Alexandra Soumm - Bruch - Paganini - Violin Concertos No. 1: virtuoso debut with orchestra

Alexandra Soumm - Bruch - Paganini - Violin Concertos No. 1: virtuoso debut with orchestra
ID: CLAVES502808
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

Like violinist Liviu Prunaru, singer Herman Wallén, harpist Emmanuel Ceysson and pianist Joseph Moog before her, French violinist Alexandra Soumm was selected from a group of young soloists present at the Sommets Musicaux Festival in Gstaad in 2007 to make a recording with orchestra financed by the principal sponsor, Edmond de Rothschild Private Bank. A student of the great Boris Kuschnir and already well-established in an international career, this brilliant artist (not yet twenty - she will celebrate this birthday in 2009) chose two virtuoso concertos from the 19th century for her first major recording: Niccolò Paganini’s First Violin Concerto and Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. An extremely auspicious visiting card, the recording was made with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under the direction of Austrian conductor Georg Mark. It is also a fitting homage to the founder of Claves Records, Marguerite Dütschler-Huber, who also initiated this adventure, which since her death in June 2006 bears the name “Prix Marguerite Dütschler”.

Bohuslav Martinu - The 3 Sonatas For Cello & Piano - Mattia Zappa - Massimiliano Manolfi

Bohuslav Martinu - The 3 Sonatas For Cello & Piano - Mattia Zappa - Massimiliano Manolfi
ID: CLAVES502803
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Piano and Cello

Although he did not play the instrument himself, Bohuslav Martinu was particularly fond of the cello, and this affinity is reflected in his music. In particular, he wrote three sonatas for the instrument over the space of some fifteen years, years marked by great political tensions and upheavals. The first sonata was composed in Paris in 1940 and was a reaction to the Munich Agreement, deplored by all Czechoslovakians. The second sonata was one of the first works that Martinu wrote during his exile in America. And the third was written in Washington in 1953, first spawned during his vacation in Vieux Moulin, France in the summer of 1952. The passions and torments of this history captivated the Zappa - Mainolfi Duo. Their dazzling performance of these sonatas, a coproduction with DeutschlandRadioBerlin, marks their debut with Claves.

Mendelssohn - Piano Concertos Op. 25 & Op. 40 - Chamber Version - Fumiko Shiraga

Mendelssohn - Piano Concertos Op. 25 & Op. 40 - Chamber Version - Fumiko Shiraga

Subcollection: Quartet

The Japanese pianist Fumiko Shiraga has made a specialty in recent years of performing famous concertos with a small group of instrumentalists. She calls this project “concertos in disguise.” “It was common in the 19th century to present concert performances of large-scale works in a scaled-down version,” she explains. “There were many fewer orchestras then on the musical scene than there are today, and so one had recourse to the musicians that were available and adapted the music according to the instrumentarium.” Beyond such practical considerations, these arrangements can be appreciated on a purely artistic level. To Fumiko Shiraga’s mind, small formations offer many advantages. “When one plays with an orchestra, the result depends in large part on the conductor, on his or her ideas and ability to enter into the world of the soloist. With a small ensemble it is quite different - one is flexible, reactive. One reaches the limits of fortissimo much more quickly, and thus the piano has much wider expressive possibilities, particularly in the intimist register.” For her first recording for Claves, she has chosen Felix Mendelssohn’s concertos Opus 25 and Opus 40, arranged by Cord Garben for piano and string quintet. Plus: six Romances without Words delicately arranged for piano, violin, and cello. Chamber music on symphonic or soloist notes - a rediscovery!

Mozart - The Oboe in Mozart Chamber Music

Mozart - The Oboe in Mozart Chamber Music
ID: CC2007
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Oboe

The CD booklet contains a 2,000-word essay by Diana Ambache on the music in the CD in English, Italian and German. The photos include more from the K452 recording session and two entries from Mozart's Catalogue written in his own hand.

Human feeling is always at the centre of Mozart's music, and the collection of oboe works here illustrates this with colour and variety. As ever, Mozart excpresses everything from exuberant joy to deep melancholy, with a profound understanding of the expression of emotion. His paradoxes intrigue us; his humour entertains us; he seduces us with his beauty -and the oboe is an excellent vehicle for all this. The five works on the CD include three originally written for the oboe and two fine adaptations.

The year 1781 was an eventful one for Mozart. As well as having the première of 'Idomineo' on his 25th birthday, he also wrote the Oboe Quartet and Sonata featured here, as well as the Concerto for Two Pianos, K365. In May he had the now famous row with his patron Archbishop Collerado, which resulted in his move to Vienna and a new life as a freelance musician.
