Jesus Torres - Manatial de Luz

Jesus Torres - Manatial de Luz
ID: KAI0013012
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Piano

Jesus Torres (born in Saragossa, 1965) is one of the key figures in a very talented generation of Spanish composers who have made a significant contribution to the further development of music in Europe. While they share neither a style nor an ideational background, they do share their point of departure: artistically speaking, they are all "grandchildren" of the great innovators of the post-war period; they came to music after the avant-garde had already gained a permanent, emphatic foothold at the academies - and begun their subsequent march into aesthetic isolation. In order to break free from this, Torres and his colleagues set off on highly individual and divergent musical paths that, viewed as a whole, still set a remarkable example.

Michael Jarrell - Cassandre - a spoken opera for ensemble and actress

Michael Jarrell - Cassandre - a spoken opera for ensemble and actress
ID: KAI0012912
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Opera Collection

It's stretching the conventional, technical definition of the term to call Swiss composer Michael Jarrell's spoken monodrama "Cassandre" an opera, but that's the composer's description of it, and as such, it ought to be respected. It does consist of a musical narrative accompanying a verbal narrative, so even though it doesn't involve singing, it comes closer to standard opera than some pieces that are so designated. Also, the fact that it is so compelling as a unified musical and dramatic entity makes its definition seem less consequential; it's fully successful in using music and story to draw the listener into the protagonist's world. "Cassandre" has received numerous international performances since its 1994 premiere and has been translated into a variety of languages. In its form, popularity, subject matter (the protagonist's reflection on the trauma of war), emotional impact, and to some extent its musical style, it strongly resembles Marc Neikrug's haunting 1980 "music-drama" "Through Roses."

"Cassandre" is based on a text by Christa Wolf that actress Astrid Bas delivers with urgency and poignant dramatic restraint. Jarrell's score for chamber ensemble is notable for the evocative subtlety of its depiction of the Trojan prophet's state of mind as she recounts the horrors of the war. Jarrell avoids the obvious -- the big rhetorical gestures -- that would seem to be appropriate for such a dramatic and grim story, and instead creates a soundworld of gossamer, dream-like ethereality to underscore "Cassandre"'s intimate musings. His orchestration is incandescent, and the music is simply beautiful in its prismatically evolving textures. For a piece that rarely rises above a whisper, it makes a surprisingly visceral impact. IRCAM's Ensemble InterContemporain, led by Susanna Mälkki, plays the challenging score with exceptional grace and delicacy. Kairos' sound is immaculate, as is typical for its releases. Highly recommended for fans of new music.

Mauricio Sotelo - Wall of Light - Music for Sean Scully

Mauricio Sotelo - Wall of Light - Music for Sean Scully
ID: KAI0012832
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

At the interface between contemporary music and flamenco, Sotelo has progressed to become one of the leading European artists of his generation. Possessed by curiosity about sounds - which haunted him even in his dreams - he absorbed sonic impressions from the world around him. There was no piano at home, but the guitar was omnipresent: pop music, Jimi Hendrix, experimental jazz, and above all flamenco and 'cante jondo', the tragic and highly emotional vocal music of the oppressed.

Morton Feldman - Something Wild (Music for film)

Morton Feldman - Something Wild (Music for film)
ID: KAI0012292
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Contemporary music
Subcollection: Film Music

With his disconcertingly hypnotic, excitingly oscillating music, the American Morton Feldman has become a cult figure in recent years. Now, recordings of hitherto unpublished compositions for film are available for the first time on a cd. When we imagine Feldman, we think of pure, crystalline music. But we do not think of wide, soft sounds, that do describe paintings through their power, like you would expect in Hollywood productions. We do not know him like that. On this cd we have two pieces that give notice of the narrow liason with painting, (Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock). Being in the present with the sound, this time music with stories and history: this is how we experience this extraorbitant dramatic art by the fascinating recording by ensemble recherche.

