The Organ of Buckingham Palace Ballroom - Joseph Nolan

The Organ of Buckingham Palace Ballroom - Joseph Nolan
ID: SIGCD114
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

Following the success of Joseph Nolan’s appearance in Music for the Coronation of James II (SIGCD094), he returns to Signum with a solo disc of organ music, capturing music from some of the finest composers of the instrument. With J.S. Bach’s famous Passacaglia in C Minor to Noel Rawsthorne’s Dance Suite, (with inspiration from Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance) this disc certainly pushes the boundaries of organ music.

Fresh from a tour of the USA in 2007, Nolan has found international recognition as well as his commitments as organist at Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal where he was appointed in 2004.

Naji Hakim - Plays the organ of Glenalmond College

Naji Hakim - Plays the organ of Glenalmond College
ID: SIGCD130
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

The World Premier recording of two of Naji Hakim’s late st works entitled Sakskøbing Præludier and Glenalmond Suite are performed by the composer himself in this fantastic collection of organ works.

Hakim arranged this programme to articulate the timbres of the new 26 stop organ at Glenalmond College, including works by Grigny, Boëllmann and Franck as well as opening with Te Deum, one of the most famous pieces by Jean Langlais.

Artist Note:
I chose the repertoire for the opening recital of the Glenalmond College instrument having in mind the stylistic flexibility and great elegance of Harrison & Harrison organs. As 2007 was the centenary year of my master and friend Jean Langlais, I decided to open the programme with one of his most famous pieces - Te Deum - on the Tutti of the organ, followed by works of Grigny, Boëllmann and Franck, articulating the programme to put in relief the colours of the instrument, such as mutations, flutes, voix céleste, foundations and reeds. The Sakskøbing Præludier, based on Danish hymns, are the prolongation of my credo, and, along with the Glenalmond Suite, are recorded here for the very first time.

Naji Hakim returns to Signum with this collection of his own works for organ.

As both an organist and a composer, Lebanese-born Naji Hakim has distinguished himself as one of the most active artists of his generation. A virtuosic performer, who succeeded Olivier Messiaen as organist at l'église de la Trinité in Paris, many of his works draw on his own Christian beliefs (in 2007 he was honoured with a Papal award for his services to the church). The works are recorded on the new van den Heuvel organ of the Danish Radio Concert Hall, Copenhagen (opened in 2009).

Praise for Naji's last disc on Signum (The Organ of Glenalmond College, SIGCD130):
“For all that one is used to Hakimʼs coruscating brilliance, the sheer technical skill and white-hot intensity of the Hakim imagination in blending these dirge-like themes into music left this Scotsman duly open mouthed.”
Grame Kay, Choir & Organ Magazine, December 2008

Naji Hakim and Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet (organ)

Naji Hakim returns to disc on Signum with a new and powerful collection of his own organ works. Hakim is joined by Marie-Bernadette Dufource for the central piece of the programme, a set of meditation for two organists inspired by Lucas Cranach the Elder's woodcuts of the Apostles.
Completed in 2000, the Schuke Organ of the Palacio Euskalduna is housed in a magnificent concert hall of wood and steel - itself inspired by the Euskulduna shipyards that once occupied the area. A modern instrument, it is well-suited to the nuanced voicings of modern organ compositions, as a well as being sympathetic and adaptable to the great works of the past.

Ravi Shankar, the legendary sitarist and composer is India's most esteemed musical Ambassador and a singular phenomenon in the classical music worlds of East and West. As a performer, composer, teacher and writer, he has done more for Indian music than any other musician. He is well known for his pioneering work in bringing Indian music to the West. This however, he did only after long years of dedicated study under his illustrious guru Baba Allaudin Khan and after making a name for himself in India.

Always ahead of his time, Ravi Shankar has written two concertos for sitar and orchestra, violin-sitar compositions for Yehudi Menuhin and himself, music for flute virtuoso Jean Pierre Rampal, music for Hosan Yamamoto, master of the Shakuhachi and Musumi Miyashita - Koto virtuoso, and collaborated with Phillip Glass (Passages). George Harrison produced and participated in two record albums, "Shankar Family & Friends" and "Festival of India" composed by Ravi Shankar. He has composed extensively for films and Ballets in India, Canada, Europe and the United States, including Charly, Gandhi and Apu Trilogy. Ravi Shankar is an honourary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and is a member of the United Nations International Rostrum of composers. He has received many awards and honours from his own country and from all over the world, including fourteen doctorates, the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan, Desikottam, the Magsaysay Award from Manila, two Grammy's, the Fukuoka grand Prize from Japan, the Crystal award from Davos, with the title 'Global Ambassador' to name some. In 1986 he was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha, India's upper house of Parliament. His recording "Tana Mana", released on the private Music label in 1987, brought Mr. Shankar's music into the "New age" with its unique method of combining traditional instruments with electronics.

In the period of the awakening of the younger generation in the mid 60's, Ravi Shankar gave three memorable concerts - Monterey Pop Festival, Concert for Bangla Desh and The Woodstock Festival. Mr. Shankar has several disciples and many of them are now very succesful concert artists and composers.

The love and respect he commands both in India and in the West is unique in the annals of the history of music. In 1989, this remarkable musician celebrated his 50th year of concertising, and the city of Birmingham Touring Opera Company commissioned him to do a Music Theatre (Ghanashyam - a broken branch) which created history on the British arts scene.

Perhaps no greater tribute can be paid to this genius than the words of his colleagues:

"Ravi Shankar has brought me a precious gift and through him I have added a new dimension to my experience of music. To me, his genius and his humanity can only be compared to that of MOZART'S."
- Yehudi Menuhin
