...it's hot, eight o'clock in the evening, i'm tired and thirsty. i've worked enough for today. i take a look at the television programme and the dj line-up for the night scene and decide to let the evening end in a bar. ispruce myself up, leave my apartment and head for the bar area. already from far away i hear the low bass of techno music. my steps quicken, i reach the bar and open the door. thick waves of smoke hit me in the face. it is dim,the glaring lights flicker to the rhythm of the music. i get myself a beer and let myself be dazed by the strong beat of the music and pulled on to the dance floor. a few hours and drinks later i leave the place elated. from far away i still hear the pulse of the music continuing and...

Pintscher, Matthias : En sourdine Tenebrae. Reflections on Narcissus

Pintscher, Matthias : En sourdine Tenebrae. Reflections on Narcissus
ID: KAI0012582

Type: CD

The composer as echo sounder - that is a lovely and perhaps truly appropriate image for Matthias Pintscher’s work of recent years. He has left behind the often cited and well-trod “power of the poetic”, the “imaginary theatre” of the 1990s, and turned to new ways of posing problems, to circles interested in association and inspiration, which is why the introduction of the text appears initially perhaps somewhat idiosyncratic but on second glance is most definitely located at the actual focus of interest. The dark room full of shimmering grey, the gradual groping one’s way, various levels of indeterminacy - Matthias Pintscher’s coordinates are “space” and “colour.” Composing in chromatic values has largely displaced narrative, what was previously applied with a rather forceful stroke, in the new works is noticeably finer, reduced, simplified in the sense that the complex is more transparent, but does not seem less intricate. ...this is the first recording of the recently completed piano piece Serynade, - the special feature: Helmut Lachenmann composed it for Yukiko Sugawara, the performer on this CD - the piano sound is kept alive, worked and shaped, to stop the sound from fading and thus to stop time itself.

Gérard Grisey: Solo Pour Deux / Ernesto Molinari

I - that sacred time:
Cut to pieces by the media, drowned in over-information, measured in this age of zapping and clips, this time, the time which Bataille called ‘sacred’, the time of Art, Love and Creativeness, the instant when something unprecedented happens, can only be preserved by the artist if he completely resists this late 20th century environment. Paradoxically, however, these are precisely the rhythms which feed and inspire him. This is the only world which calls forth his questions. And so, the response to this discontinued flood of information will be a music finding its unity and continuity. Its wintry slowness will be the reversed echo of a stress-ridden world rushing towards its end.
II - Zwitschermaschine:
Think of whales, men and birds. When you hear the songs of the whales, they are so spaced out that what sounds like a gigantic, drawn-out and endless moan is perhaps only one consonant to them. This means that it is impossible to perceive their speech with our constant of time. Similarly, when we hear a bird sing, our impression is that it sounds very high-pitched and agitated. for its constant of time is much shorter than ours. It is difficult for us to perceive its subtle variations of timbre, while it may perceive us, perhaps, as we perceive the whales. (Gérard Grisey)

Shura Cherkassky - The Complete HMV Stereo Recordings

Shura Cherkassky - The Complete HMV Stereo Recordings
ID: FHR04
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Piano

Like many other artists, the great Russian pianist Shura Cherkassky fled from what became Soviet Russia and settled in the USA. A student of Josef Hoffman, Cherkassky is considered by many critics to be the last great Romantic pianist. This release from the brand-new First Hand Records label is published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cherkassky's birth. Most of the tracks here are issued in stereo for the first time and many have never before appeared on CD. This set, which features over two hours of music, is a significant historical classical piano release and provides a major boost to the limited Cherkassky discography currently available.

A 2CD set of Shura Cherkassky's complete and unpublished stereo recordings made for the HMV record label over 50 years ago. Remastered from the original stereo tapes, First Hand Records released the recordings in May 2009, the majority of which have appear for the first time in any format.
Recorded in 1956 & 1958 at Abbey Road Studios, London and remastered there in 2009. The set spans over 400 years of keyboard repertoire, from Bach to Poulenc.

