Subcollection: Piano

Emma Abbate & Julian Perkins (piano duet)
Pianists Julian Perkins and Emma Abbate have come together to record the first of two volumes of the complete piano duets of Mozart on original fortepianos.

Some of Mozart’s lesser-known works, his piano duets span most of his active life, with the earliest written at the age of nine. Often delightful and lyrical as well as humorous and exciting, these works are given an authentic air on period instruments. Included on this first volume are duets in D major K381, C major K521 and B-flat major, K358. Also included is a duet by Johann Christian Bach, with whom the infant Mozart is alleged to have played keyboard duets whilst sitting on the older composer's lap.

In this inspired live concert recording, Terry Riley, one of the Master - Composers of our century, plays a kaleidoscopic improvisational journey of solo piano music from his Piano Cycle The Harp of New Albion and from Salome Dances for Peace, originally composed for String Quartet, which is recorded here for the first time in its piano version.

The listener will find new in this recording the magic and extraordinary beauty which breathlessly held the attention of the audience that evening.
In Riley's opinion, this is one of his best piano albums.

DVD Extra: Thomas Adès and Tal Rosner in conversation

The London Sinfonietta combine two works from Thomas Adès, one of the most distinctive and popular voices in modern composition. Both works feature accompanying films (by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements) that are included in this CD/DVD set. This is the second CD for the London Sinfonietta with Signum. It follows their October release of music by Louis Andriessen, featuring the UK premiere of Anaïs Nin, alongside his famed work De Staat.

In Seven Days is a musical interpretation for piano and orchestra of the biblical ‘creation’ by Thomas Adès, composed in collaboration with a film-piece by the artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. Both music and film evoke the processes of the creation rather than the objects described in the movement titles, using simple elements in repeated and evolving contexts in a perpetual state of flux, change and growth.

The Piano Studies Nos 6 & 7 are arrangements of player-piano works by the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. An influential figure to generations of composers, Nancarrow’s studies for the player-piano (or pianola) allowed him to generate music of extreme rhythmic complexity in a multitude of inventive ways. These arrangements for two pianos by Thomas Adès capture the strange magic of the originals, where fragmented musical ideas are played off against each other in a wild, almost jazz-like way. The works are accompanied by film-visualisations by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements.

Peter Hill’s recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II wowed critics across the board in January 2012, prompting The Guardian to write: ‘With luck this is the first in a series of Bach recordings from Hill, and let’s hope Book I of the “48” follows soon.’

His performances of Bach’s first volume of masterpieces exhibit all the qualities that were identified by reviewers of Hill’s previous traversal - ‘warmth, clarity and insight’ (Classical Music Magazine,
Editor’s Choice), ‘vital communication’ (HiFi Critic),‘impeccable’ (BBC Radio 3 CD Review, Disc of the Week), ‘shimmering’ (BBC Music Magazine), ‘liquescent’ (International Record Review).

One of the leading British pianists of his generation, Peter Hill is known for his performances and recordings of twentieth-century and contemporary music as well as the classical repertoire. His complete cycles of Messiaen and of Berg, Schoenberg and Webern have received superlative acclaim. The Messiaen was described as ‘one of the most impressive solo recording projects of recent years’ (New York Times), and won Messiaen’s endorsement: ‘Beautiful technique, a true poet: I am a passionate admirer of Peter Hill’s playing’. Both sets feature in the book 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die.

Music of extraordinary range and power composed at the dawn of the Space Age, Ronald Stevenson’s Passacaglia on DSCH was long claimed as the biggest single stretch of music ever written for piano. It is a veritable world tour of styles as well as a single-minded exploration of its generating motif, and rising star James Willshire -- who received five-star acclaim in 2011 for his Delphian debut disc of music by Rory Boyle - has the technique and vaulting ambition to match both the work's grandeur and its immense wealth of detail.

Willshire gave the 1955 Variations on a Theme of Pizzetti its belated concert premiere just this year, and now commits it to disc as one of a number of premiere recordings. The more recent, and equally substantial Fugue, Variations and Epilogue on a Theme by Arnold Bax crystallises Stevenson’s lifelong devotion to a Celtic aesthetic as well as foregrounding his innovative approach to variation technique. A clutch of shorter works completes the picture, bringing to light some of Stevenson’s less often remarked qualities - charm, exuberance, wit and grace.

In 2000, at the age of fifteen, James was awarded an Educational Scholarship in the London International Piano Competition, the youngest British pianist to be thus recognised. He has performed at festivals throughout the UK and abroad, including the Lichfield, Cheltenham, and Winchester Festivals and many more.

In 2002 Simon Smith made his recording debut on Delphian in a disc of James MacMillan’s complete piano music, paired with Stuart MacRae’s Piano Sonata. Recordings of music by Hafliði Hallgrímsson and Thomas Wilson have followed. In this new, substantial outing Smith turns from music-making in Scotland to another of his lifelong loves, the music of Alfred Schnittke.

This two-disc set comprises Schnittke’s entire published output for solo piano (including one piece for piano duet and another for six hands at one keyboard). The Russian composer’s music often makes gargantuan demands of the player. Smith’s technical prowess, astonishing dynamic palette and heartfelt musicality make him its ideal exponent.

A recognised authority in 20th century and contemporary music, Peter Hill turns for the first time on disc to another of his lifelong preoccupations - the music of JS Bach. On this new recording, Hill brings his customary scholarly acumen and crystalline musical intelligence to bear on Book two of the ‘48’ - music of ‘unsurpassed inventiveness’.

David Wilde plays Schumann

David Wilde plays Schumann
ID: DCD34050

Instrumental
Subcollection: Piano

The original first-movement manuscript of Schumann's Fantasie in C has a number of differences from the editions commonly used today - significant tempo and textual changes which David Wilde has reinstated in a revelatory reading of this tumultuous love-poem to the young Clara. In contrast, Kinderszenen, a touching and vernal evocation of childhood, is given a performance of artless innocence that chimes with Wilde's conviction that ‘it shouldn't sound mature'. Carnaval's colourful cast of characters is viscerally and imaginatively brought to life, culminating in Wilde's fearsome ‘March against the Philistines'.

A veteran of the Romantic piano tradition, David Wilde brings six decades of intense experience to this recital. His playing harks back to a time when audiences expected much more from the performer. This is Schumann with personality - listeners searching for a ‘safe' experience will be disappointed.

Jesus Torres (born in Saragossa, 1965) is one of the key figures in a very talented generation of Spanish composers who have made a significant contribution to the further development of music in Europe. While they share neither a style nor an ideational background, they do share their point of departure: artistically speaking, they are all "grandchildren" of the great innovators of the post-war period; they came to music after the avant-garde had already gained a permanent, emphatic foothold at the academies - and begun their subsequent march into aesthetic isolation. In order to break free from this, Torres and his colleagues set off on highly individual and divergent musical paths that, viewed as a whole, still set a remarkable example.
