Helmut Lachenmann - Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern

Helmut Lachenmann - Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern
ID: KAI0012282
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

The event: Helmut Lachenmann's extraordinary music theatre, in a new production by the Stuttgart Opera, performed in Paris, is available here for the first time on CD. The precursor: Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The little girl, who freezes to death on New Year's Eve, experiences a brief moment of happiness, as she dies, thanks to the matches....the sweet wretchedness is transposed into the existential sphere, but also into contemporary history. Texts by the German terrorist Gudrun Ensslin ensure that. The music is marked by intense physicality and sensuality.

Johannes Maria Staud -Apeiron

Johannes Maria Staud -Apeiron
ID: KAI0012672
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: New Music

When Johannes Maria Staud refers in a commentary to one of his works to the pre-Socratic philosopher Anaximander and the latter’s contrasting pair of concepts apeiron (unlimited or infinite) and peras (limited or finite), he outlines a fundamental problem: the conflict between associative invention and logical development. The two compositions of the same name, however, are less suited to separate the two aspects of this relationship than to explore the various priorities between them. (Daniel Ender)

Includes booklet with texts by Daniel Ender, Durs Grünbein and Johannes Maria Staud

Born in 1974, Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud has established a solid international career, including a substantial presence in the U.S., as featured guest composer at Tanglewood, and with a three-year residency with the Cleveland Orchestra. Apeiron, the highlighted work on this disc, is scored for a massive orchestra of 101 players, and while it has moments of gossamer delicacy, when Staud pulls out all the stops, he makes good use of all 101 players to create music of cataclysmic power. The title is taken from a cosmological theory developed by Greek philosopher Anaximander to describe the primal chaos that embraced and incorporated all things, and from which all things developed, and it's an apt metaphor for the sound of the music itself. Staud has said that the development of his pieces is organic rather than architectural, and Apeiron has a spontaneity and unpredictability that's more viscerally gripping than analytically explicable. Apeiron is the most intriguing and engaging piece.

José M. Sánchez-Verdu - Orchestral Works

José M. Sánchez-Verdu - Orchestral Works
ID: KAI0012782
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection

1 - Junge Deutsche Philharmonie - Lothar Zagrosek, conductor
2 - Claudia Barainsky, soprano / Gabriel Suovanen, baritone / Banchetto musicale, viola da gamba / Orchestre de la Suisse Romande - Marek Janowski, conductor
3 - Joan-Enric Lluna, clarinet / Orquesta Nacional de España - Miguel Harth-Bedoya, conductor
4 - hr-Sinfonieorchester - Pascal Rophé, conductor
5 - 7 hr-Sinfonieorchester - Peter Rundel, conductor

The five orchestral works on this CD communicate phenomenal colors and the intense sensuousness of mysterious formal progressions. Silence, shadows, absence: it is above all the darker neighborhoods of the human soul that captivate Sánchez-Verdú’s interest. Exploring marginal realms which, in their beauty and refinement of tone, contain both the brilliant light of Spain’s south and utter darkness: this is the art of composer José M. Sánchez-Verdú.

Concertmaster: Judita Haeberlin, Barbara Bultmann

The pieces of this cd are new compositions of Manuel Hidalgo and arrangements of works by Ludwig van Beethoven. Hidalgo was born in Atequera in 1956 and was a student of Helmut Lachenmann.
A glance at his catalogue of works reveals Hidalgo’s intense interest in the “Beethoven the giant,” whose music-alongside that of Mozart-has accompanied him since childhood. His Beethoven arrangements range from the Scherzo of the Symphony No. 9 op. 125 to the Heiliger Dankgesang op. 132 for voices, and from the Introduction and Fugue of the Hammerklavier Sonata op. 106 for accordion and orchestra to the variation movement from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 109. The latest addition to this group of works is the Bagatelles. (Patrick Hahn)

Horizon 4 - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mahler, Glanert, Jeths and Roukens

Horizon 4 - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mahler, Glanert, Jeths and Roukens
ID: RCO11001
CDs: 2
Type: SACD
Subcollection: Violin

This fourth release in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s ‘Horizon’ Series brings together two forms of homage. CD 1 represents a tribute to Gustav Mahler, the orchestra having devoted itself to a large-scale project commemorating the composer’s 150th birthday and the 100th anniversary of his death during its 2009- 2011 seasons. In addition to a chronological series of performances of all the great symphonies - effectively constituting the third Mahler Festival held in Amsterdam following those of 1925 and 1995, the orchestra programmed a series of concerts featuring works exhibiting a strong connection to Mahler’s compositions. Four world premieres of works composed for this series have been brought together on CD 1, the fifth being the opening title on CD 2.
The three other recordings on CD 2 feature members of the orchestra playing high-profile roles as solo or ensemble players, thereby symbolising a hommage to the virtuosity and the musical intelligence and flexibility of the 120 individual musicians making up the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Oboist Alexei Ogrintchouk and trombonist Jörgen van Rijen are heard here in the world premieres of two works written for their instruments by Rodion Shchedrin and Luciano Berio respectively. Assistant principal violinist Marijn Mijnders and Monica Naselow, a member of the second violin section, team up in an explosive performance of Hindson’s 'Chrissietina’s Magic Fantasy' for two violins, the discovery of the chamber music marathon with which the Society of Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2009.
