Cliffe, who wrote very few works, was an intensely Bruckner-inspired composer with the same fondness of beautifully crafted theme work. The third movement is truly heaven. Cloud and Sunshine -is also a quite interesting work -the beginning really sounds as if it could be played by an organ! |

Hallén was a true Wagnerian -but most of his works are or a rather more intimate scale. Gustaf Wasa may have been a king of war or unrest in Sweden but the suite that comes from a play is more subdued and peaceful. The other pieces are also rather intimate -and Hallén's orchestration is very skillful and personal. The opening piece, Romanze, betrays a debt to Hallén's teacher Reinecke. |

Schnyder von Wartensee was an early romantic, and a good friend of Beethoven. His music is typical early romantic - perhaps more like Haydn and Schubert than like Beethoven.
Some rather weird twists in the symphony makes one believe that there was perhaps stronger stuff than milk in that "suppe". Lovely, engaging performance typical of Fifield and the Württembergische Philharmonie. |

Here is a completely individual Swiss romantic who also worked as a doctor. The music is on the verge of Romantic music. The first symphony is idyllic in character, while the second is much more dramatic with a beautiful crafted little scherzo. The first movement seems inspired of the Swiss cuckoo clock. This thematic idea runs through most of the symphony. Those who enjoy music by Butterworth and contemporary composers will enjoy this release. |