Recorded in Abbey Road Studio No. 3, London, 1956 & 1958, and Kingsway Hall, London, 1958 (Litolff Scherzo)

INTERNATIONAL PIANO MAGAZINE AWARD WINNER FOR BEST REISSUE/VINTAGE RELEASE OF 2009

Issue note:
Throughout his recording career, Cherkassky flirted with different record labels, never really settling with one company. His first recording for an EMI company was in 1929 (HMV) and the last, a recording of the Litolff Scherzo, in 1967 (New World Records). He was wary of the recording studio, feeling happier performing to an audience, which resulted in a comparatively limited discography. Cherkassky was probably at his peak in the mid to late 1950s, just as his career began to accelerate in the UK. These HMV recordings, made in 1956 and 1958, contain some of the earliest EMI stereo recordings, when the technology was still at an experimental stage (EMI introduced twin-track 7.5 ips stereosonic tapes in 1955, followed in 1958 by stereophonic LPs). Quite often, these stereo recordings suffered from technical problems, including equipment failure, which resulted in many recordings not even making it to tape. Some EMI recording sessions from this period were taped in both mono and stereo concurrently, including these Cherkassky recordings. Only the mono versions were intended for immediate release as the equipment for playing stereo LPs was not yet widely available. Indeed, the majority of the tracks on this CD release have only ever been published in their mono versions. The Chopin works, apart from Ballade No. 3, was released on stereosonic tape in 1957 and the Litolff Scherzo appeared in 1963 on a stereo LP entitled “An Evening at the Proms”.

The recordings on this CD issue were made at Abbey Road Studios, London (Litolff Scherzo was recorded in Kingsway Hall, London) and remastered there in 2009 using the original EMI stereo source tapes. These tapes had been left dormant in the EMI archive for over 50 years, alongside masses of other unpublished stereo recordings from this era, which still remain untouched.
The preservation of the piano’s natural acoustic sound was a vital part of the remastering process. With this in mind, we chose not to make an issue of removing the audible hiss that is present on the tapes, to avoid diminishing the acoustic depth and dynamic range of the piano.

Although remembered mainly for his performances of romantic repertoire, Cherkassky had wide-ranging and sometimes idiosyncratic tastes in programming. Alongside standard repertoire, he was also known to perform music by Boulez, Stockhausen, Ligeti and even performed boogie-woogie! This CD release illustrates this diversity of style in a mixture of musical bonbons, warhorses and encore works spanning three centuries. Cherkassky’s trademark lyricism, his exciting unpredictability and his dazzling virtuosity are in abundance throughout this significant historical issue. This is a significant addition to the Cherkassky discography.

WOLFGAG RIHM - Trios 1969-1994

WOLFGAG RIHM - Trios 1969-1994
ID: KAI0012892
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

This CD combines pieces for three instruments, trios - and yet it is very remote from the contemplatively muted frame-work of traditional chamber music. The small group of musicians does not establish intimacy, but causes the gaps, warpings, abysses in Rihm's music to widen even further instead. When the three instrumentalists position themselves as far away from each other in the calm scene "am horizont" (on the horizon), this is only an external sign for the extreme tension that prevails: delicacy of sound and wild noise, falling silent and eloquence, conglomeration and decomposition - accompanied by covert (auto)biographical allusions to Ingeborg Bachman or Karlheinz Stockhausen, Rudi Stephan or Maurizio Kagel.

Si bleu, si calme: The natural cycles of water and air are the underlying ideas of "Si bleu, si calme": condensation and evaporation, winds and currents. "Bleu" (blue) stands for the elements air and water, and "Calme" (calm) refers to space and silence. In musical terms, the complex "Bleu" tends toward development and growing complexity, while "Calme" works on the simplification of intervals and rhythmical figures.

The pieces of this cd are new compositions of Manuel Hidalgo and arrangements of works by Ludwig van Beethoven. Hidalgo was born in Atequera in 1956 and was a student of Helmut Lachenmann.
A glance at his catalogue of works reveals Hidalgo’s intense interest in the “Beethoven the giant,” whose music-alongside that of Mozart-has accompanied him since childhood. His Beethoven arrangements range from the Scherzo of the Symphony No. 9 op. 125 to the Heiliger Dankgesang op. 132 for voices, and from the Introduction and Fugue of the Hammerklavier Sonata op. 106 for accordion and orchestra to the variation movement from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 109. The latest addition to this group of works is the Bagatelles. (Patrick Hahn)

Dufourt’s works typically appear to be something like the slow differentiation of an overarching “structural sound” (Lachenmann), like a “texture which tears apart and grows back together again, albeit with a unified note that prevents the work from disintegrating.” Here, harmonic objects are endlessly weighed, turned over, put under a magnifying glass, stretched, distorted slightly, filtered and rubbed to dust via instrumentation, with the fine line between chord and timbre drifting this way and that.
