Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Piano and Cello The works on this recording reflect the richness of the cello repertoire from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.
Mozart's unfinished Sonata movement in B flat is here, having been completed by Annette Isserlis. The disc also includes works by Mozarts's pupils: J N Hummel's "Variations à la Monférine" Op.54 and Wölfl's Sonata in D Op. 31 are both beautifully crafted and make virtuoso demands on the performers. Together with the exquisite Mozart inspired sonata by Hélène Liebmann, this is a CD of exhilarating and unjustly neglected masterpieces.
Cello Classics' founder Sebastian Comberti and fortepianist Maggie Cole play on instruments of the period, bringing these works to light in all their true colours. |

Subkolektion: Piano and Cello The chamber works on this CD by Julian Dawes give a representative sample of a compelling selection from his uniquely wide-ranging and varied output, the continuing traditional English style of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Finzi but with its own individual voice and orchestral sound.
Amongst his 20th century English influences are the pastoralism and extended tonality of Herbert Howells, the richness of Walton, the elegant delicacy of Berkeley and the jazzy impetus of Rodney Bennett; wider European influences include the caustic irony of Shostakovich and Kurt Weil, and the rhythmic impetus of Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Yet Dawes welds from these influences an individual voice that is both distinctive and refreshing, displaying assured craftsmanship and characterful invention. (Malcolm Miller 2008) |

Kolektion: Chamber MusicSubkolektion: Piano and Cello Giles Swayne's works for cello exhibit an astonishing array of moods and colours. The restless beauty of Four Lyrical Pieces and strident romanticism of the Sonata offer remarkable counterpoint to his sublime Suite for solo cello. Canto seduces us with its intoxicating symbiosis of traditional African and Western art music.
Swayne:
Four Lyrical Pieces, Op. 6
Suite No. 1 for solo cello, Op. 111
Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 103
Canto for cello, Op. 31

The composers Edvard Grieg, Jean Sibelius and Ingvar Lidholm all wrote music for cello and piano. The works were all composed during various stages of the composers lives, and reflect in different ways, traditions, influences and new tendencies in Nordic music and the developments between 1867 and 1955. What they all had in common was leaving the Nordic countries for the continent at various stages in their lives for studies, concerts or inspiration. On these travels they met early the great persons of the day in music, art and literature. There they experienced the different tendencies that grew during the last part of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century and they brought home these experiences. |

Kolektion: Chamber MusicSubkolektion: Piano and Cello Franck´s Sonata in A major and Bloch´s Schelemo are two salient cello compositions both for their impressive effect on audiences and for the gruelling demands on the interpreters´ virtuoisity. The recording was made live at a galvanizing performance without a single cut, and yet, in terms of interpretation and sound quality, it can stand the strictest comparison with any studio recording. At the age of 24, The cellist Kryštof Lecian made his way into the Cambridge dictionary of world vituosos How in Music and Musicians. |
