The adventure started over ten years ago. With one recording a year, we are now, in 2009, up to the 12th volume of the Basque music collection, begun by Marguerite Dütschler-Huber, the founder of Claves Records, which the new management is very keen to pursue. This last opus is dedicated to the composer, pianist and teacher Beltrán Pagola (1878-1950), who was, notably, professor at the San Sebastián Conservatory of two other musicians whom this collection has already honoured: José María Usandizaga (CD 50-9814) and Francisco Escudero (CD 50-2110/11). Pagola left an indelible mark on the Basque institution, where he spent almost half a century. He gave it a Symphony Orchestra and wrote a Traité pratique d’harmonie (Practical Harmony Treatise), which is still a reference today. In this album, the National Basque Orchestra, conducted by Rubén Gimeno, proposes a range of works spanning about thirty years of creative activity. From the 1918 Allegro Appassionato orchestrated by Escudero (who took over his composition class in 1848) to the surprising 1947 iDonosti!, caprice humoristique, we discover music that is both true to its period and irresistibly attached to the Basque tradition.

A. Glazunov - The Seasons, Ballet, Op. 67 & Chopiniana

Glazunov’s ballet music continued the tradition of Tchaikovsky’s “symphonic ballets”. The Seasons was ordered by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the director of the Imperial Theatres, and completed in 1900 to be choreographed by Marius Petipa at the St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Theatre. Conceived as an allegory of Nature with its eternal cycle of youth, growing and ageing, the ballet did not see a proper stage production when the composer was around, but its music enjoyed popularity very quickly.

The suite Chopiniana, an orchestration of diverse pieces by Chopin, was composed in 1892. Sharing the love of many Russian composers for Chopin’s music, Glazunov displayed a magnificent sense of style and orchestral skills. The piano pieces did not become any heavier but got a new sound in a new facet. The Ballet master Michel Fokine made use of the suite fifteen years later when he created his famous ballet performance. Glazunov’s works were recorded by the celebrated Soviet symphony orchestras led by the prominent conductors of the 20th century Boris Khaikin and Evgeny Svetlanov.

This CD features recordings by the outstanding Russian conductor Rozhdestvensky, who gave much attention to musical novelties in his performances. None could be more famous than Symphonie Fantastique.

The romantic school that was characteristic of the European spiritual environment of the beginning of the 19th century originally appeared in the circle of the German writers and philosophers: Wackenroder, Ludwig Tieck, Novalis, brothers Schlegeli. Being picked up in different European countries it became simultaneously apparent in various genres of art but the most conspicuous - in music. The development of romanticism in music was formed in its peculiar way in every particular country corresponding national and historical conditions. However, they were united by the common tendency to reflect individual inner life of human emotions that were connected with the social position of a person. The tragedy was that the society did not understand and rejected personal credo. An artist’s personal drama who was seeking consolation in the realm of day dreaming and fantasy was put in the forefront in the creative work of the romantic composers. Miniature became the most essential form in the works of the most outstanding representatives of romanticism. Vocal art was represented by the romances and song cycles of Schumann and Schubert. There appeared many piano pieces of different genres in the heritage of Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn. The operatic art that was crowned by the theatre productions of Bellini, Verdi and Wagner reached its peak.

Firma Melodiya presents an album dedicated to the anniversaries of two great figures of Russian culture of the 20th century - Sergei Yesenin (1895-1925) and Georgy Sviridov (1915-1998).
“Once … I met a poet I knew, and he spent a long time reading Yesenin for me. That’s when Yesenin’s verses imprinted themselves on my soul. When I got back home, I could not fall
asleep… The music came suddenly. … That was how I wrote my first song to Yesenin’s text which later became a core song in my Poem to the Memory of Sergei Yesenin. The rest of the songs were composed during two weeks, all at once”. The premiere of the Poem to the Memory of Sergei Yesenin took place in 1956, in Moscow and was a new milestone in the composer’s career properly unveiling his original style and subtle feeling for poetry to the public. On the other hand, Sviridov’s Poem where the composer strived to render the poet’s spiritual side and passionate “love for the native land” became an actual rehabilitation of Yesenin’s poetry which had been covertly prohibited for a long time. Soon after completion of the vocal and symphonic Poem,
the composer came up with the cycle My Father Is a Peasant for tenor, baritone and piano where Yesenin’s images of Russian nature and scenes of country life were expressed by means
of chamber vocal lyric music.
Wooden Russia, a small cantata for tenor, men’s choir and orchestra was composed in 1964 and had an epigraph taken from Yesenin’s verses “Russia, my wooden Russia!”. The poet’s four
poems recreate an image of old patriarchal Russia while the last lines of the final movement herald its tragic demise.
Georgy Sviridov’s cantatas set to the poetry of Sergei Yesenin are performed by the Republican Academic Choir led by Alexander Yurlov and such luminaries of domestic conducting art as Yuri Temirkanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The chamber cycle is sung by Alexei Maslennikov, an outstanding interpreter of Sviridov’s music who is accompanied by the author.

In the first half of the 19th century, Russian composers began to show an interest for the music of the Orient. Then, at the very beginning of the century, the Caucasus became open for visits. Not only composers, but also poets and painters were impressed with its exoticism, and the notion "Orient" included not just the Arab East, but the Caucasus as well. In terms of style, its nature, traditions, music and dances were literally overwhelming. The Caucasus inspired many of the works of the Russian culture of the 19th century. The territorial proximity of the Caucasus to Russia, close associations with the culture and arts of the Caucasus, including the works by Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, and, mainly, visits of Russian composers such as Mikhail Glinka and Mily Balakirev to the Caucasus - all that were reasons why orientality found its fullest development and expression in the Russian music as compared to the other European music cultures.
