Bernard Herrmann -Suite for String Quartet -Tippett Quartet, Julian Bliss, Clarinet

Bernard Herrmann -Suite for String Quartet -Tippett Quartet, Julian Bliss, Clarinet
ID: SIGCD234
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Quartet

Bernard Herrmann was perhaps one of the greatest musical all-rounders of the 20th Century. Although he is best known for his scores to perhaps some of the most iconic films ever made („Vertigo“, „Citizen Kane“, „Psycho“), he was also a talented composer for the concert hall, with an early career marked out by his skill as a conductor - praised by Stravinsky amongst others, who autographed Hermann“s score for his Symphony in 3 Movements with "To the excellent musician and conductor, Bernard Herrmann. Cordially, I. Stravinsky."

The Tippett Quartet capture the energy and musical finesse of Herrmann‘s works in this recording, accompanied for Souvernirs de Voyage by the clarinetist Julian Bliss and featuring a new arrangement of his score for „Psycho“.

London Love - Ensemble Rossignol

London Love - Ensemble Rossignol
ID: ACDBH050-2
CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Ensemble Rossignol, a leading recorder and theorbo ensemble, perform works from the master composers in the shadow of Hanel.

Pieces by Loeillet, Axel D. Ruoff, Babell, Bach, Geminiani and Handel himself all in celebration of the city that played host to Handel's music and became his creative home.

London was an exceptionally prosperous city in the 18th century, which was reflected by its lively musical society.Handel, a German by birth, played a dominant role in this. Although he travelled extensively, he spent most of his life in this city and was even officially made a British subject in 1727. Although he was primarily known for his brilliant operas and oratorios, with their treasure trove of splendid arias, he was also a composer of lovely and sophisticated chamber music works. At this time, composers from all different countries travelled to London in the hope of launching a successful career there. However, this proved a difficult venture indeed for most of them, as they remained firmly overshadowed by Handel.
Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, born in Ghent, moved to London in 1705 after he completed his studies. He started as principal oboist of the Queen’s Theatre and later at the Opera, making a name for himself as a virtuoso flute player. He was also known as the first composer of recorder music of renown in England and thanks to his efforts the instrument gained substantial popularity. John Walsh published his music in London under the name: John Loeillet of London.
The British composer William Babell spent his entire life in London. His work is strongly influenced by Handel, whom we can presume to have been one of his teachers. The exceptionally virtuoso ornamentation in the slow movements of his sonatas has been written out meticulously.
In the first half of the 18th century Handel enjoyed even greater fame than his contemporary Johann Sebastian Bach. Although both composers were born in 1685 within a distance shorter than 200 km of each other - Handel in Halle en Bach in Eisenach - the two never met. Bach’s solo sonatas for cello lend themselves exceptionally well to the theorbo.
The Italian violin prodigy Francesco Geminiani was born in Lucca. In 1714 he too left for London, where he gained a formidable reputation as a violinist and teacher of the violin. His best-known work is The Art of Playing on the Violin (1731), one of the earliest treatises on the technical aspects of the instrument. The aria What shall I do to show how much I love her from Purcell’s opera Dioclesian was originally set for flute and harpsichord.

The Soul Rests Eternal - Mike Sheppard - Caroline Dale - English Chamber Orchestra - Steve Sidwell

The Soul Rests Eternal - Mike Sheppard - Caroline Dale - English Chamber Orchestra - Steve Sidwell
ID: SIGCD232
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Cello

A close brush with his own mortality eighteen months ago was the driving force behind Mike Sheppard's decision to focus solely on his composing, putting aside his other commercial interests as a music publisher and producer. The Soul Rests Eternal marks the first fruits of this new direction.
The works take the listener on a journey exploring the emotional landscape of grief, bereavement and loss, but also hope, optimism and a celebration of life. Seen through the twin perspectives of the composer's eyes and a more global view, the album takes an emotional journey from the immediate to the eternal; the banal to the sublime. A 'radio-friendly' collection of three to six minute works, Classic FM have confirmed playlisting for the album upon its release in November.
Performances on the disc come from internationally renowned cellist Caroline Dale and the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the emmy-award nominated musican Steve Sidwell.

The Soul Rests Eternal is a unique new album of powerful, emotive music that has multi-faceted depths and an interesting human-interest story at every turn. 14 new works for solo cello and orchestra take the listener on a journey exploring the emotional landscape of grief, bereavement and loss, but also hope, faith, optimism and a celebration of life.
Caroline Dale (cello soloist on Dario Marianelli’s oscar-winning score to the film ‘Atonement’) was an instinctive choice as soloist, capturing the intensely soulful voice of the cello and exploiting fully the vast range of emotions encountered here. As Principal cellist of the English Chamber Orchestra, this CD presented another opportunity for the ECO to record again on Signum Classics, following their recent recording with harpist Claire Jones.
Conceived as an arts initiative, this album breaks new ground in that it offers an inspired way for the arts, charity and business sectors to work together, in this case serving to promote the Child Bereavement Charity, with which the composer had previously been involved.
This arts/charity/business initiative sees 20% of the music publishing rights assigned to CBC. This means the charity will not only benefit from record sales, but also from live performances, radio & TV broadcasts and sheet music sales as well as whenever the music gets used in film or TV. And because the charity will own its share for life of copyright, CBC will go on benefitting for 70 years after the composer's death. The charity will also enjoy a raised profile through the publicity generated by the album.

Towards Silence - Sir John Tavener - Medici Quartet - Finzi Quartet - Cavaleri Quartet - Fifth Quadrant

Towards Silence - Sir John Tavener - Medici Quartet - Finzi Quartet - Cavaleri Quartet - Fifth Quadrant
ID: SIGCD221
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: World Premiere Recording

World Premiere Recording

This premiere recording of John Tavener's Towards Silence, written for four string quartets and a large Tibetan bowl, explores the nature of consciousness and the process of dying. Tavener had long wanted to write the work and persuaded Professor Paul Robertson (leader of the Medici Quartet and Co-Founder of the Music Mind Spirit Trust) to perform it. However, shortly after the manuscript was completed both men became critically ill and close to death themselves.

By August 2008 Robertson had recovered sufficiently to resuscitate the project, which had now taken on a profound significance for himself and for Tavener. The members of the Medici Quartet immediately agreed to reform and identified young professional string quartets with whom to perform and to act as musical mentors.

Tavener's vision was for all four quartets to be positioned high up in the cathedral dome, invisible to the audience, and arranged in the shape of a cross, bringing the Christian, Bhuddist and Hindu religions together. This sense of space has been captured in the recording, which is an SACD hybrid that can also be enjoyed on a surround sound setup.

THE EIGHT SEASONS - SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE - Jonatan Morton, violin

THE EIGHT SEASONS - SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE - Jonatan Morton, violin
ID: SIGCD231
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

A unique disc from one of Scotland's most dynamic and versatile groups - the Scottish Ensemble is a tight-knit band of outstanding string players from around Europe who perform regularly together under Artistic Director, Jonathan Morton. This disc - one of their first solo releases following acclaimed discs with artists such as Alison Balsom and Toby Spence - contrasts Vivaldi's timeless Four Seasons with Piazzolla's tango-inspired The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

Combining Vivaldi and Piazzola together like this underlines the meteorological and cultural differences between Mediterranean Europe and the heart of South America. To have them performed side by side creates a fascinating programme of similarities and contrasts.
