Music From the Sistine Chapel - Allegri, Anerio, Palestrina, Marenzio

Music From the Sistine Chapel - Allegri, Anerio, Palestrina, Marenzio
ID: COR16047
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

Recorded in November 2006, this disc offers a fascinating collection of works written for the Papal Chapel. Researched and sung by one of the world's leading choirs, The Sixteen and Harry Christophers, this recording includes many world premiere recordings of these rarely heard sacred works. Felice Anerio displays a fluid mastery of the Roman style of composition, and some of his surviving settings are shown to advantage here, in particular his glorious twelve-part setting of Stabat Mater, more ambitious and possibly more beautiful than those by Palestrina and Lassus. Gregorio Allegri is famous for his Miserere (available on coro as cor16014); this recording contains representative examples of his polyphonic style. Together with settings by the towering figure of Palestrina, all receive warm and vital performances.

The massive granite-like choral writing of early sixteenth-century Scottish choral music is here displayed in Carver’s magnificent nineteen-voice votive antiphon O bone Jesu, written for James IV King of Scots. The large-scale Missa Dum sacrum mysterium with its sumptuous polyphony may well have been sung at the coronation of James V in 1513.

Streams of Tears - Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, The Sixteen - Harry Christophers
ID: COR16059
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

Padilla is symbolic of an age. One of the most important composers of the ‘New World’, Padilla was a native of Spain who emigrated to Mexico at a time when the church had money as well as a great appreciation of art in the service of the church. Streams of Tears reflects not only the penitential nature of this music but also a period in history know as the ‘Siglo de Oro’ when Spain and Portugal were masters of the great ocean and in the process of discovering and developing new lands in the Americas. The music of the period is as varied as it is distinctive, with a harmonic richness and colour that is found nowhere else.

Handel- Messiah - The Sixteen, Harry Christophers and Special Edition Bonus CD-Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba

CDs: 3
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection

Arguably the most famous oratorio ever written and certainly Handel’s best known work, Messiah needs little introduction. Composed in a staggering twenty-four days Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742 where it received a rapturous welcome. Not so the following year when it premiered in London to a distinctly hostile reception. It wasn’t until Messiah began to be presented

in charity performances at the Foundling Hospital in London that the public started to embrace the work we now regard as Handel’s greatest composition.

On this disc The Sixteen and Harry Christophers are joined by four soloists all revered Handelians who have had a long association with The Sixteen.

Handel: Coronation Anthems - The Sixteen - Harry Christophers

Handel: Coronation Anthems - The Sixteen - Harry Christophers
ID: COR16066
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

Handel’s Coronation Anthems have delighted audiences ever since their first performance in 1727. They appear in all their glory on this recording interspersed with a selection of Handel favourites including an interesting version of his Organ Concerto in F Major Opus 4 in its original version with the finale of an Hallelujah chorus.

One of Handel’s first tasks as a naturalized British Citizen was to write the music for the Coronation of the new monarch - King George II. Rarely did a composer of the day have such an audience for his new works and Handel composed his four Anthems to match the pomp and grandeur of the occasion and, of course, the venue - Westminster Abbey.

Guerrero: Missa de la batalla escoutez - Janequin: La Guerre

Guerrero: Missa de la batalla escoutez - Janequin: La Guerre
ID: COR16067
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

This brand new recording by Harry Christophers and The Sixteen is dedicated to the works of Spanish Renaissance composer Francisco Guerrero and includes his exquisite Missa de la Batalla Escoutez. The Mass is a parody on Janeuqin's famous chanson 'La Guerre' which also features on this disc. Janequin’s La Guerre, was so popular in the 16th century that it led to numerous composers, including Janequin himself, writing parody mass settings on it. Missa de la Batalla Escoutez is one of the finest of those settings.

Guerrero is a quite astounding and varied composer with a wide expressive range. Heralded in the Renaissance as ‘the most extraordinary of his time in the art of music’, he was more famous than Victoria and Morales. Despite being a master of expression and sublime melodic invention - skills exemplified by his Missa de la Batalla Escoutez and the other fine works on this disc - Guerrero’s work has often been overlooked in favour of that of his contemporaries. With this brand new recording The Sixteen aims to redress the balance.
