A native of St. Petersburg, Aylen Pritchin graduated from the Moscow Conservatory where he studied with professor and People’s Artist of the USSR Eduard Grach. Aylen is a winner of numerous awards and prizes, including a special prize of the judges of the XIV Tchaikovsky International Competition in 2011 and a grand prix of the Long-Thibaud Competition in 2014.
He is a scholarship holder of the New Names and Russian Performing Art foundations, and a participant of the Stars of the 21st Century project of the Moscow Philharmonic Society.
The name of Lukas Geniušas became known in wide quarters of domestic music lovers after he received a silver medal at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010. In 2015, the pianist was awarded the second prize of the XV Tchaikovsky International Competition and won rave reviews from the critics. A grandson of the famous pianist and professor
Vera Gornstayeva, Lukas Geniušas received his first contest award at the age of twelve. Today he plays concerts at the most prestigious venues of the world.
“It was clear right from his first touch upon the keyboard - we have a world class pianist before us … a remarkable and mature master with unforeseen prospects of a developing talent,” wrote a well-known critic about Lukas Geniušas. Aylen Pritchin and Lukas Geniušas perform works by Russian composers of the 19th and 20th centuries: Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s minicycle Souvenir d’un lieu cher, violin transcriptions of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet suites (co-written with Samuel Dushkin) and Leonid Desyatnikov’s Like the Old Organ-Grinder.

Recorded live at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on September 29, 2016.

Firma Melodiya presents Low Strings, the first release from the Melodiya Apriori series.
For the past twenty-five years, a Russian label hasn’t released a project as uncommon and tricky as this. It is absolutely beyond the conventional notion of “chamber music recording,” neither by instrumental lineup (a viola, a cello and a double bass - it’s hardly the most advantageous of combinations that coincides lay belief), nor by selection of the music genres and styles. Matthew Locke, a representative of early English Baroque, Beethoven with his comic “eyeglasses” duet, his contemporary Bernhard Romberg, and next to them Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Ryabov and composers of West European avant-garde with electronics attached.
The artistic will of the performers is perhaps the principal consolidating point of the album. It first of all applies to violist, organizer and enlightener Serge Poltavsky who united the effort of cellist Evgeny Rumyantsev, double bass player Grigory Krotenko (his role in the recording of the album is one of the leading ones) and sound engineer of the Moscow Conservatory and creator of the single sonic space of the Low Strings Mikhail Spassky.
It is also gratifying to hear not a distilled studio work, but live concert sound recorded at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 2016. So, Melodiya, as it did many years ago, documents the recent past again. The fact itself makes us confident that this recording will find its listener.

"Sofia" String Quartet has recorded three of the late quartets by the great Russian composer, a brilliant expression of the his talent and sensitivity. Each of them reveals the richness of the composer's creative imagination, demonstrates original solutions of form, structure, modes and metric rhythms. Quartet No. 8 is of programmatic character and is related to one of the leading themes in the music of Shostakovich - the theme of war, anti-humanism and the staunch support of the idea of peace and humanity. Quartets Nos. 10 and 11 are composed for friends of Shostakovich, associated with his personal life and creative career. Of particular interest is No. 11, consisting of 7 movements, each of which with an emotional context present in its title. The performance of the works by "Sofia" String Quartet is remarkable for its technical virtuosity and freedom - each of the four instrumentalists is a superb musician - with a mastery in the rendition of the multitude of nuances and moods, varying from grief and tragic resignation to joyful intoxication, joke and emotional outbursts.
