World Music

In this inspired live concert recording, Terry Riley, one of the Master - Composers of our century, plays a kaleidoscopic improvisational journey of solo piano music from his Piano Cycle The Harp of New Albion and from Salome Dances for Peace, originally composed for String Quartet, which is recorded here for the first time in its piano version.

The listener will find new in this recording the magic and extraordinary beauty which breathlessly held the attention of the audience that evening.
In Riley's opinion, this is one of his best piano albums.

Some may believe the music of 18th Century Iberian composers to be less interesting than the music from Germany, France and Italy of this period. However, these two volumes of keyboard music illustrate the originality of Spanish and Portuguese composers Angles, Albéniz, Cantallos, Carvalho, Ferrer, Freixanet, Jacinto, Seixas and Soler. At the beginning of the 18th Century, Louis XI was King of Spain. He felt little enthusiasm for Spanish national art and preferred foreign artists. Consequently, Italian singers and composers gradually influenced the aristocratic tastes and the court life in Spain. It was a similar situation in Portugal. When King Johan V (1707-1750) became ruler of Portugal, he set about cultivating the arts in the city of Lisbon. Portuguese musicians had the opportunity to take apprenticeships in Italy while Italian musicians, such as Domenico Scarlatti were welcomed into Lisbon to perform. The authoritative musical figures during this time were! men of the church. Father Antonio Soler was a friar, organist and composer as well as an important theoretician who dominated the musical scene in Spain. The first pianofortes were being manufactured and Soler was fortunate to have a piano at the monastery. Although he wrote for the organ, the compositional quality of his keyboard works show that he had the piano in mind. His Portuguese counterpart was José António Carlos de Seixas. Seixas became Portugal?s finest keyboard player of this period who bridged the gap between Baroque and Classical eras. Both composers did not simply duplicate Italian idioms, but developed and expanded the style while recalling their Spanish and Portuguese roots. They blended vocal-like melodies into quasi-contrapuntal lines and simple block harmonies. This formed a model on which classical composers such as Haydn and Mozart were to base their compositions.

For the genesis of Java Suite we have to go back to 1920. Godowsky was 50, at the height of his fame as a pianiast and a composer, and about to enter the most hectic decade of his life. He had recently made New York his base, he was married with four children and his hands were insured for one million dollars. The Nerw York Times has dubbed him 'a pianist for pianists' as Shelly is 'a poet for poets'. After a two year tour to exotic places such as Mexico, Japan, Hong Hong, Shanghai, Singapore and Java he started composing the first of his Phonoramas and naming them Java Suite.

Nazareth was a Brazilian composer who explored the fusion of Afro-Brazilian musical elements and European classical traditions. His concerts were mainly at theatres, hotels, and cinemas; especially at the famous Cinema Odeon in Rio de Janeiro, where his performances would take place at the waiting room of the cinema and where he became so popular, that people used to go to the Odeon to hear Nazareth, instead of watching the films. “After I heard the music of Nazareth, I finally understood the meaning of Brazilian soul.” remarked Darius Milhaud to Villa-Lobos in his arrival in Rio de Janeiro in 1916.

Originally released posthumously on Zopf Records in 1998, this newly re-mastered and re-packaged edition of Piano Music is re-released in April 2011 to coincide with the re-releases of both Concert Program and Union Cafe on the new Penguin Cafe Label. 'Most of the pieces on this album are previously unreleased material found on Simon's tapes after his death in December 1997. Exceptions are 'Piano Music', which appeared on the Preludes Airs and Yodels compilation, and 'Kora Kora' and 'Silver Star', which were on the Union Cafe album. 'Lullaby' is a new peice completed by Simon but recorded after his death by friends and members of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The other fourteen pieces were played and recorded by Simon at various times and places (some unknown). 'Shelter' and 'Cajun Piano' are sketches of pieces Simon planned to record fir his next album, which would have also incuded 'Lullaby'. Less specifically, he often imagined a future collection of piano music - not to be confused, of course, with this retrospective one.'
