The role Mauro Giuliani played as a guitar virtuoso, as well as composer and transcriber of the themes mostly appreciated by his audience, brought him to become the main Artist in the Vienna music world at the beginning of the 19th century and let him become the symbol of a radiant and dazzling Italian-ness.
The collection of the six Rossini pieces is a faithful representation of the composer's style and an example of his search for instrumental technique and timbre of the highest order. The six Rossini works are built following a potpourri logic as far as combining operatic themes are concerned and illustrate both a composing style that was in fashion in Vienna at the beginning of the 1800's and the ability of one of the most important talents ever in the history of the guitar to express himself.
Different considerations must be made on the cycles of variations, among which the Opera no. 45 included in this cd, concerning Haendel's well known theme as Follia di Spagna and Opera 107. Herein Giuliani is showing very well his capabilities as a genuine and creative composer. He makes a deep analysis of the theme's latent expressive content to obtain a variation in style in accordance with creative ideas.

Firma Melodiya presents an album of the remarkable Russian pianist Dmitri Bashkirov.

“Bashkirov moved from Tbilisi to Moscow in the 1950s to study at the conservatory, and his first performance caused a real sensation”, remembered the prominent organist Harry Grodberg. After he graduated the Moscow Conservatory and completed his postgraduate course under Alexander Goldenweiser, Bashkirov received the first prize of the Long-Thibault International Competition in Paris. The piano school of Heinrich Neuhaus had an unconditional influence on the young pianist.

“This is a romantic pianist … of modern formation.

Both dreaminess and tenderness are characteristic of him. But what he has on the foreground when he plays is intensity of feeling”, wrote one of the music critics about Dmitri Bashkirov. Combining impeccable technical virtuosity with emotional depth, brilliant artistry with the skill of a dramatist performer, he mastered an extensive concert repertoire and spent a lot of time in studio as well recording for Melodiya and later for the biggest European labels. Bashkirov played music of the romantic composers and French impressionists with particular inspiration, but his interpretations of Prokofiev were also especially impressive, and the classical harmonies of Haydn and Mozart were followed by sonorous energy of Rachmaninoff and sharp distinctness of Shchedrin.

The album includes recordings of works of Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt, Grieg, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Shchedrin made by Dmitri Bashkirov in 1957 to 1972.

In 2010 the world celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Polish composer of genius Frйdйric Chopin (1810-1849). This romantic composer was a genuine poet of grand piano. He composed neither symphonies nor operas - his whole creative life was dedicated to piano works. Chopin considered this instrument ideal for expressing feelings and ideas; his nocturnes, waltzes, ballads, mazurkas, polonaises, etudes and scherzos are the recognized masterpieces of piano art.

“To understand Chopin one must know that the composer was a pupil of Bach and Mozart, a pupil of accuracy and harmony. This is a noble genius. Chopin’s Rubato originates from Italian singing: the composer regularly visited the Italian opera studying the singers’ art. Take into account the singer’s breath, expressiveness of the arias and recitatives, singing for the good of the soul - and there appears the proper degree of freedom, not imposed one but following from the sense of melody…” - said one of the best interpreters of Chopin’s music, legendary Polish pianist Arthur Rubinstein. It was performance of Chopin’s works that brought him fame and is still considered to be a world standard.
