cristóbal Halffter, Dimitri Terzakis and (above all) with Edison Denisov at the Conservatory in Berne. He participated in seminars with Pierre Boulez at the College of France and at IRCAM. He completed his studies with Klaus Huber and Heinz Holliger within the framework of the Lucerne Festival. His interests touch upon all forms and genres of music, which is reflected in his very eclectic catalogue of compositions. Claves is pleased to present a number of his masterpieces in co-production with Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (MDR) in Leipzig. The 2-CD production is the fruit of the intimate collaboration between the composer and Italian conductor Fabio Luisi, who first became acquainted with Darbellay’s music when he conducted the world premiere of “Oyama” in Geneva in 2000, and five years later the world premiere of his Requiem, a commission from MDR. Five other pieces for different instrumental ensembles round off this “portrait” collection, the perfect introduction to this fascinating composer’s universe.

Handel- Messiah - The Sixteen, Harry Christophers and Special Edition Bonus CD-Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba

Handel- Messiah - The Sixteen, Harry Christophers and Special Edition Bonus CD-Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba
ID: COR16062
CDs: 3
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

Arguably the most famous oratorio ever written and certainly Handel’s best known work, Messiah needs little introduction. Composed in a staggering twenty-four days Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742 where it received a rapturous welcome. Not so the following year when it premiered in London to a distinctly hostile reception. It wasn’t until Messiah began to be presented

in charity performances at the Foundling Hospital in London that the public started to embrace the work we now regard as Handel’s greatest composition.

On this disc The Sixteen and Harry Christophers are joined by four soloists all revered Handelians who have had a long association with The Sixteen.

Miraculously, the Eton Choirbook survived Henry VIII's ransacking of the monasteries. Thanks to its survival, the sacred music of the English fifteenth-century is still with us, conjuring up the atmosphere and spirit of the glorious cathedrals for which it was written. It also gives us a tantalising glimpse into a wealth of choral music which was lost.
