Performed for the first time in Ferrara on the 8th of November 1676, and again in 1682 in Bologna on the 2nd of November, "La tromba della divina misericordia", was Bassani's third oratory (the others being "L'Esaltazione di Santa Croce" and "L'epulone"), but this one is the only one of the three for which an original score exists. Therefore it represents his oldest surviving composition, especially given the fact that his first opus was published only in the following year.
The work was commissioned by the Accademia della Morte in Ferrara (where Bassani, who was born in Padua, resided from at least 1667 on). This organization was part of the brotherhood of the same name, one of the city's most prominent religious institutions. From this perspective, "La tromba" represents an example of an oratorio morale, very different from those oratories widely diffused in courts of the time. In fact, here the term "oratorio" indicates an opera with a biblically inspired - or hagiographic - libretto, and it was a common substitute of melodramas during Lent or other periods when theaters were closed. (Carlo Centemeri). This recording would like to contribute to the rediscover of such a composer, Bassani, who is today above all remembered for his Trio sonatas (one of which is here recorded together with a Toccata for Organ), but who was a celebrated violinist and composer in his own time. (Bach himself knew Bassani's Acroama missale, which consisted of six Masses).

Pavel Zemek Novák - 24 PRELUDES FUGUES - William Howard, piano

Pavel Zemek Novák - 24 PRELUDES FUGUES - William Howard, piano
ID: CHRCD016
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: World Premiere Recording

Novák’s music is intensely spiritual, and is truly modern in that it adds something completely new to what has existed before. At the same time it is not overtly radical; it does not seek to destroy the existing order and replace it with something new.

Novák retains strong links with tonality, but his tonality, with its frequent use of triads, sounds uniquely his.

The 24 Preludes and Fugues were written for the pianist William Howard over a 17-year period, and consequently reflect the evolution of Novák’s musical language during this time. Many of them were premiered at the Dartington International Summer School.

This 75-minute work is divided into four ʻbooksʼ, the first two based on the Old Testament and the second two on the New Testament. Whereas the pieces in the first two books are distinct and individual, the cycle strives increasingly towards a unity of form as it develops, while at the same time revealing Novák’s growing interest in unison and a consonance in his compositional language.

“I have no doubt that these 24 Preludes and Fugues are one of the finest piano works of our time...” David Matthews

Pavel Zemek Novák was born in Brno in 1957, and is one of the most individual and distinctive Czech composers of his generation. His large body of symphonic, choral, chamber and instrumental works reflects both his devout religious faith and his interest in Morovian folk traditions. William Howard, performing in this world premiere recording, is established as one of Britain’s leading pianists, enjoying a career that has taken him to over 40 different countries, and has seen him perform on over 30 CDs. He has a very strong interest in Czech piano music, recognised by a medal awarded by the Czech Minister of Culture in 1986.

O Radiant Dawn
Videns Dominus
Lux aeterna
In splendoribus sanctorum
Benedicimus Deum caeli
O bone Jesu
Tenebrae Responsories

Continuing their work with Scotland’s most prominent living composer, James MacMillan, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen will release the premiere recording of his exquisite new work Miserere for the CORO label in November.
The Sixteen’s UK premiere of the Miserere at the 2010 Spitalfields Festival won both public and critical acclaim.
Based on Psalm 51, the Miserere mei has been set to music many times over the centuries but few composers have tackled the complete text. Allegri was one such composer, whose reputation rests on that single work. CORO is delighted to release the first recording of James MacMillan’s 21st-century take on the text.
The group is renowned for its work with the Scottish composer, and his O bone Jesu - a piece composed especially for The Sixteen and written in emulation of his countryman Robert Carver’s 19-voice O bone Jesu - was part of the ensemble’s 2002 and 2009 Choral Pilgrimage tours and features on this new CD.
The disc also contains a selection of The Strathclyde Motets and the Tenebrae Responsories.

Recorded 18 January 2007 (Matthews), 21 and 22 June 2007 (Eggert); 18 and 19 September 2007 (Verbeij and Glanert) all at Concertgebouw Amsterdam

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is famous throughout the world for its interpretations of works in the Classical symphonic repertoire. But, as with its legendary performances of the works of Mahler and Strauss at the beginning of the 20th-century, the orchestra is also open to new developments in contemporary music. Exploring new horizons and sound spaces, the orchestra continues to foster relationships with contemporary composers employing unconventional working methods. Compositions by Theo Verbey, Moritz Eggert, Colin Matthews and Detlev Glanert, the first three having been written specially for the RCO, attest to the orchestra's unrivalled sound inspire tour-de-force performances by the musicians.
A supporter and enthusiastic advocate of such orchestral exploits, conductor Markus Stenz leaves his own unmistakable stamp on these live recordings. Jörgen van Rijen was featured in One to Watch in Gramophone, May issue.A Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award winner, the Verbeij concerto was commisioned by the RCO for him, the youngest member when he joined as principal trombone in 1997.

Horizon 3 - Recordings from the 2008-2009 season

Horizon 3 - Recordings from the 2008-2009 season
ID: RCO10003
CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Collection: World Premiere Recording

Recorded Live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 19, 20 March 2009 (Van der Aa); 22, 23 January 2009 (Ketting); 10, 11 October 2008 (Keuris, Gubaidulina, Nas).

With this third release in the Horizon series, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra once again underlines the importance it attaches in its concert programming to performances of contemporary music. The compositions featured on this CD represent a selection of recordings of contemporary works which the orchestra premiered in its 2008-9 season (some of which were commissioned by the orchestra) or of which few or no quality recordings are available. Two Dutch composers of the latest generation (Nas and van der Aa) are brought together here with two members of the older guard (Ketting and Keuris). Sofia Gubaidulina, for her part, represents the international contingent on this CD. In its performance of these works, the orchestra was led by conductors Ed Spanjaard, Markus Stenz and David Robertson. The CD also features soloist mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn, to whom van der Aa dedicated his song cycle.
