While 19th century Western Europe music includes different styles and schools, there is no such division among Russian composers. During that time Russia marks a period of real national upsurge in enhancing the Russian nation. For this reason, the Russian composers turn back to the traditional village folklore and consider it basic for the future development of Russian musical culture. Glinka was the first to look back to the Russian musical heritage. His works provide a basis for the Russian classical music school. The realistic traditions in his music are followed also by the next generation of composers.
At the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s a group of composers (Balakirev, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui) created the group “The Five”, dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian brand of music and truthful representation of real life. They follow the path of Glinka and Dargomizhsky in creating works which are closely connected to folk art. However, they also stand out with their brilliant artistic talent and the innovations they made in opera, symphonic and chamber music. Tchaikovsky also shares their outlook. He often uses Russian folklore, but is interested mainly in the inner life of man, and not in large-scale historical dramas. In this sense, his music is more closely related to everyday romance, than to the traditional folklore. Tchaikovsky also creates a new type of ballet music. Music had mainly accompaniment functions before him. He makes it stand on its own in the whole performance. By employing the expressive means of symphonic music, the composer reveals the dramatic content of the work.
20th century composers are also influenced by their predecessors. They develop the folk traditions and enrich them with the expressive means of their time.

Theodosii Spassov, “the best kaval on the planet”, presents yet another original programme (so far Gega New has released five of his albums). In this CD the pieces were recorded together with the Big Band of the Bulgarian National Radio. Against the background of the orchestra sound, the release also includes two works for piano and kaval. Theodosii Spassov is the first Bulgarian musician who successfully synthesizes Bulgarian folk music with other genres, mostly jazz. His first attempts were in his student years, and his project with Milcho Leviev (1990) leads him to the world stage. This is followed by his concerts with Albert Mangelsdorf, with the percussionist from India Trilok Gurtu, the ethno-jazz stars Rabih Abou-Khalil and Glen Velez, the Canadian singer Kareen Young, Andy Sheppard, Mark Johnson, the Greek musicians Dionisis Savopulos, Kostas Theodorou, the world- famous Riverdance formation... Theodosii Spassov has played with almost all Bulgarian jazz musicians. Recently, he has cooperated with colleagues from the Balkan countries. Together they have launched two projects - “Balkan Horses” and “Balkan Winds. His music has been warmly applauded in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, Greece, Holland, India, Israel, Japan, Nepal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the U.K., the USA and many more countries.

The premiere performance of Symphony No. 1 took place on November 20th, 1889 in Budapest, conducted by the author himself. Almost 120 years after the premiere, Njagul Tumangelov accomplished the recording of this massive work.
Being the son of the famous composer, choir conductor and music pedagogue Dragia Tumangelov, he naturally chose music as his career. Njagul Tumangelov received his music education at the Music School for Gifted Children in Sofia and then went on to study at the State Academy of Music - Sofia, in the class of Professor Boyan Lechev. In 1962 he became the principal concertmaster of Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1969 he received the position of principal concertmaster of the Austrian Radio and Television, and later - the Bavarian Radio and Television. He is a founder and primarius of the Austrian Radio and Television string quartet. It was by accident that he launched on his career as a conductor - the conductor of Il barbiere di Siviglia by Paisiello in the chamber opera in Vienna was suddenly taken ill and Mr. Tumangelov took his place and conducted the performance. Since then he has been successfully working both as a violin player and a conductor.
In 2000 Gega New released a CD with three sonatas for violin and piano by Villa-Lobos, recorded by Njagul Tumangelov - violin, and Bojidar Noev - piano (GD 224). Now, 8 years later, his admirers will be able to appreciate his talent as a conductor.
