Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: PianoThe first volume (Claves CD 50-2707) was a huge success, receiving, among other accolades, a Choc award from Monde de la Musique. Pianist Joanna Brzezinska is back with a new collection of solo pieces by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. In his preface, writer Etienne Barilier says it all in a few words. “Simple, sweetly naïve melodies and energetic, unrelenting rhythms carried by a boundless, surging vitality. Such is Brazil - sentimental and powerful, ingenuous and wild; ineffably gentle and yet infinitely forceful. Heitor Villa-Lobos succeeded in all his works, and particularly in those gathered here, in bringing these extremes together: languor and vigour, the caressing hand and the closed fist, the sun and the moon.” As of the first bars, Joanna Brzezinska’s piano wafts you away… |

Subcollection: PianoSwiss benefactor and conductor who commissioned works from all three composers. Then, a certain instrumental colour with a Central European tinge in Bartók and Veress, but also in Dutilleux, French composer who uses - probably as a form of tribute - one of the most emblematic of Hungarian instruments, the cimbalom.
Three great 20th century classics interpreted by Heinz Holliger, composer, conductor, oboist and pianist ; a friend of Paul Sacher’s, he was also Sándor Veress’ pupil in his composition class in Bern.Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon - who won the Géza Anda prize in Zurich - plays Veress’ Concerto with finesse and conviction, defending the composer with brio, as he did in his amazing Hommage à Paul Klee for two pianos, with András Schiff and Heinz Holliger for Teldec).
Finally, to complete the trio, one of the best Swiss chamber orchestras of today, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, whose fundamental repertoire includes the three works presented on this CD. |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: PianoFirma Melodiya presents a solo album of Ekaterina Mechetina, a wonderful Russian pianist of the new generation.
A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory where she studied under associate professor Vladimir Ovchinnikov and professor Sergey Dorensky, and a laureate of the Youth Prize “Triumph” and seven prestigious international competitions, Ekaterina Mechetina began to conquer the musical Olympus at a very early age.
The young pianist’s first concert took place when she was ten. Her pianistic gift was acknowledged by some of the great masters of 20th century music art. So, Rodion Shchedrin entrusted her with the world premiere of his sixth piano concert after he heard her for the first time; Mstislav Rosropovich invited her to perform with the orchestra he conducted. Ekaterina Mechetina has won the audiences of some of the world’s best venues. Today, the pianist plays over sixty concerts annually performing at some of the largest concert hall. Her repertoire includes about fifty piano concertos and dozens of solo programmes. She has worked with outstanding soloists, conductors, symphony and choir collectives of Russia and other countries. The pianist’s perfect mastery, bright creative individuality and amazing artistic charisma have won the hearts of listeners around the world. On this album, Ekaterina Mechetina appears as an inspired interpreter of Russian classical piano music. Apart from one of then greatest cycles of Russian music of the 19th century which is Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, it also includes eight of the études-tableaux from Rachmaninoff’s Op. 33 and two virtuosic pieces by Tchaikovsky - Dumka and Theme with Variations.

Rachmaninov:
Études-Tableaux, Op. 33 (extracts)
Tchaikovsky:

Subcollection: OrchestreThis compact disc features the premiere recordings of the most important works for orchestra by Max d’Ollone: «Le Ménétrier» (the village fiddler), Lamento and the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra Like his teacher Jules Massenet, d’Ollone was particularly fascinated by the human voice, and for this reason he is primarily remembered as a composer of operas, sacred and secular cantatas and countless songs.
Although Max d’Ollone wrote relatively little orchestral music and although this repertoire was written in a limited period of time (almost exclusively before 1914), his symphonic music is characterized by a very high artistic and compositional quality. His orchestral music is richly lyrical, emotionally expressive and technically impeccable.
The three-movement structure of «Le Ménétrier» with a solo violin part is very reminiscent of a concerto, a purely instrumental form, but d’Ollone described it as a «symphonic poem in three parts with a solo violin». Lamento is a meticulously orchestrated work. One is carried away by the beauty of its melodic lines and their emotional force. The delicate harmonies, at times unexpected and yet always elegant and smooth, contribute to the sense of movement toward a profound serenity. The Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra is forceful and majestic, at times reminiscent of Saint-Saëns. The monumental, grandiloquent finale masterfully accentuates the emotional power of this composition. This recording is rounded off by a chamber music work, the Andante and Scherzo for Three Cellos a short composition that offers clear demonstration of the evolution of the composer’s musical language.

Subcollection: QuartetThe Japanese pianist Fumiko Shiraga has made a specialty in recent years of performing famous concertos with a small group of instrumentalists. She calls this project “concertos in disguise.” “It was common in the 19th century to present concert performances of large-scale works in a scaled-down version,” she explains. “There were many fewer orchestras then on the musical scene than there are today, and so one had recourse to the musicians that were available and adapted the music according to the instrumentarium.” Beyond such practical considerations, these arrangements can be appreciated on a purely artistic level. To Fumiko Shiraga’s mind, small formations offer many advantages. “When one plays with an orchestra, the result depends in large part on the conductor, on his or her ideas and ability to enter into the world of the soloist. With a small ensemble it is quite different - one is flexible, reactive. One reaches the limits of fortissimo much more quickly, and thus the piano has much wider expressive possibilities, particularly in the intimist register.” For her first recording for Claves, she has chosen Felix Mendelssohn’s concertos Opus 25 and Opus 40, arranged by Cord Garben for piano and string quintet. Plus: six Romances without Words delicately arranged for piano, violin, and cello. Chamber music on symphonic or soloist notes - a rediscovery! |
