Sterling breaking new grounds! First CD from French part of Switzerland. More composers than Honegger made a mark in Europan music history. Maurices music is refined in late romantic and sometimes impressionistic style. Many pieces on the disc give a lasting impression of an extremely gifted and dynamic personality with all knowledge in orchestral writing. Grieg seems to have been a source of inspiration in the "Pécheur" and "Francesca". |

Subcollection: Piano This is the true fill up in the catalogue. Neither of these concertos has been recorded before. They are written in romantic style (what do you think??). The second movement of the Piano Concerto track 2, should make this concerto just as wellknown as the Grieg or Schumann concertos.

Another Swiss romantic! Herman Suter was the pupil and follower of Hans Huber. Mahler was very much the source of inspiration for Suter in the symphony. A drastic and colourful scherzo is followed by an intensely lyrical third movement! Jelmolis charming short pieces completes the disc. |

Malmö Opera orchestra, Conductor Christopher Fifield. First English romantic on the Sterling label. Cliffe, who wrote very few works, was an intensely Bruckner-inspired composer with the same fondness of beautifully crafted theme work. The third movement is truly heaven. Cloud and Sunshine -is also a quite interesting work -the beginning really sounds as if it could be played by an organ! |

The most interesting feature with Huber in younger years is the fact that his theme work originally seem rather undistinguished. Still when working on the material, he alway find something convincing with them! This goes for the 1st. And Lotolff, Concerto Symphonique no 5 is not far away... The 3rd is a completely other matter. Here he is absolutely personal, also in the choice of themes! Just the beginning is arresting in it´s refinement. A stunning continuation of the symphonic complete series! |

For all people interested in body and movement, the name Dalcroze is not unfamiliar. He owned a special institute in Geneva and devoted much time and effort to the development of his theories. But he was certainly also a very secure and very productive composer. This CD with some very charming pieces reminding of Messager will serve as a starting point. |

Collection: Early Romantics Subcollection: Orchestra Schnyder von Wartensee was an early romantic, and a good friend of Beethoven. His music is typical early romantic - perhaps more like Haydn and Schubert than like Beethoven.
Some rather weird twists in the symphony makes one believe that there was perhaps stronger stuff than milk in that "suppe". Lovely, engaging performance typical of Fifield and the Württembergische Philharmonie. |
