David Wilde plays Schumann

David Wilde plays Schumann
ID: DCD34050
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection: Instrumental
Subcollection: Piano

The original first-movement manuscript of Schumann's Fantasie in C has a number of differences from the editions commonly used today - significant tempo and textual changes which David Wilde has reinstated in a revelatory reading of this tumultuous love-poem to the young Clara. In contrast, Kinderszenen, a touching and vernal evocation of childhood, is given a performance of artless innocence that chimes with Wilde's conviction that ‘it shouldn't sound mature'. Carnaval's colourful cast of characters is viscerally and imaginatively brought to life, culminating in Wilde's fearsome ‘March against the Philistines'.

A veteran of the Romantic piano tradition, David Wilde brings six decades of intense experience to this recital. His playing harks back to a time when audiences expected much more from the performer. This is Schumann with personality - listeners searching for a ‘safe' experience will be disappointed.

Firma Melodiya presents a premiere of a unique work of 20th century Russian music - 24 Preludes and Fugues by Vsevolod Zaderatsky.
To say that the composer’s fate was tragic means to say nothing. A composer, pianist and conductor, Zaderatsky went through all circles of Soviet hell - arrests, imprisonments, Gulag, exiles, persecution for “formalism”… However, nothing could crush the man’s mighty craving for creation. He wrote his main work in the period of 1937 to 1939 in a prison camp in Kolyma using telegraph forms as music paper…
A representative of Taneyev’s school, Zaderatsky was perhaps the only composer who ventured upon continuation of his teacher’s polyphonic tradition. Zaderatsky revived Bach’s tradition on his own even before Hindemith and Shostakovich created their cycles of the kind. Here, the timehonoured form is combined with a quite peculiar interpretation of “tonal” thinking. At the same time, the composer’s style is a synthesis of the most significant achievements in the music of the first half of the last century.
Vsevolod Zaderatsky’s works began to draw attention of musicians and the public as late as in the 21st century. The 24 Preludes and Fugues were performed entirely for the first time in 2014 in Moscow. Now they have been put on record by a group of young pianists, prize-winners of international competitions and prominent representatives of performing art of their generation. We are pleased to present Ksenia Bashmet, Yuri Favorin, Nikita Mndoyants, Lukas Geniušas, Andrei Gugnin and Andrei Yaroshinsky.

It contains famous works, like the first Brahms concerto with Sixten Ehrling as conductor (performance highly praised by Ehrling and first class performances of the Schumann, concerto and the Franck, Symphonic Variations. His rendering of the Schumann concerto belongs to the legato school with more emphasis on detail than on exuberance.

Golden Guitar as the Best Guitar CD of the year 2003
Guitar 'Luciano Lovadina', 1987

This is the first worldpremiere for modern complete works of the famous Spanish guitarist Francisco Tarrega by an Italian Artist, Giulio Tampalini who won several prestigious awards. In the history of the guitar, Francisco Tárrega, both the man and his work, are part of that period when the instrument was in decline (late romanticism)and yet, he is surrounded by a mythology that has transformed him into the symbol of the renaissance of the guitar. Unfortunately, he did not live to see this rebirth. He was born in Vilareal de los Infantes, in the Valencia region of Spain. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Tárrega was little more than an amateur, self-taught guitarist, even though his exceptional capabilities were clearly evident and hinted at the musician he would become. In his early youth, he enrolled in the Conservatory of Madrid, taking classes in piano and solfeggio and despite its coming a bit late in his education, this instruction opened his musical horizons, feeding his fertile and instinctive musicality and rather than estranging him from the guitar as it could have, it was during this period that his calling as a guitarist manifested itself fully.
