Our latest production for the Metropolitan collection; these suites were recorded in New York with an extraordinary instrument, a Stradivarius from 1667. One of the most important chamber music pieces in the repertoire, one of the most important pieces ever written for the violoncello if not the most and one of the finest in Bach’s catalogue, here in a new, refreshing and attractive recording with a great sound, instrument and performer.

This box set consists of the complete Well-tempered Clavier series by J.S. Bach, performed by Jill Crossland. Colloquially known as the “48” from the two books of twenty-four preludes and fugues, these works form one of the great landmarks of keyboard repertoire.

In Jill Crossland’s own words, ‘No other music is so perfect an integration of emotional expression and intellectual rigour’. Jill first performed the complete Well-tempered Clavier from memory as a student in Manchester.

Dietrich Buxtehude died 300 years ago. This North German, 17 years older than Johann Sebastian Bach, was one of the major figures in the 17th century, particularly in the areas of organ and sacred music. Japanese organist Kei Koto, who is professor at the Lausanne Conservatory and author of a number of superb recordings (consecrated particularly to Bach), makes her debut for Claves with a magnificent triple album featuring the organ music of the master from Lübeck; the recordings were made on five historic organs in Northern Europe (Hamburg, Roskilde, Groningen, Payerne and Tangermünde) between the end of 2006 and September 2007. In order to increase interest in this anthology, she has added a CD centering around Buxtehude’s “Magnificat” for organ and similar works by illustrious predecessors and contemporaries. The texts in the accompanying booklet were written by eminent French specialist Gilles Cantagrel, whose biography about the German musician that was published by Fayard in 2006 already has earned recognition as a standard work.
