NORTHERN LIGHTS - John Casken - robert Saxton - Judith Weir - KREUTZER QUARTET
ID: MSV28507
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: String instruments

The three composers featured on this CD are in themselves leading lights of the contemporary music scene in the UK, and their works (of which these are first recordings) very fine examples of the modern string quartet, all extremely accessible.

tracks: John Casken: String Quartet no. 2
Judith Weir: String Quartet
Robert Saxton: Songs, Dances and Ellipses

The Kreutzer Quartet has forged an enviable reputation as one of the Europe’s most dynamic and innovative string quartets. The ‘Independent’ newspaper summed up their playing as ‘Passion, Grace and Steel…’.
They are the dedicatees of numerous works, and over many years forged creative partnerships with composers including Sir Michael Tippett, David Matthews, Michael Finnissy, Judith Weir, and Haflidi Hallgrimsson. They have a particularly strong relationship to a cross-section of leading American composers, having collaborated intensively with the great George Rochberg in the last few years of his life, as long as working closely with figures as Elliott Schwartz, and the prolific symphonist Gloria Coates.
As recording artists they have won critical acclaim for their discs on the Naxos, Metier, and Chandos labels. Their work in collaboration with art galleries has garnered much attention, and large audiences, particularly their annual residency at the Tate Gallery, St Ives. In 2008 they appeared at several Festivals including the Venice Biennale, and the Montpelier Festival. They are ‘Artists in association’ at York University. The performers on this CD are Peter Sheppard Skærved (violin), Gordon MacKay (violin), Bridget Carey (viola), and Neil Heyde (cello).
Of the works presented here there are no other recordings of the Casken and Saxton pieces, and at the recording of these, the composers were present, so it can be assumed they are precisely what the composers actually envisaged when writing the works.

The Kreutzer Quartet includes:

Peter Sheppard Skærved (Violin)
Mihailo Trandafilovski and previously Gordon MacKay (Violin)
Morgan Goff and previously Bridget Carey (Viola)

Works for oboe and strings (either string trio or quartet) form a considerable part of the oboe's historic repertoire. Works first appeared in the 1750s and by the 1770s were very popular. Over 100 works survive from this period; the most famous being the Mozart Oboe Quartet in F K370. It is not, however, until the 20th century that works are once again written for this ensemble, many for the renowned British oboists Leon Goossens and Janet Craxton. Surrounding these figures a substantial body of music for oboe and string trio or quartet has been written, the most well known work being Britten’s Phantasy Quartet op 2. The works for oboe and strings represented on this CD, while in many ways being part of this great tradition, offer significantly different ways of writing for the ensemble; taking different compositional and stylistic approaches to the music and particularly in their writing for the oboe. These various approaches demonstrate the potential of this medium; its artistic and aesthetic range. Of the other three works, Finnissy’s two pieces present the oboe as a soloist with an ensemble accompaniment and Redgate’s Éperons for oboe and one percussionist offers a different approach to writing for the instrument in a chamber music setting. Since his time as a student at the Royal Academy of Music, Christopher Redgate has specialised in the performance of contemporary oboe music. This specialisation has inspired many composers to write for him and as a result he has given premiere performances of a great number of works. His performing career has taken him all over the world, working as a soloist and in many ensembles. His performances frequently include the use of electronics and especially of the laptop computer and for many years now he has been including improvisation as a significant part of his recitals. He has been active as a teacher both of oboe and in workshops for composers. He broadcasts regularly for BBC R3 and has several solo CDs available. He has recently contributed three articles to an edition of Contemporary Music Review, is working on a book on the interpretation of contemporary oboe music and contributing a chapter in a new book on the music of Michael Finnissy.

While the string quartet is most usually associated with the Germanic traditions, many fine quartets have emanated from a variety of sources in more recent times, and the Catalan area is such. The four quartets recorded here are important becuase they offer a picture of quartet writing outside the main European canon; the four composers are of the generation after the great Roberto Gerhard, who left Spain for Britain in 1939 but whose roots in Catalan music created the cornerstone for this new school of expression.

David Gorton is a very highly respected British composer whose music is firmly modernist - very difficult to play, but which is also very approachable and accessible. Here Neil Heyde provides a stunning performance of the Cello Sonata and a second version, given a very different interpretation in a live recital. We have the two tiny but intense Caprices for solo violin, a fine work for Piano Trio and the String Quartet Trajectories, a modern model for that genre. All are first recordings, produced and supervised by the composer.

The music of David Gorton first began to receive attention in 2001 when he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize while still a student. The subsequent commission for the London Sinfonietta, Oblique Prayers, outlined a distinctive and unique sound-world described by one commentator as combining “an acute imagination for delicate timbral invention with a prodigious command of the unfolding of this half-hour ritual drama” (The Independent).
Gorton studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle and Simon Bainbridge. His music can be described as technically demanding for the performers, and for the listener it is complex and challenging - one commentator remarked that it is music in a constant state of restless evolution.
As a soloist and chamber musician Neil Heyde has appeared throughout Europe, and in the USA and Australia. Since the mid 90s he has been the cellist of the Kreutzer Quartet and he now heads the postgraduate programmes at the Royal Academy of Music, where his work focuses on the relationships between performance, composition and analysis. He has commissioned and premiered many solo and chamber pieces and is also dedicated to performing and recording neglected areas of the repertoire.
