For the genesis of Java Suite we have to go back to 1920. Godowsky was 50, at the height of his fame as a pianiast and a composer, and about to enter the most hectic decade of his life. He had recently made New York his base, he was married with four children and his hands were insured for one million dollars. The Nerw York Times has dubbed him 'a pianist for pianists' as Shelly is 'a poet for poets'. After a two year tour to exotic places such as Mexico, Japan, Hong Hong, Shanghai, Singapore and Java he started composing the first of his Phonoramas and naming them Java Suite.

The music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was highly esteemed by his contemporaries. Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven all held him in high esteem and Mozart would even write to his father "He is the father and we are his children…" while Brahms showed his devotion by arranging and publishing two of C.P.E. Bach's violin sonatas.
Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with having "created" the first concertos for a keyboard instrument and orchestra. His son Carl Philipp Emanuel would later develop and enrich the form even further composing at least 53 keyboard concertos of his own. The richness and variety of Bach's invention can be heard on the remarkable works that Michael Rische recorded here.
Michael Rische has been hailed as an advocate of forgotten masterworks, including the piano concertos of Erwin Schulhoff, and George Antheil. Rische now tackles the works of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach, a composer whose works embody the same passion, and Sturm und Drang, as Schulhoff and the same bold spirit of exploration and experimentation that can be found in the music of Antheil.
With Michael Rische at the keyboard, C.P.E. Bach's music is in good hands!

Gerhard Oppitz - Japanese Piano Works

The program covers 70 years of Japanese classical music, beginning with a Piano Sonata by the German-trained Saburo Moroi. Moroi was Japan's first great symphonist and his musical language shows the influence of Hindemith. "Second Generation" composer Toru Takemitsu is arguably Japan's most famous composer. Takemitsu composed music in nearly every style, from experimental electronic pieces to film scores and even lounge jazz songs. His best works are characterized by a successful blending of Japanese aesthetics with western compositional techniques. The music of the Post War generation is represented by works from three of Japan's most popular living composers. Shin-Ichiro Ikebe is best know for his many soundtracks and film scores for the director Akira Kurosawa and the popular Miyazaki anime movies, while composer Akira Nishimura has consciously sought to create a distinctive Pan-Asian musical language, bringing together aspects of the aesthetic, spiritual and philosophic traditions from many different cultures. Keiko Fujiie, the youngest composer represented in this recital is no doubt familiar to guitarists around the world. She has composed many popular works for performance by her husband, the phenomenal guitar virtuoso Kazuhito Yamashita. This is an extraordinary recital, beautifully performed by Oppitz and an invaluable documentation of a still-neglected area of the 20th century piano repertoire.

FRANZ LISZT - Works for Violin and Piano Vol.2

Friedemann Eichhorn is a German violinist with the unique gift of projecting his talents into different musical idioms. That versatility was first demonstrated in the release of two successful discs of Tango arrangements, and now, his mastery of the late Romantic style is showcased once again in the concluding volume of Liszt's complete works for Violin and Piano. While generally not known as a composer of chamber music, Liszt wrote music for violin and piano throughout his career. While several pieces are arrangements of songs or works originally composed for piano solo, many are original compositions and explore the same stylistic explorations that can be found in Liszt's more famous compositions - including the use of folk materials, harmonic and melodic experimentations and cyclical forms.
The Yorkshire Post (UK) praised Eichorn's first volume of Liszt (HÄN CD 98.588), writing:
"Discovering virtuoso masterpieces is rare, even more so when they come from a very famous composer. The nine pieces represent about half of Liszt's output for violin and piano, ranging from the gypsy inspired 'Die drei Zigeuner', full of technical fireworks, to the imposing Grand Duo concertante. They are played with phenomenally clean articulation by Friedmann Eichhorn, his mix of technical fireworks with honey and cream tone fills the works with understanding. Wonderfully alive accompaniments from Rolf-Dieter Arens."

Nazareth was a Brazilian composer who explored the fusion of Afro-Brazilian musical elements and European classical traditions. His concerts were mainly at theatres, hotels, and cinemas; especially at the famous Cinema Odeon in Rio de Janeiro, where his performances would take place at the waiting room of the cinema and where he became so popular, that people used to go to the Odeon to hear Nazareth, instead of watching the films. “After I heard the music of Nazareth, I finally understood the meaning of Brazilian soul.” remarked Darius Milhaud to Villa-Lobos in his arrival in Rio de Janeiro in 1916.

Originally released posthumously on Zopf Records in 1998, this newly re-mastered and re-packaged edition of Piano Music is re-released in April 2011 to coincide with the re-releases of both Concert Program and Union Cafe on the new Penguin Cafe Label. 'Most of the pieces on this album are previously unreleased material found on Simon's tapes after his death in December 1997. Exceptions are 'Piano Music', which appeared on the Preludes Airs and Yodels compilation, and 'Kora Kora' and 'Silver Star', which were on the Union Cafe album. 'Lullaby' is a new peice completed by Simon but recorded after his death by friends and members of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The other fourteen pieces were played and recorded by Simon at various times and places (some unknown). 'Shelter' and 'Cajun Piano' are sketches of pieces Simon planned to record fir his next album, which would have also incuded 'Lullaby'. Less specifically, he often imagined a future collection of piano music - not to be confused, of course, with this retrospective one.'
