KONSTANTIN ILIEV - COMPOSITIONS

KONSTANTIN ILIEV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD139
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

This is the first release of one of the most praised and denied creative artists of the Bulgarian school of composing. His works have always been subject to controversy, most often ending with the repudiation of the respective opus. Still, with his very first compositions he established himself as an innovator, vanguard author, relentless to the commonplace and the conventional in constant search of new roads for the Bulgarian musical output. The album has the character of a retrospection tracing down the development of a talent. The combination of Iliev's Concerto Grosso (1949-50) - one of his earliest works in the traditions of post-neoclassicism, with his Fragments (1968) and his last Sixth Symphony (1984-85), gives an idea of the author's enormous creative and intellectual potential. Iliev himself conducts his Fragments, dedicated to the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra directed by him with love and inspiration. The other conductors featured in this CD, Vassil Kazandjiev and Yordan Dafov, are two of the composer's closest friends and colleagues.

STAMITZ PENDERECKI - Viola Concertos - Dimitar Penkov, viola

STAMITZ PENDERECKI - Viola Concertos - Dimitar Penkov, viola
ID: GD250
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Viola

Concerto per viola ed orchestra, NDR Orchestra, Aldo Ceccato, conductor

There are two centuries that separate the composers included in this release - Karl Philipp Stamitz (1745-1801) and Krzystof Penderecki (1933). Living in two different epochs, their works reflect not only the development of music, but also the history of the viola concerto. Stamitz' Konzert D Dur for Viola and Orchestra was composed when the genre was still in its early stage, the interest in the instrument itself was quite lively and its technical means and expressive resources provoked the curiosity of the composers. When Penderecki wrote Concerto per viola ed orchestra, the viola had long since established itself in the composers' practice. The idea of combining the two composers is very interesting and requires incredible artistic mastership.
The two concertos have been recorded by the talented Bulgarian viola player Dimitar Penkov. Having graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, he is laureate of a number of prestigious international competitions. He specialized with Prof. Yfrah Neaman in London and has enjoyed a successful performing career working with conductors like Pierre Bartholomee, Michael Tabachnik, Aldo Ceccato, Gilbert Varga, Vassil Kazandjiev, Konstantin Iliev, Alexander Vladigerov and others. Accepting the invitation of Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Bartholomee, he made a premire performance of Penderecki's viola concerto in France, which was recorded live by Radio Paris (1985). Since 1983 he has been living in Hanover, Germany.

While 19th century Western Europe music includes different styles and schools, there is no such division among Russian composers. During that time Russia marks a period of real national upsurge in enhancing the Russian nation. For this reason, the Russian composers turn back to the traditional village folklore and consider it basic for the future development of Russian musical culture. Glinka was the first to look back to the Russian musical heritage. His works provide a basis for the Russian classical music school. The realistic traditions in his music are followed also by the next generation of composers.
At the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s a group of composers (Balakirev, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui) created the group “The Five”, dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian brand of music and truthful representation of real life. They follow the path of Glinka and Dargomizhsky in creating works which are closely connected to folk art. However, they also stand out with their brilliant artistic talent and the innovations they made in opera, symphonic and chamber music. Tchaikovsky also shares their outlook. He often uses Russian folklore, but is interested mainly in the inner life of man, and not in large-scale historical dramas. In this sense, his music is more closely related to everyday romance, than to the traditional folklore. Tchaikovsky also creates a new type of ballet music. Music had mainly accompaniment functions before him. He makes it stand on its own in the whole performance. By employing the expressive means of symphonic music, the composer reveals the dramatic content of the work.
20th century composers are also influenced by their predecessors. They develop the folk traditions and enrich them with the expressive means of their time.
