THE HARMONIC - JOBY TALBOT

THE HARMONIC - JOBY TALBOT
ID: SIGCD260
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Tide Harmonic is a new work for small ensemble by the contemporary British composer Joby Talbot. With a compositional aesthetic that threads through his classical and concert works, this disc was born out of a collaboration with choreographer Carolyn Carlson originally entitled Eau. A piece for small ensemble of string quartet, percussion, harp and keyboards (celesta, piano and harmonium), Tide Harmonic is described by its composer as: “… a kind of water symphony that, rather than constructing a poetic or narrative programme inspired by man’s relationship with water, instead focuses on the substance itself, the forces that act upon it, and the energy that flows through and from it”.

F.CHOPIN - C.SAINT-SAËNS: CELLO SONATAS - JAMIE WALTON, cello - DANIEL GRIMWOOD, piano

Two works from very different composers: Chopin’s works for cello were few and far between, but these two straddle his compositional life: the Introduction and Polonaise was written in 1829 when he was just 19, and the cello sonata in (1845-6) is his last work published during his lifetime (all latter works with opus numbers being published posthumously, against his wishes). In contrast, Saint-Saëns published a great many works for the cello (as well as works in almost every genre of the classical canon), with the Cello Sonata No.2 composed during his travels in Biskra, Algeria.

Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood are performers who have proven themselves in both concert and recordings such as these to be formidable and enthralling interpreters of the classical canon. This release follows their previous duo disc of Rachmaninov and Grieg cello sonatas (SIGCD172).

Walton’s Violin Concerto was composed during a trip to Villa Cimbrone in Italy, where he was bitten by a tarantula. This is reflected in the second movement, based on a ‘tarantella’. The piece has endured as one of his most popular works and is contrasted here with Barber’s Violin Concerto and famous Adagio for Strings. Born in Hertfordshire and graduating from the masterclass of Bela Katona at Trinity College of Music in 1982, Thomas Bowes joined the London Philharmonic in 1985 and a year later the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In 1987 he gave his London recital debut and between 1988 and 1992 was the founding leader of the Maggini String Quartet. In 1989 he was invited to become the leader of the London Mozart Players, London’s oldest established chamber orchestra, making his BBC Proms debut with them and Jane Glover in 1991. Still in great demand as a guest leader, Bowes has led many of the UK’s finest orchestras In demand as a guest leader, he has led many of the UK’s finest orchestras - including LSO, Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, SCO and BBC Symphony Orchestra. The Malmö Opera Orchestra and Joseph Swensen join him for this recording. Swensen has served as Principal Conductor of Malmö Opera (Sweden) since 2007 and is Conductor Emeritus of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Henri Joseph De Croes - Concerto for Clarinet & Partias

Henri Joseph De Croes - Concerto for Clarinet & Partias
ID: ACDBH048-2
CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Subcollection: Clarinet

Music by Henri Joseph de Croes has been transcribed by Miel Pieters en played by Vlad Weverbergh accompanied through the "Südwestdeutsche Kammerorchester Pforzheim" and a clarinet/string ensemble for the divertimenti.

Henri Joseph De Croes

In the late 18th century, the Thurn and Taxis family of Regensburg was not only well-placed aristocracy, but also held the monopoly on the post and carriage trade in Europe. Karl Anselm, the fourth sovereign of Thurn and Taxis, was a music lover, and he made his court orchestra into one of the most known in Europe. Thanks to the influence of his famous father, Henri Jacques De Croes, from Antwerp, Henri Joseph De Croes (Brussels 1758 - Regensburg 1842) began to play violin in this orchestra when he was just seventeen years old.

The Regensburg court orchestra played a central role in the development of the clarinet in the second half of the 18th century. The orchestra could count many different talented clarinettists in its midst, as well as other musicians who also played clarinet as their second instrument. The court library's rich collection contains no less than 36 clarinet concerti from the second half of the 18th century, including works by Johann Stamitz, Johann Zach, Theodor Freiherr von Schacht, Vaclav Knežek and Henri Joseph De Croes, among others.

