Audiences worldwide, across five continents - North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa - recognize the pianism of Daniel Pollack for its signature colors in sound, coupled with over-the-edge thrilling virtuosity, giving his performances an electrifying element that catches the imagination of concert goers. Worldwide critics speak about "his astonishing pianism", Washington Post, and "his dramatic tension, poignant lyricism," Diapason Magazine, Paris, France and "his torrents of sound that turned feathery flurries of delicate sounds," Los Angeles Times. Pollack was recently featured in a profile by the New York Times headlined "Piano Man, Winning Russian Hearts and Minds" in which it was quoted by a recording executive "he is now a legend in Russia." Another profile featured in the International Herald Tribune, headlined, "A Musical 'love affair' with Russia. Highlights from appearances as soloist with orchestras worldwide include with conductor Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia, as part of the White Nights Festival; with conductor Yuri Simonov and the Moscow State Philharmonic; as well as soloist with London's Royal Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, Korea, Hong Kong Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra of Bogota, Colombia, among others. In the U.S. concert appearances include, as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, among numerous others. Pollack has performed solo recitals in the major music centers of the world including London's Royal Festival Hall, Vienna's Musikverein, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Buenos Aires' Teatro Colon, Seoul's Arts Center, Tel Aviv's University Concert Series, Moscow's Conservatory Great Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, Los Angeles' Music Center. Pollack is much in demand on international competition juries. He has participated several times on the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow as well as on the Queen Elizabeth International Piano Competition in Brussels; Vladimir Horowitz, Kiev, Ukraine; Leeds, England; Maria Callas, Athens, Greece; Jose Iturbi, Los Angeles, California; Hamamatsu and Sonoda Competitions in Japan; UNISA in Pretoria, South Africa; Anton Rubinstein, Dresden, Germany; Prokofiev, St. Petersburg, Russia; and the Rachmaninoff in Moscow, among others. His most recent CD, entitled "COLORS", with major works from Schumann and Liszt has received international critical acclaim… "the great Schumann Fantasy is played with sweep and passion… (Pollack) plays all three sections with all the emotion, imagination and color necessary to make it sound like a disciplined yet grand improvisation," and "Liszt's two blockbusters (the Mephisto Waltz, Funerailles) add additional incentives to acquire this outstanding recording," wrote Alan Becker, American Record. Among other international releases are Pollack's Grammy-nominated CD for Naxos, the complete solo piano works of Samuel Barber, which was heralded as "prodigious pianism of fiery energy, dynamic articulation and elan," Repertoire Magazine, Paris, France. Other CDs include an all-Chopin recital recorded in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic in St. Petersburg, Russia, released by Sony as well as two CDs of popular short romantic works for Four Winds. Pollack first garnered the music world's attention when he became a prizewinner in the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Following, he concertized throughout the former Soviet Union and became the first American to record there for the Melodya label, records that sold in the millions throughout the former Soviet Union over several decades and continue to be on the market in Russia today. Many of these recordings were re-issued worldwide under several different labels, most recently on Cambria, distributed worldwide, entitled, "The Legendary Moscow Recitals" recordings of Pollack's early years. Pollack has held several visiting artist faculty positions including The Juilliard School, Columbia University and Yale's School of Music. Pollack is currently on the faculty at the Thornton School of Music, of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Pollack began his studies at the age of four with the renowned prodigy teacher Mme. Ethel Leginska and made his debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of nine, performing the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School from the class of the legendary Rosina Lhevinne, herself a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory. Pollack continued his graduate studies at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna under a Fulbright scholarship with Bruno Seidlhofer, at the Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy with Guido Agosti and was awarded a Prix de Positano, Italy for a special Beethoven Master Class with the late Wilhelm Kempff. Daniel Pollack's cutting edge web site www.danielpollack.com, in which he can be seen and heard in a live concert from Moscow's Great Hall, has been a favorite of classical musicians worldwide, achieving a record number of visitors annually and winning the prestigious Informative Music Site Award.

Cesar Franck - Piano Quintet and Violin Sonata - The Schubert Ensemble

Cesar Franck - Piano Quintet and Violin Sonata - The Schubert Ensemble
ID: CHRCD004
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

This disc from the renowned Schubert Ensemble bring the spirit of the Paris “Belle Epoque” alive. Newly re-mastered recordings of Franck’s Piano Quintet in F minor and his Sonata for violin & piano in A are performed with enthusiasm by the experienced Schuberts.

Franck was known as a man “enamoured of gentleness and consolation”, but these works tell a different story of an earthier man, less chaste, freed of starch and wing collar. Central to the quintet in particular was a woman; not Franck’s dutiful wife, but a young student, Augusta Holmes “decorously rampant” and “possessed of bold beautiful features, abundant golden hair, and handsome breasts of which she was justifiably proud”. Rimsky-Korsakov admired her, but in Paris, Saint-Saens and Franck fought over her. Franck’s wife would have known that the emotions so readily expressed in this Quintet were not for her, but for Augusta, Franck’s “impure and seductive” organ student.

F. Liszt - Alexander Strukov, piano

The name of Alexander Strukov means a brilliant virtuosity, perfect technique, the sound of the Konstantin Igumnov school - soft, singing, and deep. His performers’ conceptions are always thought over, and the musical forms are well-balanced. His bright temperament is controlled by a powerful intellect; he's got a great erudition. This is what has always enraptured me in Alexander Strukov's performances. I remember him as a young man who had just entered the Moscow Conservatory (in 1983); before that, he studied with Evgeni Timakin, a pupil of Konstantin Igumnov, an outstanding musician and the Central Music School professor. He also studied with the wonderful Lev Vlassenko, the unforgettable musician and my friend; Alexander took his teacher's perfect taste and artistry. This allowed him to repeat Lev Vlassenko's success, winning Ferenc Liszt International piano competition in Budapest (1991). Alexander gives lots of concerts in Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Japan and other countries. He had played with many eminent conductors, among them - Vladimir Ziva, Veronika Dudarova, Pavel Yadykh, Andras Ligeti, Roland Bader, Gianmario Cavallaro, Mikhail Pletnev and others. He gives a lot of master classes in Russia and abroad. Alexander Strukov is also a fine composer. He is the author of two piano concertos, piano quintet, other chamber and piano works. In 2006 he won the Moscow Conservatory competition for the best cadenza to a Mozart concerto. One of his cadenzas - to the third movement of the Piano concerto no. 21 - I have recorded on a CD; I am also going to perform his cadenzas to the Sixth Concerto. Professor Vlassenko invited the young laureate to become his assistant at the Moscow Conservatory. Since 2004, he works as my assistant. At present, he has got his own class and a rank of an assistant professor. I greatly appreciate his skills as a pianist and pedagogue; the students admire him, he plays wonderfully, and I am proud that he became a member of our "Konstantin Igumnov" department
