Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Franz Liszt's twelve Transcendental Études performed by Lazar Berman. Once, being on top of his pianistic career, Liszt called his etudes transcendental (supernatural) - no one but him was able to play them. They seemed to be beyond the limits of human abilities. As time went by, pianistic technique took a great step forward, but only few pianists dared play the entire cycle of etudes during the subsequent 20th century. Lazar Berman, a greatest interpreter of Liszt's music among Soviet pianists, was one of them. Born in Leningrad to a musical family, he drew attention as early as he was four years old. He graduated with honors from the Central Music School and Moscow Conservatory where he studied with Alexander Goldenweiser, won the piano competition at the Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, and received prizes at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels and the Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Weimar. Overseas performances brought Berman sensational success. "A real titan", "keyboard wizard" said some of the reviews by European and American critics when they wrote about the young pianist's phenomenal technique and brilliant virtuosity. His numerous concerts in Moscow, Leningrad and other cities of the USSR were no less successful. Lazar Berman's performing art was imprinted on numerous recordings which haven't faded for connoisseurs of pianistic culture. |

Subcollection: PianoPeter Lichtenthal (1780-1853), born in Mozart’s lifetime, became a passionate advocate of his music. Lichtenthal was a doctor by profession, but also a composer and musicologist who wrote an important early biography of Mozart in 1816. Lichtenthal transcribed several Mozart compositions for string quartet, string quintet, and other ensembles. His transcription of the Requiem Mass for string quartet was designed to preserve Mozart’s great melodies in a domestic setting, before the existence of sound recordings. Likewise the beloved Piano Concerto No. 20, transformed here into a version that could be played in many a bourgeois or upper middle class drawing room in the early nineteenth century. The Aglàia Quartet is one form of the larger Ensemble Aglàia, founded in Milan in 1992 and named after one of the three Graces from Greek mythology. They specialize in Baroque and pre-classical music performed on original instruments. They are joined here by Laura Alvini, one of Italy’s best-known keyboard artists for early music, both on harpsichord and fortepiano. |

Subcollection: PianoThe album Acts of Beauty / Exit no Exit couples two world premiere recordings.
Acts of Beauty is a song cycle based on miscellaneous texts on beauty from a 1556 text of Vincenzo Cartari, which looks at the measurements of beauty by comparing buttocks to beauty in the urban environment as viewed by Kurt Scwitters and Dzuga Vertov to Martial's Epigrams on another kind of sexual measurement: the weighing of penis. It presents an entirely different Nyman approach to vocal writing than is found in Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi.
Exit no Exit began life as Beckham Crosses, Nyman Scores, a 'homage' to the England football team as part of an extended documentary broadcast on BBC Radio 3 to celebrate the end of the World Cup finals in Japan / Korea in 2002. Nyman decided to take extracts from John Motson's commentary to the England v Argentina match and sample, loop and 'instrumentalise' them in the manner of Steve Reich's Different Trains: translating the loops repeating rhythmic and melodic patterns played without variation.
Rewritten for the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company in 2006, John Motson's voice is now replaced with a bass clarinet which not only imitates the commentator's highly idiosyncratic speech patterns, but also takes off from these with a concertante part of some virtuosity. A completely new, multi-section closing 10 minutes sequence was written specially for Exit no Exit, premiered on 7 February 2006 at Brighton's Gardner Arts Centre.

Michael Nyman's score for Jane Campion's 1993 film The Piano is one of the most successful film soundtracks of all time. The film itself won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival in 1993 and went on to win several Oscars at the 1994 Academy Awards. Holly Hunter's role as Ada the film's central role was that of an elective mute who chose to communicate via her playing. If having the music feature so prominently in a film was unusual, for the music to additionally convey the dialogue of the main character is unique. The soundtrack of the film went on to become a multi million seller. Perhaps surprisingly for music with such strong ties to its original source many of the pieces from The Piano were subsequently used in a variety of other settings in film, television and advertising making it some of the most performed/frequently heard orchestral music of the last twenty years.
The concert suite for The Piano as performed by The Michael Nyman Band also became a staple of the band's concert repertoire and has been performed all over the world with the composer taking the roles of pianist and conductor. It is this expanded form of the soundtrack that Nyman chose to record as his own definitive edition in Abbey Road studios in April 2005. The piano pieces again form a dialogue, though here the dialogue is purely musical between pianist and orchestra rather having the piano pieces act as speech substitute as they did in the film. The resulting album is a wonderful example of film music transformed to a distinctive stand alone concert work. |

Subcollection: PianoFirma Melodiya presents recordings of the suites for two pianos from Sergei Prokofiev's ballets. This album is the first original project of Melodiya for the last twenty years that introduces a new generation of Russian music performers (by virtue of circumstances, Firma Melodiya has been re-releasing the recordings made in the former USSR). The piano duet of Lyudmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle was formed in 2011. They have won acclaim of the public and some leading musical periodicals for their concerts and recordings. Lyudmila Berlinskaya is a representative of a renowned musical dynasty, an Honoured Artist of Russia and grand prix winner of prestigious international competitions. Arthur Ancelle was born in Paris to an artistic family and has given concerts in France and overseas since 13. He is a well-known interpreter of 20th century music and an author of piano arrangements of symphonic works by various composers. This album features his piano transcriptions of two fragments from Romeo and Juliet. The transcriptions for two piano fragments from the ballet Cinderella featured on the album were made by the outstanding contemporary pianist Mikhail Pletnyov. Prokofiev's suites were recorded by Berlinskaya and Ancelle in 2013. |