The parthias are stylised pieces for a rather odd ensemble of two clarinets, two violas and contrabass. This instrumentation seems to have been standard at the Regensburg court; there are also parthias by Schacht and Knežek for the same sort of ensemble. A parthia (or 'partita' or 'partia') was originally the name for a solo piece, but German composers later used the term as a synonym for a suite. The parthias by De Croes date from 1780 to 1788 and from 1794. They are light pieces, alternating between andante and menuet with a sometimes surprisingly important part for the contrabass. They are written in an original, refined style and never become banal. Henri Joseph De Croes composed his Clarinet Concerto in Bb Major in 1790, one year before Mozart wrote his own Clarinet Concerto. This work sounds light, frivolous, and relatively undramatic, as well, but the strong melodies and fine orchestration show the hand of a talented composer.

Due to family problems (the death of his two children), political causes (the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the end of the monopoly on the post, and the end of the representative function of the court orchestra) and financial problems, the Henri-Joseph De Croes' oeuvre remained small: just one clarinet concerto, a few symphonies, one ballet, an opera (called The Warlock) and a variety of divertimentos and parthias.

All titles arranged by The London Quartet unless otherwise indicated.
Chris Hatt piano - tracks marked †

Richard Stilgoe - tracks 5, 15 and 19
Eliza Lumley - tracks 9, 10, 16 and 18

Cantabile (also known as ‘The London Quartet’) have been wowing audiences across the world since the 1980s with their shows that blend performance flair, comic timing and a deep passion for high-quality vocal music.
This album is an eclectic tribute to the very British obsession that is cricket, bringing together works from the turn of the century (school songs from Harrow and Eton) to the present day (Jiggery Pokery from the 2009 Ivor Novello nominated album The Duckworth-Lewis Method) - as well as from the well-known (Roy Harper’s When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease) to the obscure (The Summer Game, from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s little-known musical Cricket, commissioned for the Queen’s 60th Birthday). Featuring guest performances from the likes of Richard Stilgoe, Rory Bremner and Tim Rice, this album should prove a must-buy for cricket- and music-fans alike.

Morgan Hayes’ delicate yet manic Violin Concerto forms the centrepiece to this debut release on NMC showcasing his instrumental and ensemble music. Jonathan Harvey - Bird Concerto with Pianosong

Jonathan Harvey - Bird Concerto with Pianosong
ID: NMCD177
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Hideki Nagano, London Sinfonietta, David Atherton, Gareth Hulse, Paul Archibald, Tim Gill, Sound Intermedia

Jonathan Harvey won a Gramophone Award in 2008 for his NMC CD Body Mandala. The works, commissioned by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, explore his fascination with Eastern philosophies.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra celebrates the life and work of Jonathan Harvey in two days of concerts, films and talks at the Barbican, London. Total Immersion runs from the 28-29 January 2012.

Harvey’s Bhakti was the first release on NMC in 1989.

Jonathan was invited by Pierre Boulez to work at IRCAM in the early 1980s.

Bird Concerto - Harvey's hommage to Messiaen - is a celebration of the kind of technical advances in electroacoustics which the creator of Oiseaux exotiques and the Catalogue d’oiseaux was never able to explore. Harvey started writing the piece when he was in California and says that ‘indigo bunting, orchard oriole, golden crowned sparrow ... are some of the forty colourful Californian birds whose songs and cries sparked the ignition of this work’. The bird sounds have been innovatively transformed to create a mesmeric dialogue between nature and art. Harvey sets the piano soloist (the work was commissioned by pianist Joanna MacGregor) the challenge of combining piano playing and triggering a sampler/ synthesizer so that the live electronics can be realised in real-time performance. Other works on this disc are Other Presences, for trumpet and multi-loop effects, and two versions of the canonic Ricercare una melodia (1984) originally written for trumpet and quadraphonic tape-delay system, but here performed on oboe and cello, with live electronics from Sound Intermedia.