MATTHIAS PINTSCHER - sonic eclipse

MATTHIAS PINTSCHER - sonic eclipse
ID: KAI0013162
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Contemporary music
Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble

In the three-part ensemble cycle sonic eclipse (2009-10), another theme of the compositional process is auditory masking as a step-by-step process of concealment. The solo instrument featured in the work’s first part, is the trumpet, with the horn taking up this role in the secont Part. Part three interlinks the two solo instruments, which in turn proceed to integrate themselves fully with the rest of the ensemble. In search of a metaphor for this process, Pintscher hit upon the phenomenon of the eclipse-in which celestial bodies overlap and cast their shadows upon one another at the moment of complete coverage.

From twilight to twilight and from morning to evening is the range spanned by a twilight’s song and the E.E.Cummings poem upon which it is based. Pintscher composes the “in-between”, a
penetration of the poem’s inflection and structure; the pictorial language is re-sketched via the creation of an “integral of the simulated spatiality”. An instrumental ensemble placed at a considerable distance to one another begins with nearly inaudible whispering and proceeds to conjure up an incipient sonic space consisting of heterogeneous events: rasping, floating; pulsations, plosives, breathing. At its centre, the bass flute’s melodious opening gesture of a prepares the register of the soprano.

For Matthias Pintscher, the shir ha shirim (song of songs) is “a supremely condensed compendium of nearly boundless emotional states. All its sections give the impression of having neither beginning, nor end, nor middle, simply being modes of expression that circle one another.” It is from the fifth song that the Pintscher took the text for his a cappella piece. The words “she-cholat ahavah ani” translate as “how lovesick am I”, and for the composer this is a core sentence which sums up the topic of the love song. Not only in terms of content, but also structurally, the famous Hebrew text opens up very special perspectives. “In Hebrew, words are like islands or sources of energy, since everything in the language is derived from short root words. For a musician or a composer, this represents the opportunity to delve deep into the words’ connotations, since one can oneself shape the flow, the route between the individual words, each one of which is like an object.”

Michael Nyman in Concert (1981,remastered)

Michael Nyman in Concert (1981,remastered)
ID: MNRCD123
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Ensemble

The first Michael Nyman Band Album originally released in 1981
Includes first recording of In Re Don Giovanni

Beautifully packaged in a 6 panel digipack and including two limited edition posters of the the original UK and Japanese LP artwork.

Critically acclaimed as Nyman’s groundbreaking record that combined minimalist, experimentalist music and jazz improvisation for the first time, this album has only ever been available on the rarest of long-since deleted vinyl.

Most of the music on Michael Nyman was material from the early films by Peter Greenaway such as "Bird Anthem" (Act Of God) and "Bird List Song" (The Falls). The album also includes his first concert work for the band, "In Re Don Giovanni" which was released as a single on Les Disques du Crepuscule (home of Cabaret Voltaire, Durutti Column and Josef K amongst others) under the title Mozart. The most groundbreaking track on Michael Nyman, however, is "Waltz in F", a piece Nyman wrote for art students whilst teaching at Trent Polytechnic in 1977, Nyman subsequently commandeering two modern jazz improvisers, Evan Parker and Peter Brotzman, to "destroy" this piece. Ultimately, Parker and Brotzman ended up playing over and around ten separate tracks whilst Nyman and Cunningham mixed in their Waltz.

International Contemporary Ensemble: Daniel Lippel, solo guitar
Jayce Ogren . Matthew Ward

Includes booklet with texts by Daniel Lippel and Jacob Greenberg

This CD presents music for various ensemble configurations and electronics by British-Japanese composer Dai Fujikura, one of the most strikingly original composers of our day, masterfully performed by the New York-based International Contemporary Ensemble featuring guitarist Daniel Lippel.

"I think of Dai as a model of an “international” composer - someone who transcends regional styles and aesthetic schools in favor of his or her individual voice. He is able to deftly allude to and absorb music of different styles without being in the least bit derivative." Daniel Lippel, guitarist, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)
