John Kitchen harpsichord (1769 Taskin Harpsichord)

John Kitchen - uniquely familiar with Edinburgh's internationally acclaimed collections of early keyboard instruments - turns his attention to the world's most famous harpsichord, the Taskin harpsichord. The reign of Louis XV was the period during which the harpsichord gained its greatest popularity in France, and this glorious 1769 instrument by Pascal Taskin would have been the preferred choice of any composer. Here its opulent lushness is captured in the ideal acoustics of Scotland's oldest concert hall St Cecilia's Hall. The Hall is also home to the Raymond Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments, which houses the Taskin harpsichord. The combination of instrument, venue, programme and performer creates a unique listening experience.

This is John Kitchen's fourteenth solo recording on Delphian. Since his appointment in 2002 as Edinburgh City Organist, he has curated a busy series of concerts in the city's iconic Usher Hall. Recent recital series in the USA and Germany complement his busy programme of activities in the UK. Having studied seventeenth century French harpsichord music whilst Organ Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, John is now Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh University, Conductor of Edinburgh University Singers, and Director of Music of Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Edinburgh.

John Kitchen (the Organ of St James's Church, Bermondsey)

The two books of voluntaries William Russell published before his untimely death open a window on an important and neglected period in English music. Sitting on the cusp of the Romantic period, they bring together the influences of Handel, Haydn and of Russell's friends and contemporaries including Samuel Wesley and John Stanley in a fascinating stylistic mix. For this first recording of the complete voluntaries, John Kitchen has faithfully observed Russell's original performing instructions on a restored 1829 organ whose period qualities bring the music vividly and compellingly to life.

"Kitchen's playing is idiomatic, insightful and fluent." Early Music

"The always supremely musical John Kitchen revels in the organ's endless tonal palette." Choir & Organ

John Kitchen (1755 Kirkman Harpsichord from the Raymond Russell Collection)

Handel’s overtures had an independent life almost from their inception, and the practice of performing them on keyboard instruments has a similarly long pedigree, beginning with a number of transcriptions made by the composer himself. Keyboard specialist John Kitchen virtuosically evokes Handel’s orchestral palette in the welter of timbres and colours which he summons forth from Jacob Kirckman’s 1755 harpsichord, a classic instrument from the very apex of the English harpsichord-building tradition.

St Cecilia’s Hall is the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Scotland, dating from 1763. In 1968 it became home to the Raymond Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments. This already world famous collection was further enhanced in 2005 when the University of Edinburgh received the extraordinary gift of 22 historic keyboard instruments from Rodger and Lynne Mirrey; the galleries at St Cecilia’s Hall now house one of the two most comprehensive collections of early keyboard instruments in the world. The massed voices of the 140-strong National Youth Choir revel in the magnificently soaring lines of Schütz’s sacred music, complemented by John Kitchen’s contributions on the powerful Rieger organ of St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh. Revered by his contemporaries as the ‘Orpheus of our time’, Schütz would never have heard his music performed by forces such as these and on such a scale - surely he would have been a strong advocate of this astounding aural experience. Kitchen’s solo contributions contextualise the choral music with organ works by Samuel Scheidt and other contemporaries of Schütz.
