Historical Recordings / Recorded in 1958 - 1961
Samuil Feinberg (1890-1962) was one of the greatest Russian pianists of the 20th century - a unique artist who combined the depth of a philosopher, the creativity of a composer, and the mastery of a virtuoso performer.
For Feinberg, the music of J.S. Bach was a lifelong companion. His concert debut in 1914 already included both volumes of ”The Well-Tempered Clavier”, and throughout his career he returned to this monumental cycle, revealing its inexhaustible artistic richness.
Feinberg championed a living, expressive interpretation of Bach, using the full power and color of the modern piano. With astonishing delicacy of nuance, he gave Bach’s music a vocal quality - animating each voice, phrase, and even each note with timbral and dynamic shading.
“How would the brilliant composer himself use the merits of the contemporary piano?
Perhaps he would not have approved of the trends in musical restoration.”
Samuil Feinberg
This edition from the Russian Piano School presents Feinberg at his artistic peak - a pianist whose interpretation of Bach stands among the most profound of the 20th century. His “Well-Tempered Clavier” is not only a performance, but a revelation, where the timeless genius of Bach meets the expressive possibilities of the modern piano.

Michael Nyman's score for Jane Campion's 1993 film The Piano is one of the most successful film soundtracks of all time. The film itself won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival in 1993 and went on to win several Oscars at the 1994 Academy Awards. The soundtrack of the film went on to become a multi-million seller. Perhaps surprisingly for music with such strong ties to its original source many of the pieces from The Piano were subsequently used in a variety of other settings in film, television and advertising making it some of the most performed/frequently heard orchestral music of the last twenty years.
Nyman/Greenaway revisited is a collection of the most popular music from the five soundtracks provided by the composer for Peter Greenaway's feature films from 1982 - 1991. Music from The Draughtsman's Contract, A Zed and Two Noughts, Drowning By Numbers, The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover, & Prospero's Books is included.
Working alongside director Laurence Dunmore, Nyman has composed the music for his latest film - The Libertine. The film is a version of the celebrated Stephen Jeffreys play and stars Johnny Depp, John Malkovich and Samantha Morton. It tells the story of the 17th century Earl of Rochester (Depp), his friendship with King of England Charles II (Malkovich) and his affair with actress Elizabeth Barry (Morton). |

Tatiana Nikolayeva - “was a pianist, composer, and teacher from the Soviet Union.
Nikolayeva won first prize in the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig,
which was founded to mark the bicentenary of Bach's death in 1750.“
“She will be remembered as a Bach performer who threw stylistic considerations to the wind and played music with an indefatigable musical intelligence and knowledge of the capabilities of her chosen instrument. This program included both volumes of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier (48 preludes and fugues).“

Sviatoslav Richter (1915 - 1997) was a Soviet and Russian pianist who is generally regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. He is known for the "depth of his interpretations, his virtuoso technique, and his vast repertoire." In the early 1920s Richter became interested in music and started studying piano. Unusually, he was largely self-taught.
Richter always loved, instantly and completely transformed, to take the listener into the world of quiet, detached sound contemplation, musical "nirvana", and concentrated thoughts. To that mysterious and hard-to-reach world, where everything purely material in performance - textured covers, fabric, substance, shell - already disappears, dissolves without a trace, giving way only to the strongest, thousand-volt spiritual radiation. Such is the world of Richter's many preludes and fugues from Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Collection: Piano Concerto Subcollection: PianoMelodiya presents a 4 CD set of recordings by pianist Grigory Sokolov. One of the best contemporary representatives of the St. Petersburg piano school, Sokolov is now well known in Russia and beyond. He tours around the globe delighting the audiences of the old and new worlds. Sokolov is a master of now rare “intellectual” pianism. However, unlike the great piano intellectual of the 20th century Glenn Gould, Sokolov prefers live concerts to studio work. “The biggest chasm is the one between a microphone and an individual,” the musician believes.
