Live recording in the Hall of Columns of the Unions House, Moscow, October 20, 1954
Maria Veniaminovna Yudina (1899 - 1970) was a Soviet pianist. Yudina's playing was marked by great virtuosity, spirituality, strength and intellectual rigor, with a highly idiosyncratic style and tone. She was an extensively performing performer who performed mainly in recitals or in a chamber ensemble. Her interests included, first of all, the latest Russian and world music: Yudina was the first performer in the USSR of a number of works by A. Berg, P. Hindemith, E. Kshenek, B. Bartok, A. Webern, O. Messiaen, and others.
Maria Yudina was one of the non-conforming artists. Her performance style, as well as her overall philosophical and aesthetical views on the nature of creativity, were very often at loggerheads with the established norms, which provoked a strong reaction in academic musical circles, causing a rejection of her art. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Yudina was critical of the 'romantic' treatment of the piano. The music of Bach, which she admired all her life, has a special place in her legacy. Yudina's immediately recognisable hand (the extremely prominent articulation, the expressiveness of narration, the fervent grandeur of her musical 'speech') gives the preludes and fugues a subjectively powerful character, where the asceticism and meaningfulness of thought combine to form an integral artistic whole.

Youri Boutsko is an outstanding Russian composer yet little known in the West, a representative of the generation of Soviet authors whose creative developmenttook place in the 1960s. He belongs to the same brilliant assemblage as Arvo Pärt, Edison Denisov, Valentin Silvestrov, Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli - artists who influenced the development of the spiritual and intellectual trend in music in the second half of the twentieth century.
Youri Boutsko's piano cycle "From the Diary" consists of four fascicules, each reflecting the composer's deeply personal and spiritual experiences. It combines philosophical reflections, inner emotions, and the search for a new musical language that organically incorporates the traditions of Russian culture. The recording of this cycle offers to the audiencean opportunity to connect with one of the significant works of contemporary Russian piano music.
Yuri Butsko - From the Diary. Performed by Alexei Chernov
The piano cycle From the Diary by Yuri Butsko is a rare and deeply personal masterpiece of Russian music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Spanning four notebooks written over nearly two decades, it traces an inner journey through memory, faith, and philosophical reflection.
Alexei Chernov, a close friend of the composer and one of his most dedicated interpreters, offers the world premiere recording of the complete cycle. His performance is not only a tribute to Butsko’s spiritual and artistic legacy, but also a profound personal statement - the result of study, friendship, and artistic affinity.
With expressive clarity, architectural depth, and emotional honesty, Chernov brings to life this intimate musical diary, illuminating its poetic imagery, chant-based structures, and timeless philosophical tone. His interpretation invites listeners into a unique sound world where silence, melody, and memory become one. |

Subkolektion: Piano The fourth in our acclaimed series which presents Beethoven's Violin Sonatas in their musical and social context, alongside works by Beethoven's contemporaries and pupils. Here we present the op. 23 adn 24 Sonatas together with the very fine and little known C minor Sonata, op. 38. by Ferdinand Ries.
This is the fourth disc in a series that sets Beethoven’s sonatas in their social and musical context. The Opus 23 & 24 (Frühlingssonate) Sonatas were commissioned by Baron Moritz de Fries and were first performed in Vienna 1800. The connection with Ferdinand Ries was that his father had been a teacher of violin technique to Beethoven, and Beethoven reciprocated with piano lessons for Ferdinand, when he settled in Vienna in 1801.

Dramatic and moving, they have been described as a celebration of, and insight into, the composer's spirit, capturing a maelstrom of elation and stillness. The CD sleeve includes an illuminating essay by John Butt, one of the world's leading academic authorities on Bach.

Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Piano Keith Barnard is a British composer whose music, rooted in spiritual exploration, both Eastern and Western, and is what is generically and rather loosely called "New Age" but which description does his thoughtful and deeply felt compositions a disservice. This world premiere recording is finely executed by American pianist Jeffrey Grossman.
Keith Barnard (b. 1950) was born in London, England, and studied composition with Arnold Cooke, a pupil of Paul Hindemith. Barnard’s music is often explicitly linked with healing and color rays, and many of his titles name the colors invoked by particular compositions and their instrumentation and designation.
Though Barnard has composed music for many instrumental and ensemble combinations, music for the piano forms the core of his output. His style draws together diverse influences, including the traditional Romantic pianistic tradition represented by Chopin and Liszt, the colorist French impressionist tradition of Debussy and Ravel, the 20th century mysticism of Alan Hovhaness and, above all, the music and philosophy of Alexander Scriabin.
As an active pianist himself, Barnard has frequently appeared in concert throughout Europe performing his own works for piano. His music for the instrument ranges from short pieces up to The Secret Tones of the Divine Spheres, a one-movement piano work of nearly three hours duration. Besides piano music, he has written a chamber opera, four symphonies, concerti for cello, piano, and organ, and numerous chamber works. In recent years, he has composed a series of organ works at the behest of American organist Carson Cooman, including 'The Purest Silence of the Divine', an evening-length organ cycle.

Subkolektion: Violin Paul Whitty works with both amplified and electronic music with ensemble [rout] (CD29001) and with acoustic instruments as in de-coding skin (CD25021). Recently Paul has been engaged in a series of interventions in pre-existing scores - undertaking an almost archaeological examination of the materials found there. Thirty-nine pages filters and re-organises each page of the Henle Edition of Cesar Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major. Fragments of the Franck can be heard emerging - a single note, a chord, a phrase - from the often stark and simple textures of the surrounding material. This recording is superbly performed by artists who have built fine reputations in the world of new music.

Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Piano Laurence Crane's music is thoroughly contemporary, but has hardly a dissonance in the whole 80 minutes of this CD. His music can be described as super-minimalist, but that would ignore the incredibly fine transitions of harmony and time embedded in his works. Ultimately this is music for the post-modernist age, and it can have no better advocate than Michael Finnissy, himself one of the foremost composers of our time.
