Michael Finnissy - Second Third String Quartets - Kreutzer Quartet

Michael Finnissy - Second Third String Quartets - Kreutzer Quartet
ID: NMCD180
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Quartet

Asked to sum up how he would characterize his two String Quartets - written in a neoclassical style and influenced by the sound world of Bruckner and Schoenberg - Michael Finnissy answered, ‘rich and chewy’!
In 2011 Michael Finnissy created a daring new interpretation of Mozart's Requiem. To influence his completion of the parts left missing after the 18th century composer’s death he said "I imagined Mozart in the present day, working to complete the Requiem, looking back across the centuries which have passed since his death. I asked myself what composers, musical genres and historical events would have influenced him since 1791- this helped to shape my work.”
Composer Judith Weir says she regards Finnissy as the most important living British composer.
Despite having no score (the piece is a series of parts, each prefaced by the instruction that it is 'intended that parts should drift slightly apart')
Michael Finnissy's Second Quartet is 'based on a compact Haydn model' - originally intended to be the 'Lark', Op.64, No.5 - and traces of its antecedent can be discerned within it. By contrast, the Third Quartet incorporates actual birdsong, both transcribed and recorded, in the composer's response to the natural world and man's place in it: the instruments gradually fade out, to leave only the sound of birds.

Edward Cowie’s unique compositional voice stems from his wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests in both the sonic and visual arts, with many of his works inspired by ideas and concepts from artworks and from the natural world. The opening piece of this recording - a 2011 commission for BBC Radio 3 - creates a complex musical tapestry and soundscape from the call of the Australian bell-bird, opening with translations of choruses of several species of Australian frogs.

In 2002 Cowie become the BBC Singers’ first ‘Associate Composer’, marking a relationship between the composer that began in the mid-1970s and continues to this day.

Out of Bounds - Michael Eversden, bass trombone

Out of Bounds - Michael Eversden, bass trombone
ID: ACDBR078-2
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Brass

Out of Bounds contains interesting and little known 20th and 21st century music for bass trombone in a chamber music setting. The instrument is rarely heard as the soloist with chamber ensembles and most of the pieces on this disc are rarely performed or have not previously been recorded. The bass trombone can be heard running as a rich thread through the works.
Michael Eversden was born in England and grew up in the rich musical scene of the London Borough of Redbridge. He was a member of the Redbridge and Essex Youth Orchestras and from 1975 to 1978 the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) appearing throughout the UK. Michael studied bass trombone at the Royal College of Music under Gerry McElhone, bass trombonist with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. In 1980 he was appointed as principal bass trombonist with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra (NNO) and has since worked as a freelancer with nearly all the major Dutch and British orchestras. He is a founder member of the Dutch Brass and The Trombonauts (educational concerts for junior school children), teaches at the Gro- ningen College of Music and also composes and arranges music for the bass trombone and other brass.

French Oboe Sonatas - J. Van den Hauwe, oboe - D. Ouziel, piano - E.Boudreault, bassoon

French Oboe Sonatas - J. Van den Hauwe, oboe - D. Ouziel, piano - E.Boudreault, bassoon
ID: ACDBB030-2
CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Subcollection: Oboe

In this album, the Belgian oboist Joris Van den Hauwe performs a number of French compositions for oboe from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This recording includes some of the most important works of French music for oboe and piano. Some were written for student examinations at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Paris. Others were dedicated to former teachers, for example, Camille Saint-Saëns's Sonata to ‘Monsieur Louis Bass, hautbois- Premier Solo de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire et de l'Opera' (tracks 11, 12 and 13). The ‘Sarabande et Allegro' by Gabriel Grovlez (tracks 14 and 15) and the ‘Fantaisie Pastorale' by Eugène Bozza (track 7) were both dedicated to the then highly acclaimed oboist Louis Bleuzet (1874-1941), also a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Grovlez noted in his score: ‘A mon Ami Louis Bleuzet, Professeur au Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris'. The link between composers and performers was apparently very strong; these works are among the jewels of chamber music.
The oboe sonata (1947) by Henri Dutillieux (tracks 4, 5 and 6) is a jewel, as well, though the composer, born in 1916, thought otherwise. He disavowed this composition, along with other early works. Dutillieux dedicated this sonata to Monsieur Pierre Bayeux, also a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Francis Poulenc dedicated his two sonatas on this album (tracks 1, 2 and 3 and 16, 17 and 18) to Sergei Prokofiev and Manuel de Falla. It is a conscious departure from a program following a timeline of the dates of the compositions. The reason for this is to present the music on the album as though in a concert, in a musical progression. The album begins, for example, with the most recent work.
