Subkolektion: Cello The release features three of the most outstanding opuses of Georgi Tutev, a representative of Bulgaria 's music avant-garde. The composer wrote a relatively small number of opuses, mainly in the chamber-instrumental and symphonic genres. The years of work on almost every composition of his speak of mature consideration and precision, of logical coherence. In Tutev's music one finds artistic achievements worthy of respect, rather than mere experiments. The first piece on this CD, Metamorphoses for 13 Stringed Instruments belongs to the early period of his work, while Longing for the Lost Harmony presents the composer both as a musician and as a philosopher. Here he expressed in sounds his thoughts and feelings regarding music technique - in the perspective of the time that has passed from 18th c. classicism to the last decades of the 20th century, when the harmonic supports and rules that were once set by composers like Haydn and Mozart were finally rejected. Tutev's aim was to make a dialogue with that long-passed time and its aesthetics. His "longings" lead the listener to the spiritual world of the composer, who longs for the lost harmony between Man and Nature, between mankind itself. The composition of Calvinomuosaik is very original. This is one of the last pieces of Georgi Tutev. It was written on commission of the German Radio, Cologne and the composer's inspiration for writing it came from the novel "The Invisible Cities" by the Italian writer Italo Calvino.

Kolektion: Orchestral WorksSubkolektion: Orchester The compositions presented in this programme were created during the 90ies of the last century and illustrate the composer's sensitivity and confession. His messages to the public are emotional, especially as far as Fahrenheit 451 Symphonic Suite from the Ballet is concerned. The other work is SentiMetal Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, one of the composer's most outspokenly lyrical works. A little sentiment, a little metal, this is an explanation, characteristic of the author's paradoxical thinking and sense of humour. This work, commissioned by the Dutch Radio NOS expresses the author's evolution in style, his sound and timbre diversity, virtuosity, dynamics, and fantasy.

Subkolektion: Viola Concerto per viola ed orchestra, NDR Orchestra, Aldo Ceccato, conductor
There are two centuries that separate the composers included in this release - Karl Philipp Stamitz (1745-1801) and Krzystof Penderecki (1933). Living in two different epochs, their works reflect not only the development of music, but also the history of the viola concerto. Stamitz' Konzert D Dur for Viola and Orchestra was composed when the genre was still in its early stage, the interest in the instrument itself was quite lively and its technical means and expressive resources provoked the curiosity of the composers. When Penderecki wrote Concerto per viola ed orchestra, the viola had long since established itself in the composers' practice. The idea of combining the two composers is very interesting and requires incredible artistic mastership.
The two concertos have been recorded by the talented Bulgarian viola player Dimitar Penkov. Having graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, he is laureate of a number of prestigious international competitions. He specialized with Prof. Yfrah Neaman in London and has enjoyed a successful performing career working with conductors like Pierre Bartholomee, Michael Tabachnik, Aldo Ceccato, Gilbert Varga, Vassil Kazandjiev, Konstantin Iliev, Alexander Vladigerov and others. Accepting the invitation of Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Bartholomee, he made a premire performance of Penderecki's viola concerto in France, which was recorded live by Radio Paris (1985). Since 1983 he has been living in Hanover, Germany. |

Kolektion: Orchestral WorksSubkolektion: Orchester The second CD of the series presenting the contemporary Bulgarian composers, project of the Soros Center for the Arts, includes music by five representatives of three generations of tonal masters. Their compositions demonstrate a rich palette of ideas and aesthetic preferences, so characteristic of the Bulgarian school from the last three decades of the 20th century. Alexander Tanev, known for his excellent choral works and cantatas, often combines in his symphonic works academic principles of construction with the most modern resources of our century, while the younger Alexander Kandov looks for a new expressiveness and has directed himself to original themes in his symphonic works. Simeon Pironkoff's Night Music is among the author's most representative and bright opuses, appealing to the listener with the refined sound and elegant melodic line. The same can be said about the Fantasia by Plamen Djouroff, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel are representative of Krassimir Kyurkchiiski's art of composing. The author demonstrates his mastery of handling the Baroque forms, introducing in them the outlook and interpretation of a contemporary musician. |

Kolektion: Orchestral WorksSubkolektion: Orchester The third CD begins with Ponchielli and Dance of the Hours from the popular opera "La Gioconda" (1876). Then follow two overtures by the Austrian composer Franz von Suppe - "Beautiful Galathea" and "Leicht Kavallerie", Brahms' Hungarian Dances Nos 1, 5 and 6 (created during the period 1869-80). After that come the founder of the Czech national composers school Smetana and his symphonic poem The Moldau, and Weber - the founder of the German romantic and legendary-knights opera, with his famous Invitation to the Dance. The programme ends with one of the greatest masters of polyphonic music and founder of the classical type of oratorio - Haendel, who has written 32 oratorios, one of which is Judas Maccabaeus, an excerpt of which is included in this release. The CD thus features representatives of the pre-classical, classical and romantic periods, and some European national composers' schools. |
