Jesus Torres (born in Saragossa, 1965) is one of the key figures in a very talented generation of Spanish composers who have made a significant contribution to the further development of music in Europe. While they share neither a style nor an ideational background, they do share their point of departure: artistically speaking, they are all "grandchildren" of the great innovators of the post-war period; they came to music after the avant-garde had already gained a permanent, emphatic foothold at the academies - and begun their subsequent march into aesthetic isolation. In order to break free from this, Torres and his colleagues set off on highly individual and divergent musical paths that, viewed as a whole, still set a remarkable example.

As though he were an architect in sound - the architect of an ongoing Revolution of the Viaduct (Paul Klee) - this composer discovers in his piano pieces something which, for a master mason, might represent discarded corner-stones: the heart of the secret. It becomes apparent that in the pieces for solo piano - themselves like a collection of cornerstones in his output - a small collection of musical gems has come into being: crystalline, glittering, and utterly lucid both in form and appearance. The guiding and enlightening code for them might read: distillation by diminution. (Wolfgang Hofer)

Pollack was recently featured in a profile by the New York Times headlined "Piano Man, Winning Russian Hearts and Minds" in which it was quoted by a recording executive "he is now a legend in Russia." Another profile featured in the International Herald Tribune, headlined, "A Musical 'love affair' with Russia. His most recent CD, entitled "COLORS", with major works from Schumann and Liszt has received international critical acclaim… "the great Schumann Fantasy is played with sweep and passion… (Pollack) plays all three sections with all the emotion, imagination and color necessary to make it sound like a disciplined yet grand improvisation," and "Liszt's two blockbusters (the Mephisto Waltz, Funerailles) add additional incentives to acquire this outstanding recording," wrote Alan Becker, American Record. Among other international releases are Pollack's Grammy-nominated CD for Naxos, the complete solo piano works of Samuel Barber, which was heralded as "prodigious pianism of fiery energy, dynamic articulation and elan," Repertoire Magazine, Paris, France. Pollack first garnered the music world's attention when he became a prizewinner in the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Following, he concertized throughout the former Soviet Union and became the first American to record there for the Melodya label, records that sold in the millions throughout the former Soviet Union over several decades and continue to be on the market in Russia today. Many of these recordings were re-issued worldwide under several different labels, most recently on Cambria, distributed worldwide, entitled, "The Legendary Moscow Recitals" recordings of Pollack's early years. Pollack has held several visiting artist faculty positions including The Juilliard School, Columbia University and Yale's School of Music. Kartuli Musika • Music from Georgia by Nassidse, Loboda, Zinzadse

Kartuli Musika • Music from Georgia by Nassidse, Loboda, Zinzadse

Sulchan Nassidse was a pianist, teacher of composition and, from 1962 onwards, a board member of the Georgian Orchestral Association. He ranks among the best-known Georgian composers. His creativity is expressed mainly through symphonic works, with compositions including three symphonies, two piano concertos, a violin concerto and two string quartets.

Nassidse composed his Chamber Symphony No. 3 in 1969, and dedicated it to the Georgian Chamber Orchestra. This work in one movement shows a fascinating intensity of expression and richness of tone colour, with its rapid changes of mood and a tonality suggestive of the Orient. The work tells a tale full of mysterious poetry and magic, in which an underlying mechanical menace and cries of anguish repeatedly break through to the surface. The conclusion remains open, unresolved and unclear. The soft dialogue between two solo violins suddenly falls silent. Nassidse’s unsurpassed feeling for tension and drama, coupled with a virtuosity of tonal expression which makes the highest possible demands upon the technical capabilities of stringed instruments, have produced a work in which the conventional symphonic framework is replaced by a linear, narrative structure.
IgorLoboda Our lives are multi-faceted. We experience a combination of passions, forces of nature, victories and defeats, love and hate. In this chaotic world, only one factor remains constant: time. Time moves on at a constant speed, and nothing or nobody can halt its progress.
Sulchan Fjodorowitsch Zinzadse, one of the most significant Georgian composers, began his musical career in the 1940s as a cellist with the Georgian State String Quartet. One of his earliest compositions, a collection of miniatures for string quartet based upon Georgian folk songs, was an immediate success. Although Zinzadse also composed a number of operas, ballets, symphonies and concertos, his compositions for string quartet and chamber orchestra remain his most significant works, and represent an important contribution to Georgian musical tradition. Zinzadse’s Miniatures for String Quartet (arranged for string orchestra by the composer himself) were written at various times in the composer’s career. They include transcriptions and arrangements of Georgian folk melodies, in which Zinzadse skilfully and impressively succeeds in transposing the contrasting nature of folk songs into the medium of the string quartet. Whether in lyrical pieces such as “Indi Mindi” and “Suliko”, the humorous “Zoli gamididgula” (the nagging wife), the highly effective “Satschidao” (a melody used to accompany sporting contests) or the “Mtskemsuri” (shepherds’ dance) - the composer has produced masterpieces which, whilst rich in tone colour, remain true to the simplicity of the folk tradition.

Olga Neuwirth’s music is full of shifts, ruptures, deformations and associative relationships. Her works build upon a various materials of sound, image and language taken from highly diverse backgrounds, which she interconnects without evening out their intrinsic characteristics. Usually marked by unpredictable transformations during which the music branches out like lush organic growth, the composition comes to reflect the heterogeneous starting materials.
These also include a special way of handling the musical instruments - the composer manipulates the tone colors, usually through untypical tuning and preparation, thus providing the groundwork for the creation of highly differentiated musical situations. This roughening of sounds cannot be taken as a mere rejection of conventional euphony. Rather, it articulates a need to capture the potential that lies dormant in these sound producers and harness it for the process of composition thus creating a means of expression based on these unusual ways of sound production in order to formulate contemporary musical figures. Although the composer always traces her vocabulary back to the process of generation that begins with the acoustics and resonance of the instruments used, the process can be understood most clearly in her chamber music instrumentation, especially in the works composed for strings. Georges Aperghis - Crosswind

Georges Aperghis was not the first well-known composer for musical theatre who neglected the less "spectacular" varieties of music. But unlike the "symphonic form," which Aperghis has rarely considered since his initial attempt in 1972, chamber music recurs throughout his oeuvre. As though staging a theatrical work, Aperghis plays his game in a chamber music hall with new instrumental combinations, creating a connection between the instruments and European musical tradition.

XASAX Ensemble de saxophones modulable: In 1992 the three French saxophonists Serge Bertocchi, Pierre-Stéphane Meugé, and Jean-Michel Goury joined with Marcus Weiss of Switzerland to form XASAX - Ensemble de saxophones modulable. Their experience with contemporary music as soloists and chamber musicians in ensembles like Klangforum Wien and ensemble recherche flowed into their development of a new repertoire for saxophone. XASAX pursues a variety of historical connections, establishes ties to seemingly alien trends, and thereby creates new terrain for this young instrument.
