Collection: Baroque The first volume of this set featuring the complete lute sonatas by Silvius Leopold Weiss, which was released by Claves in 2006, was crowned with a number of awards including a magnificent Diapason d’or. Two years later Japanese lute player Yasunori Imamura, who now resides in Switzerland, is back with the second volume dedicated to the Baroque master admired by Bach himself. Imamura, a musician with vast experience (a soloist and continuo player in demand by the greats: Les Musiciens du Louvre, Cecilia Bartoli, Gérard Lesne, Teresa Berganza…) and numerous recordings (more than 100) to his name, has hit the mark again with his unique manner of interpreting Weiss’ music, dignified and whimsical at the same time. |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano and Clarinet He is one of the most promising clarinetists of his generation. Born into a Swiss family of folk musicians in Zug in 1975, he studied with François Benda at the Academy of Music in Basel and then with Charles Neidich at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. But it was the chamber music courses in Basel with composer György Kurtág and pianist Krystian Zimerman that truly left a mark on him. Reto Bieri does not like crowds and does not believe in mass movements: he feels genuinely alive in the intimacy of a dialogue. And he shares a particularly close bond with Schubert, a serendipitous communion. “I know that millions of people have heard his music before me, but I nonetheless have the feeling of being the only one to know certain details about him, certain facets of his musical personality.” Originally written for violin and piano, the three sonatas recorded on his debut album for Claves are accompanied by a recording of ten German Dances (in his own transcriptions) and the celebrated “Ständchen” from Schubert’s Schwanengesang. He is joined in this magnificent laudation of human fragility by a poet on the piano: Gérard Wyss. |

Subcollection: Clarinet The Basset Horn is essentially the tenor member in the large clarinet family. It is pitched in F and has four extra semitones below the equivalent clarinet range thus giving the instrument its 'basset' or 'little bass' character. It is distinguished from the clarinet by its soft uniquely dark and velvety timbre.
From the evidence of the accounts of the many virtuosi who traveled throughout Europe at this time it is clear that the instrument had a role very much on a par with the clarinet.
The Swiss Clarinet Players with the support of clarinetist Thomas Friedli present a selection of works from the golden age of the basset horn.
