Collection: World Premiere Recording Subcollection: Orchestra In modern reference works, Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka appears only as a sort of footnote: in description of the German musical scene and the conservatory situation in the second half of the 19th century, or when discussing his rather more famous brother Xaver. Nowadays Scharwenka is almost deleted from concert programs During the composers lifetime the situation was different. He and his younger brother were eminent figures in the musical landscape of the so-called imperial Germany. They exercised a determined influence on musical education of the period, their works were highly valued and performed by musicians of the highest calibre. |

Subcollection: Traditional The music of Christopher Ball has been welcomed as being the continuing traditional English style of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Finzi but with its own individual voice and orchestral sound. The Violin Concerto clearly displays these characteristics of mood and melody with its range of emotions from the poetic to the passionate. The two orchestral items: Celtic Twilight and From the Hebrides reveal a strong Celtic influence and the ability to produce a stream of memorable melody. The 5 Bagatelles for wind trio are in a contrasting style described by MusicWeb International as ‘affable and swaggeringly cheery music… witty and utterly attractive’. |

Subcollection: Piano By the time Joachim Raff began composing works for solo instruments and orchestra, he had been in Franz Liszt’s inner circle for several years as a full participants in the Weimar avant-garde. Having been intimately involved in the creation and orchestration of the earliest versions of at least two of Liszt’s three formally-named piano concerti, it is not surprising therefore, that Raff’s own first concerto followed, in a general sort of way, Liszt’s model of interconnected, thematically related movements. |
