Recorded in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1977, this performance by a famous Russian choir demonstrates their sonorous chorus technique and sound. The powerful basses give an added dimension.

The traditional Latin text of requiem mass repeatedly attracted attention of the most prominent composers in the world history. Some of them could discover new contents of austere divine service texts - that was the way the masterpieces like Mozart’s and Verdi’s ones appeared. The German composer of the 17th century Heinrich Schutz was the first who turned to the scriptural texts in his mother tongue translated by Martin Luther. Johannes Brahms followed him and named his requiem “German”. The passages, taken from Old and New Testaments and united in the composition, do not correspond the established order of the requiem mass. Probably, Brahms’ “Requiem” is some meditation on caducity of human life and inevitability of physical death that is expressed in vocal and symphony genre. Brahms was hatching the idea of this composition within ten years. His close friend Robert Chopin’s tragic death became some “starting point” of the idea. Moreover, his mother’s death served as reasonable grounds for completing of what had been started. The Old and New Testaments texts united in the composition form the basis of seven diverse parts. The first and the last parts - “Blessed are they that mourn…” and “Blessed are the dead…”- organically frame the cycle. The meditation on Death (“For all flesh is as grass…”) in the second part is balanced by the idea of Resurrection (“For here have we no continuing city…”) in the sixth one. The mournful third part (“Lord, make me know mine end…”) finds its consolation in the fifth one. The central part of the Requiem “How lovely are thy tabernacles” makes gradual transition from sorrow and mourns to hope for life after death. The Yurlov State Academic Chorus was named after Alexander Yurlov soon after the death of the talented musician and choir conductor. His unexpected death happened when the choir was rocketing to its peak of mastery. The group was obliged with this success to its brilliant leader. Within those fated 15 years that Alexander Yurlov and the choir worked together (1958-1973) they won fame of the best alliance of the singers and the conductor in the Russian chorus music of the Soviet period. Juri Ukhov who worked as chapel master of the choir since 1964 was brought up and matured in the heart of the choir. At that time he was a witness of brilliant performance of Brahms’ “Ein Deutches Requiem” and “Schicksalslied”. Several years later he got an opportunity to perform “Requiem” in the concert. The recording from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory gives the bright idea of the sonorous chorus manner of singing that was made of mellow timbre of female choir, silver ringing of tenors and powerful basses. The latter were especially valued for their uniqueness and fascination in our country.

Melodiya presents a set of Prokofiev’s piano concertos performed by Vladimir Krainev. One of the brightest composers/pianists of his time, Prokofiev reflected in his piano concertos the most recognizable features of his artistic individuality like in a mirror. Having resolutely deserted the romantic tradition of the concerto genre, he created a new type of it. The motive toccata style, a splendid technique of scales and passages - all combined with fragile lyricism; sharp grotesque contrasts - and a sunny emotion of life-asserting; a crystal clear form and pattern - and sudden twists of the musical “plot”… This is what a figurative world of these works appears to be with each of them being individual realization of the genre and never continuing the line of the previous one.People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Krainev is indeed among the best interpreters of domestic music of the 20th century. While a student of the Moscow Conservatory, he became a world-famous pianist after his victories at the international competitions in Leeds and Lisbon. In 1970, he won the first prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition.Apart from his flawless technical skills and rich sound palette, Vladimir Krainev was notable for a bright temperament which often roused the artist to do bold and even risky interpretations (one of the Austrian newspapers dubbed him “a tiger of keys on the arena”). That is probably why Prokofiev’s music was so dear to Krainev, who always had the composer’s concertos, sonatas and numerous piano pieces in his repertoire. Vladimir Krainev recorded Prokofiev’s five piano concertos were recorded with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society conducted by Dmitri Kitayenko.

Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set dedicated to the 75th anniversary of one of the outstanding contemporary Russian conductors, Dmitri Kitayenko.

“Today he can be undoubtedly considered one of the five or six best conductors of the world. This phenomenon is out of the ordinary”, Herbert von Karajan wrote about Kitayenko after the young Soviet conductor gave a brilliant performance at the international competition in Vienna, receiving the second prize and winning the hearts of the Viennese audience and media. Evgeny Svetlanov also greeted his younger colleague on the pages of the Soviet press as a talented and promising conductor.

A graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory who also completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatory and a training course at the Vienna Academy of Music, Dmitri Kitayenko had a brilliant start to his conducting career. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Under his leadership the celebrated orchestra substantially expanded its repertoire and actively toured.

During recent decades, the conductor worked with the orchestras of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States and regularly recorded.

This 6 CD set includes recordings made by Dmitri Kitayenko in the studio and in the concert hall between 1975 and 1987 with the orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire included showcases the conductor’s stylistic diversity and highest mastery.

These recordings will be of interest to those who remembers Kitayenko’s performances of the past years and to a new generation of listeners as well.

Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set titled “International Tchaikovsky Competition. Phonographic Documents (1958-1986)”.
The first ever Soviet music tournament instantly became one of the world’s most prestigious competitions. The piano jury was chaired by Emil Gilels for many years, while David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich headed the violin and cello juries, respectively. Alexander Sveshnikov, an outstanding choirmaster and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory, was a chairman of the vocal jury. For the fifty years of its existence, the Tchaikovsky Competition discovered numerous distinguished performers such as Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenasi, Grigory Sokolov, Eliso Virsaladze, John Lill, Michail Pletnev, Viktor Tretiakov, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Elena Obraztsova, Maria Gulegina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yevgeny Nesterenko and Paata Burchuladze to name but a few. The set captures the brightest moments of eight Tchaikovsky Competitions in all categories. The recordings, including a number of never-before-released ones, were made immediately during the competition auditions
and at the prize-winners’ recitals. The release is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great Russian composer.

Firma Melodiya presents never-before-released recordings of András Schiff made at the V Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1974.

One of the most prominent pianists of modern times, András Schiff is nevertheless does not belong to the so-called competition format. The musician who earned the pedestal of philosopher pianist, “a representative of intellectual musical tradition in its high apprehension,” has never had virtuosity, sonic lustre and visual artistry in his sphere of interests.

However, the live recordings of the then 21-year-old Hungarian are of unquestionable interest. Soviet music critic Leonid Gakkel described his impressions of Schiff’s performance in the following way: “From his very first note at the competition Schiff struck me with the vigour of his performance, and that was vigour of the highest festivity… What a touch on the piano, what a charge of energy, what burning fingers! Ultimate activity of a creating spirit at each moment of playing…”

At the competition, Schiff played piano works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, variation cycles and concertos by Tchaikovsky and Brahms. In the opinion of Yevgeny Malinin, a competent judge and professor of the Moscow Conservatory, Schiff “read music without a drop of wilfulness: he lived in and with it.” The panel gave him only the fourth prize (“incomplete correspondence” with general virtuosity and competition standards had an impact). However, it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that it was the Tchaikovsky Competition that brought the first significant success and international repute to the outstanding pianist.
