If you respond to the chamber music of Bartók and his followers like Ligeti and Veress, you shold seek this out. Emil Petrovics is the genuine article: a composer whose music is etched with fire on the silence around us.

József Sári is one of Hungary's most significant composers. It was in quiet seclusion and by going his own way that he developed his style, which has close links to the great musical traditions of Europe and yet remains encaptivatingly original. I feel great respect for him as the sort of musician-phenomenon who might have been characteristic of the Middle Ages.

The duration of life on earth is measured differently by everyone. Compared to the mammoth tree, which measures time in thousands of years, the giant green turtle with its 150-200 years seems but a child. And what does a beetle feel, that lives no more than a couple of days, or perhaps a few moments only? Everything is relative therefore, and this is of no importance, for some things are Eternal. And there is one who lived only 353 days, that was all the time he spent with us. I dedicate this mass to Him, and to those who were likewise granted so short a stay on this Earth. Béla Faragó

One of the characters of Suarez's film entitled Don Juan in Hell is a mysterious man accompanied by a silent figure clothed in black, its face painted black and gold, who imitates his every gesture. When asked about his companion, the man always replies: he is with me always, he is my shadow. It is he who utters these words at one of the dramatic turning points of the film: "He who is left alone with his shadow must either change, or die."

I recommend these two compositions primarily to those for who are familiar with the dark side of life and the human soul, and who have experienced during their earthly existence, like Don Juan in the film, the descent into Hell.
Lászó Tihanyi

One of the most frequently employed writers of film and theatre music in Hungary in recent years, László Melis, having received official recognition and several prizes, now makes a debut with his own solo album. Both pieces appearing on the CD share the common characteristics of being based on archaic texts though using material from contemporary literature at the same time, and the music is a synthesis of Gregorian, early European polyphony and elements reminiscent of African ethno that nevertheless has a distinctive contemporary sound. The title piece, written for a percussion group and voice solos, was recorded with the well-known Amadinda Group.

With his opera entitled Three Sisters, Péter Eötvös won several international prizes, among them the Diapason d'or de l'année (France), the ECHO Preis (Germany), the Prix Caecilia (Belgium). The chief piece of his new vocal album, to which he has given the title Two Monologues, intertwines two original parts from the Three Sisters opera, the arias of Tuzenbach and Andrei. The four additonal pieces on the album offer a comprehensive historical survey of those works of Péter Eötvös that investigate the possibilities afforded by various languages and the human voice.

This master of the fusion of various musical cultures has embarked upon an unprecedented venture. In his virtual Muslim organ mass the traditional European concept of culture encounters the spirituality of Muslim ritual, where the organ-sounds are pieced together from original sound samples taken from a dozen famous European organs. László Hortobágyi's discography includes over twenty albums, of which several ten thousands have been sold worldwide.

The recording was sponsored by the National Cultural Fund of Hungary and the HEAR Studio of the Hungarian Radio.

After a three-decade-long career it is the first time the outstanding figure of today's Hungarian contemporary music, the music director of the József Katona Theatre, the lecturer at the Academy of Film and Theatrical Arts has composed an electro-acoustic composition. László Sáry turned to the sounds of steam locomotives and their surroundings; he explores and exaggerates the 'human' features of these lovely engine-monsters that remind us of living creatures.
