Joseph Haydn - String Quartets Op. 33 - Quatuor Terpsycordes

Joseph Haydn - String Quartets Op. 33 - Quatuor Terpsycordes
ID: CLAVES502608
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Quartet

Following the overwhelming success of their first recording of Schumann’s quartets (Claves CD 50-2404), which was greeted by widespread and (nearly) unanimous praise, the Terpsycordes Quartet (winners of the prestigious international competition in Geneva in 2002) now sets off on a journey entitled Joseph Haydn and his Opus 33. The recording features three from the set of six quartets (including the second quartet, “The Joke”) that the composer wrote in Esterhaza at the beginning of the 1780’s, here on gut strings with classic bows. Moreover, the quartet performs on four magnificent instruments made by Jean-Baptiste and Nicolas-François Vuillaume and placed at their disposal by the Geneva Museum of Art and History, contributing to very warm and homogeneous sonorities. And there are whispers in the halls at Claves that the four young Swiss musicians are already preparing their bows for an encounter with Schubert’s two magnificent quartets, “Rosamunde” and “Death and the Maiden”...

Gregorio Zanon : The compelling need to express
Since its founding toward the end of the 1960’s, Claves has always placed special importance on finding and promoting young, talented artists. Pianists, violinists, flutists… and now, something unusual? A young composer from the Canton of Vaud, not shaped by the rules of a particular school but by the magic of his own passions. Gregorio Zanon composes like he breathes: with his stomach, his heart and that sense of urgency that makes art come vibrantly to life. He doesn’t have a choice; the notes that he brings to paper amass with the sole desire to express… an emotion, a question, a doubt, a desire… Gregorio Zanon does not write music with the intention of earning a place in posterity, and it is for reason of the integrity of his music that Claves has chosen to feature his works on a CD, brought to life by our “in-house” artists the Terpsycordes Quartet (this is already the ensemble’s third recording for the Swiss classical label) and Mark Drobinksy, cello, Jocelyne Rudasigwa, double bass (with Boulouris 5) and pianist Xavier Dami. A recording to discover!

It is said that no one was her equal with Mozart; he was her composer of choice. And she is the “God mother” of Claves Records. What more natural (especially after the immense success of the Schumann/Beethoven recording with Ansermet released in 2004, Claves CD 50-2408) than to explore the archives of Radio Suisse Romande where a number of treasures bearing her mark still lie dormant. We were fortunate to find these remarkable performances of Mozart’s 19th and 24th Piano Concertos, immortal recordings made in the 50’s with Victor Desarzens at the head of his Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. The voyage continues…

BRAHMS - Causa - Pantillon - The 2 Viola Sonatas - Lieder for Viola and Piano

BRAHMS - Causa - Pantillon - The 2 Viola Sonatas - Lieder for Viola and Piano
ID: CLAVES502802
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

His first recording for Claves was a hit in 2006. Featuring transcriptions of romantic works (CD 50-2609), its success immediately cried out for a follow-up with a “weightier” repertoire. The choice of Brahms’ two sonatas was in a sense self-evident. As was the choice of the pianist. Who better suited to accompany Ettore Causa on his skyrocketing path than the Brahms specialist at Claves - Marc Pantillon! Author in 2005 of a solo recording featuring Brahms (CD 50-2508) - a recording which truly deserves greater recognition - the pianist from Neuchâtel immediately succumbed to the charm of Ettore Causa’s viola playing. A truly “Claves” encounter! And included in the bargain, opening the recording, six Lieder by Brahms in arrangements by Causa himself: to be enjoyed without moderation!

Vieuxtemps - Wieniawski - Violin Concertos - Hannu Lintu - Corey Cerovsek

Vieuxtemps - Wieniawski - Violin Concertos - Hannu Lintu - Corey Cerovsek
ID: CLAVES502801
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

Following his exquisite recording of Beethoven’s sonatas for violin and piano encased in a luxurious box (Claves CD 50-2610/12) and crowned with the prestigious “MIDEM Classical Award” at the beginning of 2008, Canadian violinist Corey Cerovsek will release a new album this fall that is sure to set a new milestone: concertos by 19th century violin virtuosos Henri Vieuxtemps and Henryk Wieniawski. Accompanied by Hannu Lintu and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, his stunning performances on his magnificent “Milanollo” Stradivarius of Vieuxtemps’ Fifth Concerto and Wieniawski’s Second Concerto are matched by a recording of a work rarely heard: Wieniawski’s Fantaisie brillante on themes from Gound’s “Faust”. The in-depth liner notes were written by eminent French musicologist Jean-Michel Molkhou. This recording was made possible by the generous support of Pictet & Cie Private Bankers in Geneva, who also participated generously in the production of the Beethoven box.

Trio Nota Bene - Rachmaninov - Trio No.1 - Arensky - Shostakovich - Trio No.2

Trio Nota Bene - Rachmaninov - Trio No.1 - Arensky - Shostakovich - Trio No.2
ID: CLAVES502720
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Trio

The Trio Nota Bene, although young, already has an impressive list of accomplishments to their name. The musicians earned their diplomas in Patrick Genet’s (first violinist of the Sine Nomine Quartet) class at the Lausanne Conservatory; the musicians also worked closely with the celebrated Trio Wanderer in Paris, who praise their “astonishing musical maturity”. The ensemble also has profited from valuable council from musicians such as Menahem Pressler of the Beaux-Arts Trio or Shmuel Ashkenasi of the Vermeer Quartet. Following their participation together with other musicians in a recording dedicated to the music of Swiss composer Jean Daetwyler for VDE-Gallo, Lioenl Monnet (piano), Julien Zufferey (violin) and Xavier Pignat (cello) make their “official” recording debut with this CD featuring Russian music, a juxtaposition of the late romanticism of Rachmaninov and Arensky with Shostakovich’s 20th century “revolutionary” style. A real revelation!
