In 2002 Simon Smith made his recording debut on Delphian in a disc of James MacMillan’s complete piano music, paired with Stuart MacRae’s Piano Sonata. Recordings of music by Hafliði Hallgrímsson and Thomas Wilson have followed. In this new, substantial outing Smith turns from music-making in Scotland to another of his lifelong loves, the music of Alfred Schnittke.

This two-disc set comprises Schnittke’s entire published output for solo piano (including one piece for piano duet and another for six hands at one keyboard). The Russian composer’s music often makes gargantuan demands of the player. Smith’s technical prowess, astonishing dynamic palette and heartfelt musicality make him its ideal exponent.

The famous Bulgarian cellist Ventseslav Nikolov known with his preference for contemporary music and with his significant popularizing activity plays two remarkable 20th-century compositions - the sonatas by Schnittke and Prokofiev. Together with the pianist Rostislav Yovchev, an excellent musician also with proven understanding and attitude to 20th century music, he has registered an inspiring interpretation of the compositions included in the album. The duo reveals the emotional resources of Prokofiev's music and that of Schnittke. It is with mastership in the sound producing and overlapping of timbres and nuances, understanding the essence of the dynamics in the composer's invention, that both cellist and pianist achieve a strongly impressing rendition of the works, whose sincere impulse captivates the listeners.

BELA BARTOK - Concerto for viola and orchestra.

BELA BARTOK - Concerto for viola and orchestra.

Subcollection: Viola

The Bulgarian violist Dimitar Penkov, who has lived in Germany for a number of years, again presents an interesting program. For his two previous CDs on the Gega New label he recorded Jean-Marie Leclaire’s 6 sonatas for two violas, performed together with Johannes Flieder (GD 212) and the concertos for viola and orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki and Karl Stamitz (GD 250). The present program features two concertos, which are representative of the music of the 20th century. Both works were written at the end of the composers’ lives and both were dedicated to legendary violists - Bartok wrote his concerto commissioned by William Primrose, while Schnittke kept a promise he had given Juri Bashmet nine years earlier. The premieres of the works were outstanding events among music circles at that time. Dimitar Penkov continuously proves his skill at performing difficult works. His interpretation of the Honegger sonata for viola and piano was the first studio recording of this work. He also performed the French premiere of Penderecki’s viola concerto. During his career Dimitar Penkov has performed under the batons of such notable conductors as Aldo Cecatto, Pierre Bartholomee, Vassil Stefanov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Lutz Herbig, Gilbert Varga, Konstantin Iliev, Anthony Bramall, Michael Tabachnik, Nikos Athineos, Otmar Maga, and Plamen Djouroff. He has realized numerous recordings for the radios of Paris, Sofia, Zurich, and Hannover. Two films produced by Bulgarian National Television document the instrumental art of Dimitar Penkov. The conductor Nikos Athineos studied at the Athens Conservatory, the Cologne Hochschule fur Musik and the Robert Schumann Institute in Dusseldorf. He has toured throughout Germany, Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Israel, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. As a guest conductor he has appeared with various major European orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Prague Gustav Mahler Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio. The Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most respected ensembles. The orchestra was founded by its chief conductor of more than thirty years, Vassil Stefanov. Other chief conductors have included Alexander Vladigerov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Ruslan Raichev, Milen Nachev. The orchestra is now led by Rossen Milanov.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of 20th century cello music performed by Oleg Vedernikov and Alexey Goribol.
The name of Alexey Goribol, a pianist, public figure, Honoured Artist of Russia and organizer of numerous festivals and music projects is well known to the domestic and foreign listeners, while the name of Oleg Vedernikov whose life ended up so tragically in 2015 is less known to a wide audience. This album is dedicated to the memory of the remarkable cellist.
A graduate of the Ural Conservatory in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Oleg Vedernikov won a silver medal of the 2nd All-Union cello Competition in Yaroslavl in 1988. Then he took a graduate course at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalia Shakhovskaya and was one of her favourite students. Together with Alexey Goribol Vedernikov won the first prize at the chamber competition in Trapani, Italy.
This recording was made in 1993 when Oleg Vedernikov’s performance, in his peers’ opinion, was on top of cello art. The cellist and the pianist make a brilliant ensemble unveiling the entire contradiction and figurative wealth of contemporary music. It was the first joint work to both of the musicians, and it was followed by many years of fruitful artistic partnership.
The album features cello sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich and Alfred Schnittke, and works by Leonid Desyatnikov and Rodion Shchedrin.

Recorded live at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on September 29, 2016.

Firma Melodiya presents Low Strings, the first release from the Melodiya Apriori series.
For the past twenty-five years, a Russian label hasn’t released a project as uncommon and tricky as this. It is absolutely beyond the conventional notion of “chamber music recording,” neither by instrumental lineup (a viola, a cello and a double bass - it’s hardly the most advantageous of combinations that coincides lay belief), nor by selection of the music genres and styles. Matthew Locke, a representative of early English Baroque, Beethoven with his comic “eyeglasses” duet, his contemporary Bernhard Romberg, and next to them Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Ryabov and composers of West European avant-garde with electronics attached.
The artistic will of the performers is perhaps the principal consolidating point of the album. It first of all applies to violist, organizer and enlightener Serge Poltavsky who united the effort of cellist Evgeny Rumyantsev, double bass player Grigory Krotenko (his role in the recording of the album is one of the leading ones) and sound engineer of the Moscow Conservatory and creator of the single sonic space of the Low Strings Mikhail Spassky.
It is also gratifying to hear not a distilled studio work, but live concert sound recorded at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 2016. So, Melodiya, as it did many years ago, documents the recent past again. The fact itself makes us confident that this recording will find its listener.
